So New Zealand Wants To Change Its Flag....

A lot of the ones that retain the blue and red of the union jack in colour but not design tend to have a distinctly South East Asian look about them, to me. See Thailand and Laos for particularly overt examples.......

Fourth row, second column looks South Pacific to me, and seems suitable on all fronts. Fifth row, first column I'd maybe like with different colours. The only red, white, and blue one that works for me is forth row, fifth column. The red is subdued enough, and not SE Asian looking - it's understated, ties in with the old flag and a natural landmark, and doesn't look like the Aussie flag.

My personal favourite would have to be 2nd from the top, far left

...whereas now they think it's Australia which is close enough.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with this part of your statement. Australia already tries to take everything from us. Pavlova, they took the Tri Nation Rugby Championship, they keep trying to get the Bledisloe from us. They can't take our country and flag from us as well. AUSTRALIA≠NEW ZEALAND People need to understand this and I feel that changing the flage may be a good start to it:)

I agree, either the 2nd one top left or the 3rd one down left or the 5th one 3rd row (the fern with either Black, Blue, White) are the best. They look the most serious and professional and not to stylistic IMO. Plus everyone associates the Fern with NZ more than anything.

I'm surprised a choice with a Kiwi on it never made the final 40.

I feel there needs to be more flags in the world which predominately use black. It looks great when designed well but unfortunately black flags have some historical negative connotations.

Hooray not being called Australian any more I guess.

Would be nice for this 26 million to go to somewhere where it's actually needed, though.

There are a couple of us left scattered about here :) Drifting has really taken off.

I don't think we need a new flag because we are barely recognised globally as it is!

And hardly any of us even care about the flag. Cut our taxes or hideous petrol prices instead.

Not like Kiwis to get that worked up about something.

I'd like a black flag with the feathers on it. Always loved that as a design. Think it would make a great flag.

It also looks exactly the same as the Qualmark logo. To paraphrase a comment on /r/newzealand, we need a symbol for a sovereign nation, not a trademark logo.

It's like choosing the least worst tasting of spoiled milk with these 4 to be brutally honest. There was the opportunity to choose something really special and honestly they've fluffed it up. I really liked the Te Ao Marama flag from the article @Daniel Of these the least worst of the spoiled milk would be one of the top 2. Bottom left as you said is Qualmarks logo and bottom right just looks strange without the Union Jack

Just in case anyone was wondering - the 4 options above go to a referendum later in the year, with the winner to take on the current flag in a final showdown next year.

If it's important enough to go to referendum (which it clearly is) then will there also be an option to keep the original or to reject all suggestions and start afresh?

After the favourite alternate is decided, another referendum held to decide to adopt it or keep the current one.

The first one - red, white and blue, fern and Southern Cross - has always been the best one.

Any with the swirl on it just looks like a tsunami. Probably not something a country on the Ring of Fire wants to be lauding.

So this now going ahead,

There were over 10,000 public submissions, it has been whittled down to a selection of 40 by a government panel which will go to a vote later this year.

Here are the 40,

Second left on the top row - that's beautiful for a flag.

The RW&B version in the final four is also very nice.

The problem with the silver fern is that it's incredibly commercialised (it's pretty much on everything) in addition to being the logo for most of our national teams. Sure, it's a national logo but it's complicated to draw as a flag and people can easily get it confused with a feather (see above :P).

It'll be akin to putting a kangaroo on the Australian flag.

Who wants an easy to draw flag?

The Union Flag is very hard to draw correctly and it's just triangles and crosses. The USA flag has fifty white stars on it. The Welsh flag has an actual dragon.

Meanwhile, easy to draw flags include Italy, Germany or, if three colours is too much for you, Japan. They all lost WW2. Do you want to lose WW2?

Wallaby :D

I'm surprised the Red/Black version didn't get in but the Red/Blue one did. I have a feeling the 3rd one will win although it looks like a company logo as already mentioned.

Still surprised not one with a Kiwi was even considered.

Why has no one suggested a sheep yet?

You do not want some act of depravity to happen to it by some one.

New Zealand can save themselves the time by just switching to the australian flag and becoming the 2 new states of australia, they will be put in the same basket as Tasmania, the land masses that broke off.
