I live in snow most of my life, Solo, but enjoying your shots all the same. Maybe even because of that.

The aurora shots are great - very lifelike - the first time one experiences it IRL must possibly be a moment when one has to consider that wonders never cease - and life brings something new, just when you thought you knew it all.. . .

That was how I felt the first time the aurora 'zinged' across the sky for me.

Excellent images. The Aurora is something I'd love to see and defiantly will have to arrange.

That must have been a really great experience. I'm envy. ;)

Nice shots and thanks for sharing. 👍

Some really nice shots. Really liked the reindeer. The auroras are just cheating. :P
Thanks :) The auroras are still my favourite shots I have, even though I'm not technically happy with most of them
Fantastic shots. Love the dogs and reindeer.
Thanks :) The two sleigh rides were incredible, but bitterly cold. I'm surprised my camera didn't die in the extreme cold.

It really was, I'm a huge fan of winter travel and this was a great experience. You should make a trip to the arctic circle some time and take your camera!

At the weekend I went to see my colleges performance of Phantom of the Opera. It also made me realise I need a second body as having to swap lenses is really impractical and I missed some of the shots I wanted :grumpy:

More to come...

Photos from the gig I went along to last night. Frank Hamilton was the headliner with Charlotte Carpenter and Josh Kemp supporting. The venue was a tiny bar under a toy shop in Leicester but it was brilliant and made for a very intimate show as you can see from these pictures (all are 20mm [40mm equivalent]!), plus the music was great too. I'd highly recommend giving Frank Hamilton a listen.

This was my first time shooting a gig with my DSLR and I loved it. Certainly something I would like to do more of.

Holy smokes a small venue indeed if those are from a 40mm equiv. Damn, I've been wanting to pick up a 135mm F/2 for these kind of shots :P

Very nice work, the first one is particularly striking because of the background light.

Yeah, it made for a brilliantly intimate gig. I shoot on a micro 4/3 sensor with a 20mm prime so I think thats 40mm equiv. These were all at f/1.7 too. Thanks 👍

Nice exposures, too. Not easy, in those light conditions.
Did you shoot manual?
Thanks. It took a little trial and error to get the exposure right and a little processing on the .RAW file too.

But that was mainly to correct colours. And yes I do shoot in full manual, although I swapped between auto and manual focus a few times.

Not as happy with these as the photos from Frank Hamilton but thats due mainly to the fact I took my point and shoot rather than my DSLR to this gig due to venue restrictions and not having a photography pass. The results weren't too bad though.

You've defiantly got an eye for band and concert photography. I bet you'll be good at street.

I like nearly everything on the first page. More creativity than my whole flickr gallery.
Thanks, going back though there is a lot I'd change about some of those pictures (horizons and post processing) but I like how it shows a progression in my work.

Cheers Martin. I would like to do more street/human photography but I've not the guts to go out and do it in my city.

Leicester isn't a bad place to photograph. There tons of students who don't mind, and the market on a morning is pretty good too. (Used to live in Leicester on Oxford Street)

That selfie is quite interesting and original (to me, at least - it's the first time I see something like that).

The bird photo is also very beautiful.

Thank you :) The bird was just sitting in my neighbours hedge and happened to look up as I poked my camera out of the window, a lucky shot.

A bit of other news; I've ordered a 60D with the 50mm f/1.4 USM lens :D Can't wait to take delivery of that!

The 50mm f/1.4 is a handy lens to have for sure, and one of my favorites. It is just a bit tight on a crop sensor for what I find myself wanting to do most of the time, but I think that is more because I learned on a 50mm prime when I studied film.

It will be a bit of a change from the prime I'm used to using which is a 40mm equivalent in 35mm format as I believe the 50mm equates to an 80mm lens on the 60D's sensor. I find myself just using my prime though so having to alter my standing position won't be too much of an issue as I'm used to moving a fair amount to get the framing I want.

In time I will most likely purchase a 24-105 L to cover a bit more range but that is quite a way off.

The first creative selfie I've ever seen. Lol. Also, street photography would result in me getting locked up/getting my ass handed to me. I would be locked up for looking suspicious or something like that so it requires balls. Great shots.

As someone that almost always has a dSLR with him, I'm really curious why you think this. I've never gotten any trouble from law enforcement or security even, and this includes roaming around airports with this setup.

Or do you just act and look absurdly awkward and sketchy all the time? :odd:

@Solo - I'd consider the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD before the 24-105 L due to the aperture and cost. If money is less of an issue, the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 with IS is apparently sharper than the Mark I 24-70 f/2.8 L. Or there is the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS, which is as sharp as any L lens.

I think location has the most to do with this. Missouri is a really conservative state. If I were to go to California or anywhere in the West coast I wouldn't get many problems since people are more passive and happy. (Based off my experience in the West coast) I also don't carry that big of a camera. I usually have my Nikon D40 and a 28mm lens if I'm on the move, and I don't know how I could look sketchy anywhere. I got a bunch of compliments on my Nikon F2 in the city and I attempted to do street photography but I would either get "nope" or a mean look.

Now that you brought this up. I was at the airport here in Saint Louis waiting to get picked up from a trip to Texas, and a airport security guard or officer walked over and asked me what I was doing. I was only taking a picture of the skyline and he basically said 'You're not allowed to do that as it is a risk to our security'. He then called in to get confirmation from his manager, boss whatever on if I could take photos. After that he said 'I could do it' and he told me what angle I could take my photo at... If I can recall he said "As long as the photo doesn't show the entrance or the parking spots then it's okay" My mind went immediately to Google Earth and Street View. Couldn't I just look it up on there?

Sorry Solo for coming here with this wall of text. If you want me to delete it I will. 👍

Thanks for that, the cheaper lens looks good and the aperture is very good. Is it just the manual focus only though (not that that is an issue)?

Don't worry about it, it's interesting hearing about different experiences in street work.
