Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Tried my 18-month old Xperia Z in my dad's fish pond last month and killed it. Managed to get enough charge in it and use Xperia Bridge on my Mac to liberate the photos from it. That required opening the phone and drying it out.

Wow. That's about the same as watching a commercial for a car that claims to be ultra safe in the event of a crash, and then going out crashing in it on purpose... If you accidently dropped the Z3 in a tub with water, and it broke, then you should of course get a new one for free. But in this case, you basically set out to break it. I mean seriously, it's honestly common sense that you keep electronics away from water.

When the phone is advertised like this:

(photos from Sony website)

I don't think what I was doing was anything extreme.

Also, did it ever occur to you that the chemicals in pool water might not be good for the phone? Chlorine, for an example, isn't good for the phone, and the Sony website specifially says to wash the phone off with fresh water, after having been in contact with chlorine.

Sony states chlorine is not a problem. The phone is listed to work up to 1.5 meters in chlorinated or fresh water. The only thing that is forbidden is saltwater and harsh chemicals.

In short. Unless the tech your're using is specifically designed to be used in a submerged enviroment, use common sense, and keep it away from water!
Underwater photography/IP68 rating is one of the main selling points of this phone. Common sense is not putting an iPhone underwater.

I went to the pool with a friend and we wanted to test it out (mind you it was only the 4th day of having this phone). We double checked every flap to make sure it was sealed then we tried taking some underwater pictures. The phone did not go deeper than 20cm in the pool. I noticed the screen die (because the notification light was still going off and the volume keys still vibrated). I decided to pull it out and dry it before it got damaged any more. I wrapped it in a towel and set it aside for a few minutes. When I went back to check it there was a tiny hairline crack on the back glass near the camera (but not in the corner). The phone had died completely at this point. I put the phone in my hands and when I felt the screen it kinda felt squishy. When you held it and put a tiny bit of pressure on the screen it would kind of make a squeaky sound.

I'm almost certain the battery shorted out and that's why that happened. I managed to save the sim and SD card.

The phone should have withstanded that, and Sony do say their phones can be used in pool water, contact them and maybe leave out a few details but make sure to get a replacment.

For how long was the phone underwater?

Back when I had my Tablet Z, the most I ever did with it was run it under the sink to clean it and watch YouTube videos in the shower

I never use water to clean my electronics water proof or not.
I use 100% IPA and a microfiber cloth.

I am still waiting for Sony to get back to me :ouch:

Edit: They finally did an told me to contact their repair service.

I will keep y'all posted

That is really odd... I have a Z1C and my mother has a Z3C. First thing we did with them was soak them in water to see how waterproof they are. I have put mine in water loads of time and never heard of anything like that, likewise on the other phone. Maybe just a faulty seal on your phone? Hopefully they will get it sorted for you!

The battery life on this thing is insane. I was screwing around with this all day at work and the battery was still at 65% when I left. Old phone would have been dead twice over.

Ok guys, picking the phone up from the shop after they denied fixing it after looking at it. I'm shipping it to Sony tomorrow.

Did they give you a reason why they declined it.

Let me guess liquid damage.
I can tell you told them this so why didnt they ship it to sony for you

Just to let you know sony will pressure test the unit and if it passes, you're screwed as there is no one else you can turn to(unless canada has consumer rights laws)

Well the store doesn't have to do anything with the phone as it has been water damaged which isn't covered under the warranty. You'll need to talk to Sony directly. Ring their customer support centre before sending it off as you'll need a RA number/job number. If you don't have a case open with them they won't even look at the phone.

They sent me a number and gave me directions. I will be sending it to Sony tonight.

Also, @Grayfox the store didn't say anything. They were to lazy to make something up at all. They didn't ship it for the same reason. They are massive 🤬.

So quoting it, and leaving it untouched even after he removed it, was a brilliant idea!

Gentlemen, let's move on please :).

I'm wondering if users in NA are getting it yet. Sony announced a global release the last few days.

Wasn't like it was intentional :indiff:

You should have gotten it this week weirdly. Check again using the PC companion.

Oh it's just that there were rumors that lollipop testing failed for certain carriers.
so any updates on the phone?

I cant see how an operating system can "fail" for one carrier and not the other running the same LTE frequency

Their failed might be just their way of saying our bloatware apps dont work on lollipop.

iOS doesnt go under any testing and it passes so as soon as apple release it you get it, yet android has to be "tested" each time an update is released?

Yes. American phone carriers can, and have, dictate those sorts of terms if the phone is carrier branded.
Telstra in australia blocks all OTA versions of android for testing even if the phone was bought outright.

On what grounds could he do that? I can't think of any way it would come off as other than "My specific phone was defective, so none of them should be advertised as capable"
