"Standards" the good, the bad and the ugly

I don't think it can be worse than this. Those are obvious PS1 graphics

Not PS2! Why does everyone think that PS2 looked so bad??

Good job @Mikhail K.
I agree too that there is need for a common definition for these cars that have clearly been improved since GT5, but have varying quality (from just above GT4 standards, to almost Premium level). It looks like some users don't like them to be called "semi-premium".

Some of the updates are essentially a premium-level model, and for those, I think "semi-premium" is entirely appropriate. The only place where I might object to the term "semi-premium" are the ones where they've just done a cleanup of the lines and added panel gaps but haven't made any significant improvements to the model or the textures.

e.g. the Bluebird '69 is semi-premium, the Skyline '63 is touched-up standard.

It's not all that subjective, either. Headlights/taillights are a good benchmark. If they're the same as GT5, it's more touched-up, if they're remodeled, it's more semi-premium.

Because it does. Nowadays, anyway, with our modern 21st century high resolution TVs. PS1 graphics were far far worse (not for their time obviously, but by today's standards), I don't know why everyone forgets what PS1 graphics looked like. I'm fairly certain that car is just a direct port of the GT4 model with no changes made whatsoever. That's just what GT4's models look like when blown up to 1080p and contrasted with high-def everything else.

Haha, I still have a working PS2 and trust me, GT4 looks horrible for today's standards and looks horrible compared to GT5/GT6. The thing is, back then it looked good in Small Definition tube televisions. :D
Looks like I'll have to take back what I said earlier. I fired up GT4 and took the Alto for a spin. It really did look that bad after all. Poor, poor thing.

I played GT4 today and the cars looked better than the standards in GT5... But maybe it is what you said - the contrast between high and low res.

The above post though reminded me that the Alto was a standard even in GT4! So GT4 did have premiums and standards, though they weren't that different.

There were many deceivingly good-looking Standard cars in GT5.
I don't see this as a problem. Much better than "clearly not very good looking." ;)

I know it's been a while since many of us played GT4, but there were a few cars of low quality. The Opel Speedster was another. It didn't have bad textures, but the car model was very blocky and low poly. It stuck out like a sore thumb in GT5, but it may be the most improved model in GT6, and looks very nice.

Because it's the truth... PS2 graphics are pretty bad if you compare them to today standards, and obviously the PS1 ones are much much worse. Take a look at the post where I compare PS1 and PS2 graphics.

Now I see, after Hyland's post with the Alto in GT4...

It is PS2 graphics but because of the low resolution on PS2 it didn't look as bad in a way. EDIT: Treed
Anyway, I've just noticed the 90's Integra's must be undergoing premium treatment (mainly the '95) because when you look at the interior, you can see the red bucket seats are slightly modelled and so is the steering wheel when you look at it from a certain angle.

The one on the right (R) was a purpose built racer, that had a number of modification, weight reduction, suspension changes etc., the one on the left was sold through dealerships, I believe all of them for that year where painted white with blue stripes. The following year 66' the Hertz cars came out with different colors.
A 2kg weight reduction?

In real life, the R is the racing version of the Shelby GT350.

The quote comes from this article:
http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1081426_rare-1965-shelby-gt350r-hits-the-block-in-scottsdal

Although, it does seem pointless to have in GT6 now since you can give the normal GT350 a weight reduction, mod the suspension, & change the bumpers to a similar style to the R.
It's more pointless because they're spec'd almost identically.
Is the roofline really lower too?

The new PS3 standard cars must've been made for the next game on PS4, it makes no sense to waste time remodeling these cars to this standard otherwise. If we look at the pulled photos of the PS4 Gran Turismo scanning session the Alfa race car was being scanned, the Lancia rally cars were also present, these cars in GT6 are still the same awful PS2 standard models as there's no need to bring them up to the new PS3 standard model level as they're getting the full premium treatment.

The car quality split will still be alive and kicking next gen, imo.

You never know, the premiumized models might come as DLC for GT6, if PD knew the cars would take longer than their deadline allowed.
