In that case, just make the entire crossguard out of that stuff then. Doesn't need to cut anything.
Because like Imari basically saying, "Why not use the Force?", there's a reason for it (in their case, a Jedi does not believe in using the Force unless necessary & there's several different abilities of the Force).

Phrik is expensive material to manufacture in the SW universe.

Sorry, but that wasn't a spoiler... Just my own theory. I did say IMHO. I've avoided spoilers myself and feel exactly the same way that you do regarding them ruining a film.

Besides, you're the one who brought up how the person holding it may have hand which cannot be cut by a lightsaber.

After I saw the word 'Luke' I ran away, that's why! Seriously I wasn't thinking Luke when I said that, thought it might be some half man General Grievous esque creation TBH.

Doesn't feel like a Star Wars film to me... seems more like Abrams wanted to make it "his own". Despite the prequel trilogies obvious shortcomings, they did at list look and feel like Star Wars... this, I don't know... the Star Trek vibe is coming through too loudly. And what the hell is with the shaky camera work??...

I guess because my own theory is that it's Luke, I automatically assumed... Well, you know.

haha, that is definitely not Luke with the cross-saber. Pretty certain it's Adam Driver's character, who's supposed to be playing a Sith fanboy Rebel Pilot lured to the darkside by Andy Serkis's character, who is a really powerful force user/entity - possibly Darth Plagueis. Luke seems to be in deep exile from what I've heard.

All this debate over the practicality of the lightsaber isn't relative to what the thing is supposed to represent. It's probably an old relic weapon or some crude design put together by the guy in haste/without much knowledge. That's from what I've read.

I'm extremely excited about the flim though, the preview is right up my alley. There is just so much they can do in terms of story, I can't wait to find out how it all unravels. I'm paying very close attention to developments. Can't believe it's really happening now. Ever since that announcement of Disney's takeover, doesn't seem like that long ago, but when the movie was first talked about, it felt like it wouldn't happen for so long, but we're here, so lucky.

Been watching reaction videos to the trailer last night, and I found it funny how there is so much controversy over the new lightsaber but in all the videos I've watched the reactions towards it have been of amazement. Lots of double reactions of "Ohhh" when the first blade comes out, and "OHHHHHHH!!!" when the little ones appear. I didn't see one video with negative comments on it.

Anyway, having watched it a million times now, something came to my attention. In the first scene with John Boyega's charactor, when he turns away from the camera to look behind him, you can hear someone say something over a communication radio. Can anyone make it out?

Loving the new Lightsaber...

that's all it is. Just a sword. :P

My brother-in-law is a massive STAR WARS fan, and he reckons that it's going to be a two-handed broadsword. It's less about finesse and more about overwhelming your opponent as quickly as possible.

But these are Sith Inquisitors so they aren't known for that type of force manipulation or sword style. In fact it would make more sense for a Sith Warrior like Maul to own this instead or a Juggernaut type.

Also there have been strange blades like this in the novels and comics so I'm not sure why there is a big "why is it like that, that's dumb", I'm guessing those side portions can be turned on and off if needed through force manipulation.

I put together the Force Awakens character trading cards on one sheet for easy printing!
Be careful if you want to avoid any spoilers as it reveals some of the main character's names.

Glad the went with a movie about X-Wings and TIE fighters.

Strange they didn't keep JJ Abrams on for Episode VIII.

Anyone worried that Disney might do a 'Marvel' and start pumping out origin and expanded universe films like water?

No better than Lucas ruining it ... more starwars the better i hope disney release the blurays of the film without lucass additions my eyes bleed. That's why i have a laserdisc version :boggled:. Marvel gotta pump the content out, its there business model is it a comic a month or fortnight?

After the Star Wars drought I agree its a welcome sight but Disney ruining it could end up being just as bad as Lucas ruining it but in a different way.

It just my opinion but not a fan of these often low quality, quickly put together multiple Marvel films, covering each character in a detail I don't want to know about. They come across as a huge cash grab... such as those lead in adverts *ahem films into Avengers Assemble. I don't want Rogue One to be like this.

Yes the comic book business is different but I think the damage is the same, in the end you dilute the brand. Star Wars is already too commercial IMO, is there anything Star Wars you can't buy? and making yearly films I think its eventually going to put people off.

It would be good if Disney release the films in original form.

i do agree to a point, i aint a marvel fan or have any interest in american comics at all. But all i got to say is 007 james bond, people eat it up some are good some are bad but w still want to see the next one. Were as Starwars is set in another universe all together you can be even more imaginative. The best alternative to Disney would be Pixar.

I think we should keep open minded and not shoot it down before they even released the first film, after all disney brought back the original cast not even lucas could do that, instead when had the likes of jar jar and 90% cgi.:nervous:

You mean Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk? Low quality?

Or are you talking about the cartoons? That's a whole different situation that involves making a kid friendly version of the stories for dads like me to be able to share their lifelong comic fandom with their young kids. Those have allowed me to get my daughter interested in comics. As she just turned five I can't be showing her any of the theatrical releases.

I don't know if creating a larger universe that multiple titles interact in dilutes the brand. It creates a continuity that Hollywood fails to maintain even a sequel (I'm looking at you Transformers).

Star Wars is already too commercial IMO, is there anything Star Wars you can't buy?
That has always been the case.

It depends on how it is done. If they are all quality, then no. If they spread it out over more than one medium it works well, because they can tie in without us needing to have seen everything.

I think where Marvel's process works that won't for many others is that their core fan base is used to a giant continuity. Marvel took their books, tweaked the stories just enough to fit a two hour format, and then threw it in the screen and said, "this is the world they live in. Accept it or move along." It worked. Most original fans are happy (except for IM3) and new fans latched on. The secret was maintaining that sense of fun that made kids in my generation run around in Superman underoos with a blanket or towel tied around our necks like a cape.

It's very difficult to predict what audiences want. Some of the worst James Bond films - like Die Another Day - came about because the producers tried to follow through on the things that has been well-received by target audiences. And there are some good ones - The Living Daylights springs to mind, and to a lesser extent, For Your Eyes Only - that faltered because they tried to go in a new direction that was out of step with audiences.
