So were ET and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Science fiction is not a license to have plot holes in the story or make your main characters do stupid things because, well, science fiction.

The issue is that a lot of writers these days (I'm looking directly at Orci/Kurtzman) think that if you design your action scenes and then have your characters mumble nonsense to fill in the gaps that is all that matters. It might get big cash, but that doesn't mean it is good. Enjoyable and fun, yes. Good, no.

I own Star Trek Into Darkness, but every time I watch it I'm wondering what blithering idiot wrote the script. Bill & Ted movies had more coherent stories than a lot of sci-fi today.
You have to give Into Darkness points though. It was never intended as a sci-fi movie, as was the first one. Orci and Kurtzman deliberately wrote the movie the way that they did was because Star Trek, as a franchise, was dead or nearly dead. They had no presence on TV (Enterprise was canceled after 4 seasons of a planned 7), the last Star Trek film before the 2009 film, Nemesis, had a loss, taking in $43 million in the US from a $60 million budget.

If anything, the last two Star Trek films turned the franchise around.

It wasn't? So personal interplanetary warp devices, cryogenically preserved, genetically altered supermen, cure for death, and a new warship design were not intended to be sci-fi? No wonder it had issues. The writers don't know sci-fi and made it accidentally.

First of all, $67 million worldwide is not a loss. Not impressive, but not a loss. But that's just details. Your point is still valid.

Since Roddenberry died things went downhill. Anytime Roddenberry wasn't involved Star Trek suffered. See Star Trek: TOS Season 3.

Financially, yes. But in general, things should be allowed to die. Do I have to list the horrible sci-fi remakes?

The problem Abrams has is that he made action films when the series was originally conceived around the idea of humans exploring the frontier of the galaxy, coming into contact with new civilisations, and considering the implications of it.

A few articles recently mentioned possible Ep 7 concept art. Either in the form of a description or posting actual images from an alleged leak. Chances are some (if not all) are fake anyway.

For those curious.

The fact that the site has been taken down lends credibility to it. Besides, those paintings have a look of production paintings. A couple of them coincide with reported story leaks, especially the ones they have labeled Grave Robber & Zorro...

SPOILER: According to several story leaks, the Sith Lord cradling Darth Vader's "head" is actually Luke Skywalker. To me, this makes perfect sense as Star Wars has always foreshadowed itself story-wise. It's almost predictable for Luke to follow in Anakin's footsteps. We all seen the image of Luke behind the mask in the cave on Dagobah and Vader even told Luke that the dark side was his destiny. Besides, who else is going to grave-rob Vader's helmet, let alone cradle (and apparently talk to) the damned thing?.. And notice the right hand. If all this turns out to be the case, I now want the story between Jedi & Episode VII.

Well, weren't there rumours of a flashback scene a while back? I'm trying to take all this speculation with a grain of salt but I can't help put two and two together with some of them!

Whoa, hold on. Where was that? I feel I may have missed something here and for the most part, I've seen everything.

I hadn't heard that one, but... If it were a now dark Luke flashing back to his own turning, I could live with that.

Holy...crap...

That scene from The Empire Strikes Back...it makes sense now.

That scene has always been kinda mysterious. Is it telling Luke that Darth Vader is his Father? Is it warning him that he could become like Darth Vader (although, why would something in the dark cave try and prevent someone from turning to the dark side?)? Maybe, it is truly predicting Luke's future?

Another scene to think about is the one where Vader was speaking with the Emperor's hologram in Empire. That scene is extremely telling if one thinks about it. Vader acts surprised/uninformed when Palpatine starts talking about the Son of Skywalker, yet we already know that Vader is well aware of Luke, as he senses & mentions him when he sees the transmission from the probe droid on Hoth (it doesn't appear to surprise Vader at all). Yet (when speaking with the Emperor) Vader pretends to be oblivious regarding Luke's existence even though he slips, saying he is just a boy and how Obi-Wan can no longer help him. It really doesn't matter though, since Vader & Palps are both playing each other. Vader offers to turn Luke and get him to join them and Palps agrees. Knowing there are only ever two Sith, they must both now know that the other is plotting against him. Vader knows because Palps agreed to the plan. If Luke joins, Palps has a new apprentice. Luke will be ordered to kill him just as he was ordered to kill Dooku (only two). Palps also now knows, as Vader's offer to bring in a third means he is planning his overthrow. That's just the way of the Sith. Anyway, what this scene tells me is that Vader had been plotting against Palpatine for a long, long time. Quite likely since right after he (Anakin) turned and realized Palpatine had lied about being able to save Padme. Vader had (IMHO) probably watched Luke for many years. Vader never went after Ben? Why? The answer is in what Vader said to Palpatine... Obi-Wan can no longer help him. As I have already established, Vader knew about Luke's existence and lied about that knowledge. How could he not think to look for him with his own family? Vader could have found Luke & Ben very easily. Vader wanted Luke trained. He just couldn't do it himself.

Just something to think about.

Just a little side note regarding the Sith holding Vader's helm...

Notice he is missing his right hand?
Definitely not Luke, well, probably not Luke... Well...

Luke's right hand was replaced by a prosthetic one (Cyberdine model, living tissue over metal)

One has to assume it got damaged and metal hands are way more cool when you're a Sith Lord :P

However, it's nice to know the left hand remains intact ... there's hope still

It's added something almost tangible to the hype while keeping things ambiguous, which is all it needed to do. Plus an obligatory Falcon scene that was shot in a way that gives a clear indication as to who is directing.

Also sounds like Serkis and (possibly) Driver doing the voice overs? The first voice definitely has a hint of Caesar. Almost everyone else seems adamant that it's Benedict Cumberbatch, who isn't even part of the cast. :odd:

The last line delivery does sound like Max. Though I can't help but think that the first few words sound like they're provided by someone else.

dat light saber has ridiculous side lights ... must work as hand protection, in case some Jedi's sword slides through the main blade  ... I suppose JJ Abrams could do a red circular shield instead of those two side-appendices.

Whilst obscuring the way it's not actually doing anything. If you follow its trajectory, it goes up, comes down, and rolls over.

But along with the lens flare, that's another Abrams staple - trying to make up for his boring action sequences with ridiculous cinematography. The man has no grasp of how to shoot motion.

LOOK AT THAT LENS FLARES GODDAMM.

Typical JJ Abrams......Wait the person who resurrect Star Trek now Resurrect Star Wars? Thats like seeing Christopher Nolan directing Spiderman Movie :(

And? Its well known fact that Abrams is a huge Star Wars fan.

Also:

After watching the trailer, that's what I feel like right now. Couldn't help but go ape deep inside as soon as it got to the Falcon scene.
