Strange noise heard around the world

Now that sounds interesting. Got a link for the earthquake lightning? Quite honestly, the correlation between those sounds and an earthquake is so far the most probable I can think of. Was there any recordings of the sound linked in this thread? I'd like to hear some.
Btw, just looked up earthquake lightning, that is pretty neat.

Slickly produced video brings the Strange noise heard around the world thread up to date. They say the cause is a mystery which is increasing, and increasingly weird. Yet there must be an answer, or solution(s), you would think. So in which thread, if any, will we ultimately consign this thread?
- Illuminati and Other Conspiracies
- Global Warming/Climate Change
- Do you believe in God?
- Aliens
- Space in General
- Apocalypse, Cataclysm and Mega-Disaster

I think that video at 3:30 is fabricated. I've heard my share of loud noises, including sonic booms, and in no case have I ever experienced or seen video of a surprising loud noise, especially one with enough pressure to set off car alarms, that didn't make people shake of flinch when it happened. That video is stable as can be, and I don't think it's because of the phone's technology.

I checked with snopes and apparently at least one Canadian claim of a mysterious explosion noise was indeed admitted a hoax. However, snopes also produced a USGS scientist who explained that the majority of the sounds probably are from underground earthquakes.

Keef, if I understand it correctly, you live in Ohio, which is definitely in the New Madrid fault danger zone. Have you or any of your neighbors heard any strange noises lately?

@Rallywagon there are scores of these strange sounds videos posted on YouTube which interview local authorities as to the possible cause, and it is denied that they recorded any earthquake. That is why they are such a mystery. But I now do surmise that the cause is related to precursors of earthquakes.

No strange noises that I can't explain by having lived and listened to this city for 30 years. There have been some weird ones though, explosions and train horns and thundersnow included.

We have have an earthquake though. It was roundabout a 4.0, and it woke me up by gently shaking my bunk bed back in middle school.

That's a lot of instances to look up. My first instinct as a pilot would be to check the charts for military restricted areas near these places. I've operated in several of them, and some on land are live bombing ranges, while some at sea such as near Norfolk are for fighter jets transiting to and from carriers. There are a lot of possibilities for unusual noises when it comes to military operations, even training within our own borders. Another thing I would look at are fracking operations. Out in Casper, Wyoming, it took me a while to figure out why the water stunk like sulfur and my hotel would shake occasionally, but I chalked it up to nearby oil and gas operations. There were no noises involved, besides the sounds of wide open spaces, but some barely detectable shaking did happen.

Collection of mystery boom reports (with links) from the past two years. A fraction have been explained.

Huh, one of these was close to where I live! It was definitely a sonic boom though, we have a crazy amount of air bases around here. Just the other day I was driving home and noticed a group of jets flying in formation above the wind farms, it was pretty cool to see!

Sonic booms do happen when aircraft are authorised to high speed over land or, more occasionally, when a plane accidentally exceeds Mach 1. I'd wager that's what many of the above are. The figures suggest two-per-year for Wales alone. Usually it's when QRA aircraft are responding to enemy aircraft at the edge of British airspace or to passenger jets that are causing a security concern.

@Moglet... I'm guessing you're around Lincolnshire, or a little south of that?

@Moglet... I'm guessing you're around Lincolnshire, or a little south of that?

I live in The Fens, I'm in North Cambridgeshire so not too far south of Lincolnshire. RAF Wyton is my nearest base, RAF Wittering is just the other side of Peterborough so is also relatively close, and there's also RAF Marham to the east.

EDIT: RAF Alconbury is also close by, but that's a non-flying station home to the 423d Air Base Group of the USAF. I see a lot of imported US vehicles being driven about which is cool. :)

New round of mystery boom reports.
Four reports from Arizona, North Carolina and Kentucky.
Sonic booms, earthquakes and mining operations appear to be ruled out. Law enforcement authorities and university academics appear at a loss for explanation.
In one instance, the noise was reported accompanied by a vertical column of light.

Reports of mysterious booms in Tucson area

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD News 13) - Something is shaking the southwest and it's been baffling southern Arizona residents for years.

The latest struck this morning, Tuesday, Feb 5, at 8:39 a.m. I felt it myself on the northwest side of town not far from Ina and I-10. I posted it on Facebook and the responses were immediate.

Faye DeHoff wrote, "first it was a major rattle...like a huge truck about to plow into my home...then the boom..that shook my windows...I was sure some of them were broken but they didn't...my dog jumped up! I'm at River & Campbell."

Ray C. Merrill wrote, "Oracle and Roger, it was shaking pretty good, and long enough for me to watch the blinds dance around, then get up and walk to the doorway, and it was still shaking."

There was a similar sensation last week on Thursday, Jan 31 at 8:51 a.m. The same phenomenon; a rumble causing homes to shake and windows to rattle. I felt this one too on the northwest side and once again, so did so many others on Facebook all across Tucson and surrounding areas.

I checked with the three closest military installations. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base reported no sonic booms and neither did the 162nd Fighter Wing. Sean Clements from Luke Air Force Base’s public affairs unit confirmed two sonic booms near Sells, Arizona, about 60 miles southwest of Tucson. BOOM. Mystery solved. Until he gave the times. The first happened at 9:36 a.m. and the second at 10:14 a.m. The incident so many reported feeling and hearing happened at 8:51 a.m. The times are off by more than a half-hour. Not even close.

Earthquakes might be more common that you might think in Arizona. Looking at the U.S. Geological Survey earthquake detector, there were no quakes at these particular times eliminating that possibility.

I checked with the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona regarding the January 31st incident. Eric Kiser, an assistant professor, noticed readings on the measuring machine, “there is a high frequency signal on the Tucson seismometer between 8:51 a.m. and 8:52 a.m. today (see picture below), but the signal looks quite a bit different than what we observed when the widespread tremors were felt about a year ago. In particular, last year’s signal lasted a few seconds, where as the signal from today lasts 40 to 60 seconds.”

Assistant professor Kiser provided information regarding another incident that occurred on Nov. 28, 2017 saying, “I looked through the Tucson station seismic data this morning, and there definitely is an event that shows up around 8:11-8:12 p.m. (See picture below). The seismology group looked at the waveforms today, but it is difficult to determine what the source is, using one seismic station. Generally, we would expect a sonic boom to not be as impulsive as this signal. A mine blast could be the source, but I would be surprised if they were blasting that late.”

Mining is big business in southern Arizona and blasting is very common so I spoke with Debbie McMorrow at ASARCO mining which owns and operates several mines around Tucson. She says ASARCO doesn’t usually conduct blasting in the mornings and certainly did not conduct any today or last week during the times people felt the shaking.

CalPortland also conducts blasting operations but an employee told me today the company has not done any blasting in the Tucson area since January 29.

Through the process of elimination for these three incidents, it can be concluded that these booms/rumblings were not caused by a sonic boom, earthquake, or mine blasting operations. And so the mystery continues...

Blast, booms continue to plague residents near line between Wake, Franklin counties
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - The sudden loud booms recently heard near the Wake County-Franklin County line match descriptions of similar sounds in other parts of the country.

Several of CBS 17's sister stations have also talked to homeowners whose walls rattled and floors shook when mysterious blasts occurred nearby.

WRBL, the CBS affiliate in Columbus, Georgia, investigated noises in December. Warner-Robins Air Force Base and Fort Benning denied creating the sounds.

Edwards Air Force Base near Bakersfield, California told KGET-TV it played no role in a round of booms this time last year.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's WHTM received numerous calls about booms in early January. A nearby military post told WHTM its training exercises were not to blame. One theory proposed by WHTM viewers is the sound results from marksmen shooting cans of Tannerite.

Several comments on the CBS 17 Facebook page also suggested the explosive targets as the reason for the noise.

One person commented "I’m going to guess someone is playing with Tannerite" while a second backed the idea with the note "Still say someone’s messing with tannerite."

Another person wrote "It's tannerite. How dumb are the authorities? It's happening during the day. They just go back far enough into the wood so no one hears the gun shot that sets it off."

Kevin Johnson, who sells half-pound tins of the components at Eagle 1 Supply in Raleigh, is skeptical the small targets could make such a loud noise.

Prices range from $3 to $15, so Johnson said it would be very expensive to buy enough cans to make repeated booms, and a single blast would create a crater in the ground.

"To make the noise, just from what I've read and from your articles, to make that kind of noise, truthfully, you would have to have at least five to 10 pounds of this stuff to make that kind of noise," Johnson said.

"And then on top of that, it would leave a substantial void almost the size of half of this table where it went off."

Johnson said the small explosive targets are amusements which are more commonly bought by younger gun enthusiasts.

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base officials said their planes and training exercises are not the cause of the booms. Other local agencies tell CBS 17 they are unaware of any possible cause.

Law enforcement in Wake and Franklin Counties confirm receiving more than a dozen complaint calls about the noises since late January.

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Families in a Davidson community are frightened after hearing a mysterious loud boom on Monday. The Davidson Police Department is investigating.

"So I was putting her down for a nap and I swear it like shook our entire house," Jacqueline Hawtin said. "I was scared."

This is normally a quiet neighborhood, but a loud mysterious boom sent people into a panic.

"I called my husband," Hawtin said. "I called my neighbor."

Hawtin hurried out the door with her young daughter, Harley.

"I looked over here to make sure no one hit the garage or anything," Hawtin said.

There was nothing there. But in the last week, Davidson Police say they've gotten multiple mysterious boom reports.

Last February, a boom in Gaston County caught on camera sent social media into a frenzy.

"Just imagine a large amount of air hitting you in the chest," Danny Cloninger said.

The woman who posted it publicly apologized saying, "it was only for pure fun and not to scare anyone."

In Davidson, some are still not sure what they heard.

"It was dark in the room," Hawtin said. "It shook and I still don't know what it was."

It’s louder than fireworks, a transformer explosion or even a train. “This is five times as loud as that,” said Theresa Smith of Lyndon.

“The sounds I hear have nothing to do with trains. More like muffled dynamite,” former CSX engineer Scott Gaw weighed in.

People living in Lyndon, St. Matthews, Hurstbourne, Graymoor Devondale, Woodlawn Park and surrounding neighborhoods have been discussing mysterious, recurring booms for months. The booms have sparked several active conversations on the Nextdoor App as well as Facebook groups. No one seems to know the source of what they’re hearing, but they agree, it’s loud—sometimes loud enough to shake a house.

In January, Barbara Martin says she was watching the football playoffs at a friend’s house in Jeffersontown near the Gene Snyder when two loud booms shook the house.

In a quest for answers, some homeowners have started conducting research of their own. Jennifer Whitfield called local utility companies, police and fire departments. Based on reports from neighbors in her area, she believes the source of the booms is within a three to five mile radius of Holiday Manor. “The general time seems to be 8:00 pm to 8:30 p.m.,” Whitfield says. Other neighbors have reported hearing the booms as late at 10:40 p.m. and as early as 4:00 a.m. Some even say they’ve seen a flash of light associated with it.

“Sometime around November… I had my own experience,” says Matthew Messer of St. Matthews. “I had just turned east on Columbia Avenue from Marquette Drive when I happened to notice a single bright light shoot up into the sky behind me, followed by what sounded like a mortar type firework being launched. About five seconds later, right as I was about to turn left… I heard a very loud explosion that genuinely surprised me, as it was much louder than a standard mortar-type firework.”

These mysterious booms have been reported in East Louisville during all seasons and at all hours of the day. So, what are they and from where are they coming? WLKY took some rumored theories to the experts.

We first reached out to Fort Knox to investigate if the source could be military exercises known to carry sound. Media Relations Officer Kyle Hodges requested specific dates and times so he could check the base’s training log. None of them checked out. Hodges says, “My Range Control team does not believe we were the source of the booms. They checked the dates and times you sent against their training log and could not find a direct correlation. Training was complete well before the times mentioned on Jan. 6 and 13. On Jan. 12, we did have an engineer unit conducting light demolition training from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., but they don't believe the sound of that specific type of training would've carried much farther than the Radcliff area – definitely not enough to shake folk's homes in east Louisville.”

Hodges’ team recommended checking with the FAA to see if anything supersonic was flying through that area at the designated times.

FAA Frontline Manager Mike Shaw says he’s not aware of any booms related to air traffic. “If it happened in Lyndon, we’d know it. Our office is off Hurstbourne Lane and we have had no complaints to our office.” Shaw says it’s been at least five years since he’s heard complaints about military helicopters in the area, and he says it’s a much different sound than the boom described. Shaw recommended we double check with Air Traffic Control at Standiford Field.

Unfortunately, that didn’t lead to answers either. Air Traffic Control employee Stephanie Kimmel says, “My supervisors and I checked the log with the dates you gave me and I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.”

WLKY then reached out to Kentuckiana Seismic & Survey, Inc., once again sending a list of specific dates and times. Vice President Joey Hopper responded saying, “Of the projects that Kentuckiana Seismic & Survey is involved on, we have no blasting projects that were operating in those locations on those dates.

Similar responses came from representatives with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet as well as Louisville’s Department of Public works and Transportation Department: no projects in the area and no known blasting that would cause the booms.

WLKY also reached out to officials with Graymoor Devondale Police, Lyndon City Hall and the St. Matthews Fire Department. Representatives from each say they’ve heard complaints—some have even heard the booms—but they did not know the source.

A Google search of “mysterious booms” suggests frost quakes could be the answer. A frost quake occurs when underground water freezes and expands quickly. The expansion pushes against soil and rock and can cause the ground to crack, creating a boom. WLKY Meteorologist John Belski says a frost quake is not likely the source of what people in Louisville are hearing. “When Chicago had 25 below they were having frost quakes, and even Cincinnati had a few, but I haven’t heard of any in our area. It’s more of an extreme cold phenomenon,” he says.

Another theory that didn’t pan out—local rock quarries. WLKY reached out to Rogers Group Inc, Jefferson County Stone in Louisville. Company representative Scott Chancellor says they conduct underground blasting, “but you wouldn’t be able to hear it. We’re so deep underground.” He says the only other quarries in our area are in Oldham and Bullitt Counties and it’s a similar situation there.

Finally, WLKY reached out to U.S. Geological Survey Geophysicist John Bellini, who’s based in Golden, Colorado. Bellini says, “Generally booming sounds are not easily recordable by seismometers. We’re not seeing anything in Kentucky, and we haven’t seen anything in that area for a while. We can occasionally can pick up a booming sound if it’s happening near a seismometer, for example a natural gas explosion, but these instruments are not built to detect booms. Seismometers are meant to pick up movement in the ground.” Bellini double checked his records with four specific reports of the booming sound in our area.

January 2 at 8:15 p.m. in Lyndon, KY

January 6 at 10:00 p.m. in Lyndon, KY

January 11 at 4:06 a.m. in Lyndon, KY

January 12 at 10:44 p.m. in Jeffersontown, KY

“I looked at our nearest station and nothing came up. I even looked at the records from stations as far as an hour away and nothing turned up there either.” Bellini reiterated, “This is typical with booming sounds.”

WLKY reached out to the University of Louisville’s Geology Department and are waiting to hear back.

Have you heard the booms? Can you record them? If so, please send video or tape recordings to jdolan@hearst.com

Russian space telescope discovers light explosions, a new physical phenomenon. This may explain the world-wide mystery booms.

Russian Satellite Spots Mysterious Explosions in Earth’s Atmosphere
Paul SeaburnFebruary 14, 2019
It’s unusual when the U.S. government reveals information about unusual occurrences or events in space … especially without the intervention of a rock star. It’s even more unusual for the Russian government to do it. Yet that’s what’s happening in Moscow where a leading scientist revealed that a Russian satellite has picked up strange explosions of light that researchers are unable to explain. Инопланетяне? (Russian for “Aliens?” – at least that’s what Google Translate claims.)

“With the help of the telescope, we have obtained even more important results than we expected. It looks like we have encountered new physical phenomena… We do not yet know their physical nature… For example, during Lomonosov’s flight at an altitude of several dozen kilometres, we have registered several times a very powerful ‘explosion’ of light. But everything was clear underneath it, no storms, no clouds.”

“We do not yet know their physical nature.” That’s not the kind of thing Russians are accustomed to hearing from officials, but that’s exactly what Mikhail Panasyuk, the director of the Research Institute of Nuclear Physics at the Russian State University, told Sputnik News this week. An ultraviolet telescope installed on the Russian satellite Lomonosov — launched in 2016 and named for Mikhail Lomonosov, the Russian mathematical genius and scientist whose discoveries include the atmosphere of Venus and the law of conservation of mass in chemical reaction – picked up light “explosions” in the upper atmosphere where Lomonosov was supposed to be observing gamma-ray bursts, high-energy cosmic rays and transient (short-duration) atmospheric phenomena.

770px-BigRed-Sprite-570x444.jpg

Sprite

Technically, “transient phenomena” describes the mysterious lights observed by the Lomonosov satellite, but Panasyuk and other scientists are concerned because they can’t identify them beyond “light explosions.” Sprites are similar light flashes that appear above thunderstorms, but there were no storm clouds under these lights and so little is known about sprites that it’s not even a certainly that they can be picked up by a UV telescope. The researchers have eliminated ground explosions and missile or rocket launches. It’s possible that the explosions could be the result of secret weapons testing, but good luck getting the Russian government to admit to that. By process of elimination, that leaves … Инопланетяне!

Before you toss out the possibility of “Aliens!”, there’s one more strange occurrence to report:

“On June 30, 2018, the Head of Nuclear Physics Institute of Moscow State University, NIIYaF MGU, Mikhail Panasyuk, confirmed the report by the RIA Novosti news agency that Mikhailo Lomonosov, one of only two dedicated scientific satellites operated by Russia, had suffered a failure of its data transmission system.”

Any ideas?

These light explosions occurred some time before June 30, 2018, when Russian space watchers the satellite suffered a malfunction and has been shut down ever since. So, the news of the event has been hidden for almost a year, the Lomonosov mysteriously malfunctioned and was shut down, and suddenly the same head scientist has decided to talk about it with the media. Is he worried? Are the Russians? Should we be?

All together now … Инопланетяне!

Unusual clouds and ugly sound in Slovakia.
Hoax, HAARP, or underground activity are suggested as possible explanations.

Mysterious sounds heard "all over Slovakia"... uh, no. I've never encountered anything like that in Bratislava where I live, the capital, and given that there's no indication of where it is apart from "Slovakia", I'm calling [citation needed] on it being heard all over the country.

I would like to know where in the country it is; I could then find out how much heavy industry is in the vicinity. I used to hear "weird metallic noises" from the industrial estate in my hometown in Wales quite a lot but given that they came from a single, large industrial estate containing a steelworks, a paper mill, a Toyota engine factory and two power stations amongst several other minor businesses, it wasn't that unusual.

Ooh, excellent. A second video with a location citation for Bratislava gives me the chance to play the explanatory skeptic. :D

In which case I am happy to impart that in the south east side of town in Vlcie Hrdlo there is an oil refinery with an extensive marshalling yard (US: classification yard). Immediately west of that is Pristav, the harbour district with one of the busiest inland freight ports in Europe in addition to a shipbuilding yard.

There's a secondary, general marshalling yard in Vajnory, the north-east part of town.

In Devinska Nova Ves at the extreme west of the city limits is a large Volkswagen factory (1,780,058m^2 / 19,160,380 ft^2) that is a combined manufacturing and processing plant.

Or, given that the video is dated 2013 it could be one of innumerable high-rise construction projects as this taken-5-minutes ago view from my office demonstrates:

I might not be an X-File "I want to believe type" because of course heavy industry is the perfect cover for black project weird noises but I do enjoy rationalising and finding Occam's razor when possible. ;)

A green fireball comes down, causing a widespread flash, rumble, then earthquake-like seismic reverberations in a region not at all known for earthquakes. WTF?

Earthquake, rumble or something else? Seismologist says Space Coast rattle remains unidentified

J.D. Gallop, Florida TodayPublished 3:51 p.m. ET March 11, 2019 | Updated 5:32 p.m. ET March 11, 2019

Geologist, Dr. Bob Hatcher explains the frequency of regional earthquakes and how they differ from those along West Coast faultlines.

A mysterious rumble that rattled patio doors and shook houses across the Space Coast Friday evening was not an earthquake, said the U.S. Geological Survey. But a seismologist with the agency is hard-pressed to say exactly what it was that shook homes from Cocoa to Merritt Island.

“We looked into this and we didn’t see any evidence of a tectonic earthquake. It could have been something that didn’t originate in the ground,” said Paul Earle, a seismologist with the USGS, the scientific agency that monitors earthquakes across the globe.

Small earthquake shakes up residents in Florida's Panhandle

More: Fireball caught on video over Florida

If the strange rumblings had been detected, it would have been the first of its kind, seismic activity for the area since 2006. It was then that more than 3,000 residents from across the state, including Rockledge to Melbourne, felt tremors stemming from a 6.0 magnitude earthquake centered several hundred miles away in the Gulf of Mexico.

Melbourne Police Department chief David Gillespie talks about a shooting that happened near Stone Middle School Monday afternoonTyler Vazquez

Earthquakes, however, are a rare occurrence in the Sunshine State, which sits on a cushion of porous limestone and bedrock. That said, a 2.6 magnitude earthquake was reported 10:45 p.m. Wednesday in Century, a Santa Rosa County town along the western stretch of the Florida Panhandle.

No significant damage was reported, however.

“These are very rare for Florida. It’s one of the least seismically active states,” Earle said.

Sometimes the earth may move as a result of a man-made phenomenon such as a rocket launch or the shock waves from an overhead airplane, even heavy trucks or trains, experts said.

The weather may also play a role, with some experts pointing to the coinciding of some tremor reports with the arrival of large, cold air masses, according to a 1991 report prepared by the Department of Natural Resources.

Patrick Air Force Base officials also heard of the reports from Friday but said there were no military air exercises involved that could have caused the shaking.

“We’ve been informed that there have been reports of a rumbling noise in the Space Coast area this past Friday. Having checked with our local organizations within the 45th Space Wing, it does not appear to have come from us. So I cannot comment at this time as to its origin.”

On Feb. 12, some residents from Titusville to Palm Bay reported on social media being shaken after what turned out to be a footlong-sized fireball that exploded in the nighttime skies over the Atlantic Ocean with a force equal to 100 tons of TNT.

That bright, green meteor was detected by a private network that contracts with NASA’s Planetary Defense Office to monitor asteroids, meteors and fireballs across the globe.

In 2016, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake was reported just off the coast of Daytona Beach, just to the north of Brevard County. Authorities in that case later determined that it was man-made, triggered by U.S. Navy testing.

IMO something big is going on deep within the Earth, and is manifesting as strange booms, noises and occasional flashes of light at the surface. I think what is causing the disturbances of the core, mantle, Moho or crust, whatever it is, is related to solar and cosmic inputs. But as you will see from the current status report below, there is very widespread confusion and disagreement over what is really going on. So my guess is only one of many.

Mystery Booms Continue Around the US and Nobody Knows Why

Brett TingleyMarch 28, 2019

Another month has passed, and the mystery boom phenomenon continues without a definitive explanation. Throughout March, several incidents of unexplained explosion noises have added to the already large and still growing body of evidence suggesting either an unknown natural occurrence or some type of unidentified man made activity is leading to these loud, powerful, and anomalous noises. I’ve collected hundreds of reports of these mystery booms over the past few years in an attempt to discover what may be behind the phenomenon, but so far an explanation remains elusive. Are these separate events actually related? And why aren’t they receiving more attention?

On March 7, residents of Block Island in the U.S. state of Rhode Island were rattled by what was described as an “unexplained boom” early in the morning of Friday, March 1. Sound familiar? Some Block Islanders reported the noise was so loud that they thought something could have exploded inside of their own homes. While scores of residents reported being terrified by the noise, The Block Island Times reports that theories put forth on local social media sites “were mostly whimsical,” with most eyewitnesses choosing to crack jokes about the sky-splitting noise. As has been noted throughout ufology circles for years, joking about something being “aliens” is a great way to discredit those who take the phenomenon seriously. Could someone be leveraging social media to actively discourage serious research into mystery booms?

sky-690293_1920-640x360.jpg

A few days later on March 6, another eerily familiar boom shook the northern Outer Banks off the coast of North Carolina. The U.S. Geographical Survey said the event was not an earthquake, while meteorologists with the National Weather Service reported that there were no weather conditions that could explain the boom. According to the Coastal Review Online, the boom was heard over a broad area, making it unlikely that a singular sonic boom from an aircraft overhead could have caused it. As in many other cases, some type of unknown atmospheric temperature inversion was cited as a possible cause, although there is little hard evidence to support that speculation.

The next day on March 8, another mysterious boom described as a “loud explosion” was heard throughout Liberty, Ohio. “You could feel it like a shock wave,” one Liberty resident told emergency dispatchers after calling 911. “It knocked me out of bed.” Fire crews at the Liberty Fire Station also felt the boom, reporting that the entire fire station shook. So far, the cause of the boom has not been found.

WisconsinLandscape-570x347.jpg

No further booms were reported until March 22, when several cities near Birmingham, Alabama were rattled by a massive explosion in the sky. Like in North Carolina, the U.S. Geological Survey and National Weather Service were baffled. The typical hypotheses were put forward, after which the story was buried by the news cycle as in so many other cases.

In Sacracmento, California, residents of Fair Oaks reportthey’ve have been shaken from their beds at night in recent months by powerful, unexplained booms strong enough to set off car alarms. With no official explanation, people are throwing around all sorts of theories including weather phenomena and secret SpaceX launches. Meanwhile, local police believe the booms are being caused by illegal fireworks.

On March 26, a loud boom shook southern Idaho, the latest in a recent spate of similar booms. According to local radio station KEZJ, the booms are being caused by munitions testing at the nearby Mountain Home Air Force Base.

Also on March 26, North Carolina experienced another mysterious event, but this time whatever happened was powerful enough to register on seismographs. Several counties in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina were rattled by an eerily familiar boom. “I’ll tell you right now, that was the loudest — it shook the whole damn house partner,” one frightened caller told police dispatchers as emergency services in the area were inundated with calls about the boom.

Shortly thereafter, the USGS reported recording two separate 2.6-magnitude earthquakes throughout the state, one of which was not far from the site of several other mysterious booms heard throughout 2018 for which conflicting explanations were offered. While this most recent boom could possibly be explained by seismic activity, there is always the possibility that whatever caused the boom wasn’t an earthquake per se but was powerful enough to rattle the ground and register on seismographs.

darpa2-570x321.jpg

Many aerospace agencies and military branches have been researching hypersonic craft and weapons over the last several years. Could they have anything to do with the phenomenon?

While I normally wouldn’t jump to conclusions without evidence, the spate of other similar events in recent weeks makes this earthquake explanation seem incomplete to me. Then again, sometimes I feel like I’m going crazy, seeing things in the cracks between seemingly disparate news stories and trends which may not really be there. Whatever the case may be, I and other Mysterious Universe writers have been tracking these reports week after week for years, and we’re not alone. Many readers have reached out to me in recent months with their own experiences with mystery booms or their own theories on the phenomenon. Are these incidents in fact related, or could many separate phenomena or forces be causing these booms? If that’s the case, why are so many reports so similar, and why are they occurring with such frequency lately?

So many questions. Are unknown seismic events violently rattling the Earth, or could unknown aircraft be wantonly breaking the sound barrier over residential areas? Is an unknown atmospheric or meteorological forces causing ‘skyquakes’ or other anomalous disturbances, or could industrial operations be to blame? Meteors? Psychological warfare? Aliens? Anybody’s guess is as good as anyone else’s at this point (but it’s likely not aliens).

Someone, somewhere has to know something. Right?

Finally, a rational explanation for the the global mystery noises.

Auroral crackling sounds are related to the electromagnetic resonances of the Earth

A new study shows that the sounds generated at an altitude of 70 to 80 metres are the result of the activation of Schumann resonances

The study is a continuation of a hypothesis that Unto K. Laine, Professor Emeritus, published three years ago on the origin of the sounds heard during the displays of the Northern Lights. His theory postulated that the sounds are generated when a magnetic storm causes charges in the temperature inversion layer of the lower atmosphere, to be discharged at an altitude of 70 to 80 metres.

A recent research paper presented by Laine at the ICSV26 congress in Montreal provides a more detailed account of the sound generation. According to this study, when the Northern Lights occur, the spectrum of the temporal envelope of the crackling noise (or in other words, the rapid changes in the sound amplitude) contain frequencies of the Schumann resonances.

The Schumann resonances refer to the low-frequency electromagnetic resonances occurring around the Earth, the strongest of them being below 50 Hz. Laine has now observed that these resonances generated similar rhythmic structures in all the measured crackling sounds.

’Previous international research has shown that a geomagnetic storm occurring during the Northern Lights reinforces the Schumann resonances. For the first time, such resonances have been found to activate the sound generation mechanism in the temperature inversion layer at altitudes of between 70 to 80 metres where the accumulated electric charges give rise to corona discharges and crackling sounds. In addition to the nine lowest Schumann resonances, the spectra also include their difference and sum frequencies or in other words, distortion components. This non-linearity also lends support to the hypothesis of auroral sounds generation,’ Laine says.

The research material consisted of 25 sound events measured on the ground in September 2001 and in March 2012 in Southern Finland, during the display of active Northern Lights. Although the measurements were conducted at different locations using various equipment, the results nevertheless point to the same direction.

The results will be published today (10 July) at the ICSV26 congress in Montreal, which brings together more than 2,000 researchers in acoustics from around the globe.

Mystery booms back in the news.

San Diego

People from Del Mar to Chula Vista took to social media Wednesday afternoon to report a “boom” that shook doors and startled pets, leading many to speculate that the region had experienced a short, mild earthquake.

Posts on Twitter and Facebook described a loud boom, accompanied by shaking doors and cabinets.

However, that is unlikely to have been the cause of the phenomenon, said Paul Laustsen, a U.S. Geological Survey spokesman.

Houston

Residents throughout a sizeable region of southeast Texas reported hearing and, in some cases, feeling a monstrous mystery boom that rocked the area over the weekend. The unsettling blast occurred on Saturday night somewhere in the Houston area and led to a local TV station being inundated with calls from numerous concerned viewers who heard the unnerving sound in the surrounding cities and towns. "It was like boom," one witness recalled, " it wasn't someone knocking on the door. Our whole house shook."

Attempts by the TV station to figure out what caused the boom have so proven to be futile as calls to a litany of area law enforcement agencies failed to yield any answers.

New Jersey

The US’s mid-Atlantic region was thunderstruck Thursday afternoon by an explosion. According to the United States Geological Survey the first event happened at 1:24 p.m. Eastern Standard Time about 2 miles / 3 kilometers north-northeast of Hammonton, NJ, possibly over Wharton State Forest. Over the next ninety minutes, nine more sonic booms were reported from southern New Jersey to as far north as Connecticut [1][2][3]. William Yeck at the USGS told Philly.com‘s Sam Wood, “We haven’t seen anything to suggest there has been an earthquake. We have been getting a lot of calls and see signals consistent with a sonic boom.” [4]

All of these sound like metal on metal harmonics to me. I also note that in most of these videos there's cloud cover which would help bounce the sound back down, rather than continuing up, allowing the sound to travel further, and adding a creepy reverb. Ship yards, train yards, large industrial plants that lathe large pieces of metal, etc, would all produce sounds very much like those, and with the proper cloud cover can be heard miles away. That last video I am skeptical of. Something about those "meteors" looked off to me.

At about 7:30 in the video, horrific sounds are heard. The people there are rightfully worried about landslides and flooding from 100 year record rains and failed dams. There are tens of thousands of aging dams in China, even the Three Gorges Dam is facing extreme problems.
