Stupid Automatic Transmission

I hate the fact that the automatic transmissions used in this game are completely fake!
They'd be better off actually making realistic transmissions suited to each car or model, and offering it as an option. And leave the automatic or manual question out of racing a car. How can a car be manual and/or automatic? THat's just fake.
The automatic shifts WAY too late, when the tach hits redline! FOr instance, it shifts at around frikin 7000 on an integra wen in real life the integra's auto shifts at around 4000.

I really hope they fix this problem in GT4.

You probably already know this, but in real life automatic transmissions shift at different times when under hard acceleration. For example; my brother has an AT. When he is crusing, it shifts pretty quickly, but when hes flooring it, it goes all the way up to 6500 rpm!

Yeah man it's all electronic. It takes the situation to know when to shift. Like Z06 said, when you floor it it'll go high but if you just give normal city throttle it'll only shift at about 3000 rpm.

Edit: Also, in GT2, it's not an automatic transmission, it just means the game shifts for you.

I always thought that the cars didn't change gears when they got to the red line in real life, either, because that would be tough on the engine. I guess in real life if you are using automatic transmission, it shifts earlier than the red line. But, video games can't be perfect, although they could fix this.

I use the auto option and i gotta disagree with you, they give equal starts in my experience compared to manual shifts. the advantage for manuals comes in when there are high hp cars taking off from the start eg speed 12

otherwise they really are about the same.

manual can be quicker in high powered cars coz you can just throw it into second and lauch from there saving one gear change, but arguably it's quicker to not break traction (although i'd like to see you try in the Speed 12 with a dual shock!) the auto and manual are the same. Manual is quicker racing because it lets you force certain gears while cornering which can be advantageous if you don't want to make a gear shift mid corner, it can also help drags by letting you hold gears past redline.

:D I rode the speed 12 at grindel with auto and DS. Beat my bro my 3 secs ( he used manual)

There is a trick to getting the auto to kick down on corner exit as one does a manual box. My racing style lends itself to mid corner shifting, but i usually get that done in the braking zone. Drags, i guess, go to the manual driver tho ;)

use manual! imo: better performance, and best of all - more fun! since when have you ever seen a true racing car wito an autobox? laf
If you ever watch F1 racing they use automatic gearboxes. :) :)

Oh good heavens.

The option isn't for an actual Automatic or Manual transmission installed in the car, but for whether the player wants to let the computer take half his problems from him. It's called "accessibility" - would you deny someone who isn't confident with gearchanges the use of this game?

In real life the Integra Type-R has NO Automatic gearbox option.

you are very mistaken m8
they use semi automatic boxes, basically they still switch gears (via paddles behind the steering wheel) but without having to declutch

This varies from car to car.

Also the ITR shouldn't be shifted much under redline - you'll find you go much slower that way. :)

You are very mistaken ef_civic, F1 cars did have fully auto gearboxes, now the're paddle only, but the technology is there, they're just not allowed to use it anymore

Without taking into account an adjustable gear box, manual is better because you can upshift a gear and maintain it, which is useful incases where the rpm of the gear the automatic would choose has too little or too much horsepower or torque. Sometimes 45 mph in 3rd gear is better than that speed in 2nd gear.

Actually, all you guys are wrong about the F1 cars. They use a senquncial (sp?) gear box, which slides each gear into place very fast and very smoothly without the use of a cluth. Look on the internet for pictures and compare that transmission to a normal auto transmission, you'll see that they are very different.

manual is better..

I disagree. They give equal performance in the hands of a good driver and experienced tuner. I use an auto and can do equally as fast times as the manual drivers i know.

yes never said it wasn't equally fast, but what's the fun to play a racing video game on automatic?!?

Different strokes for different folks. Fun is a function of the level of difficult in opponent faced and quickness of time (against the clock).

Use an "manual", be happy. I'll use an "auto", and be happy. The point is you cant validly criticise it cos you havent spend any substantial amount of time using it.

Maybe so. I played tennis for 3 years. Doesnt mean im any good at it. ;)

Tru different ppl appreciate diff styles of driving.

Speaking of which, using the manual on the controller feels like the paddle shifters on F1 cars and Ferrari cars. It's pretty cool, especially if you're driving a race car or an exotic car like Venturi(closest to a ferrari ya kno, so anti-Venturis dont b hating).

True is as true does

every one know the manual lets you rev higher so when your in 4 gear doing the 400m and your running high revs and automatic it changes and you finish. but if you have manual you can kepp it up there and not change gears

what is your best time for your beet car becasue i guarenteed it I beat it with manual

I dont waste my time on 400m and 1000m sprints. I prefer to race either 2P or time trial.
