Suggestions for going from AT to MT

Are you trying to mimic the behaviour of the automatic transmission -- trying to shift at the same time? Don't!!

The ONLY exception to this is in the driving school tests as I can't beat my AT time using MT in the very first acceleration test in the MX5. Weird! lol

Question about downshifting: is it ok if I downshift to desired gear before even braking? For example, car is driving 200kmh in 4th gear, I am about to enter the corner where it is recommended to pass it with 50 kmh in 2nd gear. What if I just downshift to 2nd gear while still driving 200 kmh, and after that I brake? Is there any gain / loss in doing that?

This won't work well. A part of braking is engine braking which will not happen (In GT Sport at least) if you shift down too early. This unsettles the car and also means you take longer to slow down.

In a real car you can down shift and 'over-rev' an engine - although it is VERY bad for the engine in the long term it can be used as a drifting technique etc. In GT Sport it simply doesn't engage the gear until you are going at an appropriate speed.

Give it a go, you'll learn pretty quickly why it's not ideal lol

Ok, so in GT Sport, downshifting early makes the car slow down slower. My friend was telling me to do this because he thought it would engine brake so altogether it would brake faster that way.

Kinda.

Downshifting too early will make the car slow down slower. Downshifting at the earliest mechanical point will make it slow down faster. If the top end of 2nd gear is 100kph then you want to down shift as soon as the car is going 100kph, that way the engine braking will have it's greatest affect.

Again it's all about practice and fine tuning, but usually the cars brake so fast that as soon as you jump on the brakes you can rattle down through the gears. Likewise if you play with the gear ratios in the tuning section then you'll have a feel for what the top speeds in each gear are.
