So, the local cable company has finally upgraded to a point where my 15-year-old modem doesn't cut it anymore. The cable company even sent out a letter stating that a DOCSIS 3.0 modem will be necessary for even the lowest package in order to access the maximum speeds. They upgraded to a 10mb/s on the economy package and Speedtest has never broken 5mb/s. I'm not sure if I'm being throttled or not, but me and other older hardware users noticed a sudden increase of buffering while streaming video just before the letter was sent out.
Whether it is a legitimate technical issue or not, I need to upgrade to get everything I pay for. I thought my hardware would die first, but apparently my Linksys was a good build. My choices are buy one or rent one from my ISP for $10 a month.
I went to buy one and realized I've been out of the loop. There are brands I've never heard of. Then I start seeing wireless routers and realize that mine is as older than my PS3. None of my wireless devices are newer than an iPhone 5, so its not technically necessary.
So the question is, can anyone suggest a good modem based on a price/quality balance?
And should I upgrade the whole network hardware or is my old Linksys WRT54g wireless router sufficient?
