Well, just got back from seeing the parents, and going to the LG/Eurosport Super Racing Weekend at Silverstone. Had a good day, here's the report:
Lamborghini Diablo Challenge: Series where a "gentleman" (i.e. amateur) and professional driver (or just the gent on his own) drive Lamborghini Diablo GTR/SVRs for about an hour, with a compulsory pit stop to allow for driver changes. The first few laps were good, but a lot of the field was knocked out early by accidents, and then it all got rather strung out. In all honesty, the standard of driving was pretty poor, with some shoddy throttle work and continually varying lines through the Bridge/Priory/Brooklands/Luffield complex.
2x British Formula Three: Slicks and wings formula that propelled Senna, Brundle, Button and Sato amongst others to F1 stardom. Again, early accidents marred the action, and the leaders were exemplary in their driving skills, leading to dullness up-front, but towards the back of the pack there was excitement and passing a-plenty. Good races.
British GTs: Another one hour race, the BGT championship will go down to either the Lister Storm or the Saleen S7, with a few victories to the Cerbera Speed 12. Certainly, the Cerbera led for a long time as the Saleen (starting from the back) came through the field. Christ, that's a quick car! It monstered everything, and as the Lister dropped back, the fight was between the Saleen and the TVR. After the stops, the Cerbera seemed to slow for a while, and the Saleen got into the lead, and managed the gap. The Lister, which had looked ordinary, got going towards the end, and nearly caught the TVR, the first three finishing only 15secs apart. A great, interesting, race.
2x European Touring Car Championships: Alfas dominated both rounds, as the BMWs and the Volvos fought it out for the scraps. One-twos for Giovanardi and Larini were only of limited interest (the Alfas are so much faster than the other cars). The Volvo of Rydell led for a while, but was blown away when it was caught by the Alfas, and the BMWs looked great but were slow. Not great racing.
And to finish it all, a second-rate digital photo of a Speed 12 shall be attached. I'll have some scanned print photos soon!
