Super Unofficial DiRT 4 Thread (PS4/XB1/PC)

Really enjoying the game so far! Been switching between gamer and sim handling (assist off apart from ABS) but I think I'll stick with Gamer in the long run as it gives me that sense of speed I miss from DiRT 2 & 3.

Did a rally stage yesterday where Nicky suddenly warned about a hazard and then we went by a stricken Evo on the side of the road with smoke pouring out.

I noticed this too, in my case it was a totalled WRX STI. Really nice touch there by CM! 👍👍

I may have killed a group groups of spectators during today's Group B event. :ill:

Adjusted this line so you can get an idea of my experience in today's DiRT Daily. I took the challenge in Sim mode and I was NOT prepared for how frisky the 205 was.

I was a little put off by the graphics (PS4) initially - asking myself if Dirt Rally really had those same cardboard cutout trees and overall somewhat poor modeling except for the cars.
For comparison I just played a few stages of Dirt Rally (first time in a few months) and I'd say that Dirt 4 probably has the edge by virtue of better lighting.

As far as handling goes (Thrustmaster T150, only tried sim with all aids off except low ABS) I'm not qualified to determine which is more realistic, but running the same cars on the same surfaces in DR and D4 I think I'm partial to D4. A bit more weighty and grippy.

I've seem some excellent stages in D4 (I typically have complexity set somewhere in the middle on the generator, never been a fan of overly technical tracks) and the procedural generation will surely give the game a lot of extra longevity.
Two things I miss are mountain side views (and is my memory too rosy or did Dirt 2 and 3 have more interesting scenery by far, through desert mesas, villages and other natural and man made structures that went beyond merely twisty, narrow roads through forests and fields?) and ascents/descents that go above the I think 150 meters or so max I've seen in D4 in any of the five locations.

Over all though, Dirt 4 is definitely a highly recommended purchase.

I've passed broken cars in rally and rallycross, it is a nice addition.

Just started up on my G29 wheel in Sim handling and it's already pretty mental. Even driving the slow R2 cars is quite a workout. So far D4 is looking like a return to form as I haven't played a DiRT game since D2.

Hi Folks,

Just a quick question, do some liveries have to be unlocked? I can't seem to find the 555 livery for the 1995 Subaru and also the official WRC livery for the 2001 Subaru. I know they are both in the game, can they not be chosen until you have bought the car?

Had a long session of just free running. As I expected, I'm not much cop at the actual rallies. I'm not in Dirt Rally, I'm not in CMR3 which I still have. Obviously though the slowest stuff is easiest so I've handled that best. And I do like the fact a virtually stock Peugeot 205 GTI has snuck in. Whilst Your Stage is alright, I have my doubts about it. I just wish they'd taken it even further. And I'd quite like more roadside atmosphere. That'd really make it feel like my kind of rallying. Also, Nicky Grist being your co-driver again is just perfect... Shame he sounds a little worn-down these days. CMR3 had what he sounds like in my mind, absolutely.

The Landrush stuff looks pretty solid. I didn't quite get the Stadium Trucks down, but I had some great fun with the buggies. They'll be something I'll look to try in career quickly. I'm no good with the Cross Karts at all, though.

But my favourite time was with the rallycross. I had a great blast taking the S1600s round Lydden Hill, an even better time with the Lites, but most of all I had a wonderful experience in the Supercars in Hell. I'll get onto that as soon as I can in career, that's for sure.

I'm pretty sure I unlocked a livery for some random car one of the previous times I ranked up, although my attention was drifting elsewhere so I won't say it with certainty.

Anyone else having issues with freezing or not loading? I am trying to do the australia challenge The 4th stage never loads or it locks up there. I am currently redownloading and installing the game in case it was a bad install etc

No, I think you're right about this. That's the benefit of stages that 1) aren't real and 2) aren't procedurally generated

Landrush is horrible. Seriously. It's a waste of time for the player and effort from Codemasters. It's one of the worst gameplay experiences I have ever had, which is all the more disappointing given that the rest of the game is so good.

The Kadett is a complete dog to drive, extremely understeery. The Alpine wants to kill you everytime you release the throttle. I did manage to dial most of that out with stiffer front springs though.

For me, the best example of how truly great D4 can be is the M3 in Dirtfish. That is just pure joy!
The Kadett's default stability is an asset if you accommodate it, but the next time I drive it I'm going to see if I can tune it to be more neutral. The M3 was the first car I bought for my team, but I didn't get around to giving it a proper run until today. It's the most authentic-feeling car I've driven yet. 👍

OK I've had a few hours with it and while I'm not ready yet to give a detailed verdict I will say.

I like the expanded repair, team and tuning options.

I like the your stage tool, it's thrown up some nice stages for me so far.

Graphics have taken a step back, while sound has taken a step forward. However if the former was needed to get your stage working I can more than live with it.

Physics are fun and enjoyable, but don't yet strike me as a step forward over DR, more a tweaking around the edges. SLRE still has the edge over it in that regard. That's with simulation on and all aids off.

The broken down cars, dust from chopper and so on are all nice to see, even if they are late to the party on this (the WRC series, under various devs have had this for years).

Overall good fun so far.

Damn, you summed up my upcoming review in a few sentences!

Yeah, I can't agree with this enough. Your Stage has clearly tanked the graphics, Michigan looks awful in regular sun light.

Land Rush runs terrible on the OG PS4. :(

The inclusion of Spain and Australia is a great addition - i think 'gamer' handling is very playable and feels about right to me - i simply havnt the time to start mastering 'sim' handling. You still have the feeling of one wrong move and your stage is over on 'gamer'. The old Seat felt great on the Spanish tarmac, awesome handling on that thing.

Having your own team, staff etc. has made me love Rally mode again, you actually care about your own car and what damage it has taken.

PS4 runs land rush without any major issues, my biggest problem with it is that the lack of content for it makes it a waste of the time taken to model the cars and tracks.

I would rather of had an additional location and a few more rally spec cars.

SLRE again has D4 beat when it comes to the car list.

Yeah Land Rush and Rally X (though less so) are clearly just asides. Don't think they should look so relevant in the career menus.

I have had the cars at the side of the road but has anyone else had this happen? looks like a camera chopper got a bit too close. I lost a good few seconds to this.

Yes the car is in there somewhere lol

Yes I've had it multiple times right before a hairpin or acute turns. Every single time I had to slow down because I couldn't see the turn. I hate it.

Landrush mode is very wishy washy - could be a mode in any offroad game out there, its missing the glitz & atmosphere it had in Dirt 2 imo.

What ruins Landrush for me is the fact the few tracks in the game are rather unimaginative and get boring fast.

I haven't reached Rallycross yet, but hopefully the tracks are a little more interesting.

Not to mention the twitchy handling and the way that the slightest contact spins you out (but the AI is usually fine). The buggies are manageable if you back off over the jumps, but the crosskarts are ridiculous.

Sounds like you're having a better experience than me. Anytime I try and take an actual racing line they just plough through and carry on their merry way - bringing the FPS down in the process.
