The deal hasn't even been finalised yet and people are getting all doomsday about it!

We don't know anything about the terms, what CM have agreed to or who will be publishing their games. People just automatically assuming we'll get a MT filled F1 2K22 are getting way ahead of themselves.

Yeah right. I’ve seen more than enough bs over the years by companies like Take Two, EA and Activision, so my expectations are very low.

I came here to read some of the posts and it's exactly what I expected. RIP whatever's left of CM.

Expectation is earned through past history of actions or inactions. And the current "AAA" industry's actions have been, well let's just say, less than moral or even acceptable. MTX filled casino based games with sprinkles of whatever the original game was supposed to be is the norm with them, and they've been pushing to normalize these things even further.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past decade or so, you honestly can not expect anything good to come out of this as things stand right now. The low expectation is well justified in this instance if you ask me. Being bought out by EA, ActiBliz, and T2 are just death sentences these days.

But one can dream, right?

Considering that the F1 games are already 80% of the way there in terms of implementation of micro-transactions, and as has been pointed out and shown that FOM, and Liberty Media as owners, don't give a **** about where the money comes from, as long as its green and the money comes on time, why *wouldn't* people consider this viewpoint the logical end game?

It should be noted what happened to various 2K sports franchises in the past decade once Take Two took total control:

NBA 2K: Once 2K was established as the definitive basketball game (admittedly, it is still a well designed and very good game of basketball, and it benefited from legendarily bad outings from EA with NBA Live/Elite before going away) that's when they began to hammer down the micro-transactions to the point where they have it now.

WWE 2K: Admittedly, WWE games have been tire fires for years even before 2K bought into it, and Yukes has been universally reviled as a wrestling game developer for literal decades by this point, but once T2 took total control of the series, the micro-transactions were shoved hard into the game and the ability to create (a pretty big point of pride for most wrestling games) was neutered, and the legendarily laissez-faire attitude towards gameplay and especially bugs was ignored to the point where the last game was literally canned because it was in such an unplayable state that 2K had egg on their face.

PGA 2K: Admittedly, this one is early, considering that 2K only just bought into the game. But it's certainly coming. PGA 2K21 is really an anomaly when it comes to having no micro transactions considering it's still ultimate another The Golf Club game at it's heart, except with more and better branding, but it's pretty much a guarantee that will change in the next few years as 2K takes more control.

And in all these situations, none of the rights holders has really given a **** about how their licenses have been wrapped up in predatory micro-transaction practices. The NBA certainly hasn't, the PGA certainly won't care, and the WWE has historically never cared about the quality of their games going on decades by this point, but the past few years under 2K's stewardship of Yukes has been especially galling. To say that people are 'way ahead of themselves' for pointing out the obvious (and what has historically happened in the past few years since Take Two has especially cornered the sports market) is kind of snitching on yourself, no?

MXH
True, but minus the MTX galore.

:P

Well, announcing season pass before the game is even released, and recycling content from previous games as the DLC is as bad as MTX in my book.

Also, have you seen the DLCs for F1 2019? There are 112 items, and most of them are $1-3 useless visual items like gloves/liveries :yuck:

Anyway, whatever happens, I'm glad to have lived through the golden years of Codemasters. From PS1 TOCA/CMR to PS3 GRID/DIRT era, nothing will take away those memories :)

I'm okay with DLC like that since it's useless and I'll probably never buy items like that.

Slightly Mad Studios probably now regretting the deal to be bought by Codemasters.

I doubt it considering they had 2 flops shortly after that sale was finalized. Had they not done that deal their value would have plummeted and possibly even bankrupt them.

Neither do I, but not all people have that level of self control or judgement. It's just predatory sales tactics and has no place in a AAA game. F2P mobile titles, I can understand. But for a fully fledged title it's just looks bad...

Cosmetics are also a good model for what I call "buy to play" online-only games, like an MMORPG, in place of a typical subscription fee. It is no less predatory (same for F2P/mobile Skinner boxes), but for the rest of us, it sure beats paying for a subscription.

But then there came a twist.

A gaming industry source said this weekend that EA was working with bankers at UBS on its offer.

The interest from EA, which has a market value of almost $40bn (£30bn), is likely to be disclosed to the stock market on Monday morning.

Oh, the utter **** fits Ian Bell must be having after learning of this. When he threw EA under the bus after PCARS 2 dropped and represented a precipitous downward trend of SMS as a studio, people finally realizing how much of a cantankerous asshole he is and a Peter Molyneux type liar and fraud, to be potentially shacked up with EA again.

If EA indeed goes forward with this, watch as Grid, Dirt, and PCARS inevitably get folded and put under the NFS mold. As if NFS hasn’t already had a bad enough identity crisis as Heat showed...

And don’t get me started with F1 and eventually WRC Ultimate Team. Can’t imagine EA F1 to be too much like F1 Challenge 99-02.

On the bright side... maybe... just maybe a Shox revival under the Dirt name?

Whatever happens from either Take-Two or EA, we're all gonna lose in the end given both publishers are majorly shady with their anti-consumer business practices

I can't wait for EA to buy Codemasters, have them release two or three games that people adore, then have EA do something that makes everyone hates the next game before it even comes out so it sells slightly below EA's internal projections and EA shuts the studio down.

If most of Codemasters/SMS' staff haven't been poached reassigned to other franchises by this time next year, I'll have to commend EA for their amazing show of restraint. It's pretty clear that they're interested in buying resources, not a game studio.
