Page 2: Detour
Seeing that I am struggling in driving on ice, Toru proposed an idea that he believes can help me get through with it.
We're going to meet a woman, who can teach me some tricks, Toru said. But why on tarmac?
Anyhow, with Stephan's blessing, we'll go through with it if it means increasing our chances of winning.
Two days later, Toru and I head to Paris. However upon arriving there, he got a call from that woman again, changing our meeting place to a suburb. It's not that far, thankfully. Plus, this Citroen Berlingo van I'm driving is one of the best. Buy one, if I were you.
Who is that woman, anyway? And silly me, I didn't bother to ask about that.
Louis: "May I ask who that woman is?"
Toru: "She says she wants to introduce to you personally."
Huh... a special request, huh?
Louis: "I'm assuming she's Japanese, the way you talk to her over the phone."
Toru: "Yes. She and her drifting team are in Europe for the global drifting tournament. Since they're on a break, she's willing to help us out."
Drifting, huh? So I'm assuming she's going to teach me that. I don't really get it. Why get so excited in seeing a cloud of smoke and cars going sideways slowly? Isn't oversteer a bad thing?
We arrived at the spot 20 minutes later. It's an arena, huh? Quite big. I'm only hearing revving engines, and none of the crowd cheers. Perhaps it's a practice.
What I first saw upon entering? This.

Louis: "I'm going to be honest. Are you sure this is a good idea? I don't want disturbing other people."
Toru: "We won't be here if she doesn't like to meet us. Plus, this is the only technique for you to play around on ice!"
Louis: "First, I do know how to combat oversteer, when the rear starts to hang out. Apply opposite lock and feather the throttle if possible."
Toru: "But in rallying, you actually
need to oversteer, if you want the car to turn."
We watch that Nissan perform a long drift. So there is grace beneath that cloud of smoke after all.
And it keeps on going sideways...
Still sideways. Normally, a race car driver would end a slide immediately in order to recover in corner exit.
Man... when will that stop? It's like a crab. I never even drifted as a street racer in Redview!
Oops... I jinxed it. That stealthy Nissan sports car did stop. Coming out of the car is woman with a figure. She's coming this way.
Juri: "Ooh... hisashiburi, Toru-chan."
(It's been a while, Toru.)
And her tone of her voice is sensual. Plus her clothing looks the part as well.
Toru: "Toru-chan ja nai yo! Otoko ni natta yo!"
(It's not Toru-chan! I'm a grown man!)
After that brief bickering, the woman proceeds to stare at me. She then looks down first, then up to my face.
Juri: "Omae no tomodachi? Furansujin mo sei ga takai to omowanakatta. Kawaii sou da na. Oishii darou?
(Your friend? I never thought the French can be tall too. He's cute, actually. Is he delicious?)
Toru: "Zen otoko wa tabemono darou? Kowai da ze."
(Are all men your food? You're scary)
Juri: "Hey you. Your stare means something. What's your name?"
Louis: "Louis Montagny. Pleasure to meet you."
Juri: "First of all, what's with you French for messing up pronunciation of names? Like you say "Louis" as "Louie". But hey, I don't intend learning your language anyway."
Now she's getting... too close to me. Her body gestures are too suggestive, as she goes around inspecting me. Okay... this is getting uncomfortable, now her finger is on my chin, as she looks straight up to my face very closely.
Juri: "You're something I can sink my teeth into. Interesting."
She then puts her tongue out, slithering around her lips. What are you trying to imply, woman?"
Juri: "Oh, almost forgot. My name is Juri Takeuchi. That name will forever be in your head, big boy. You can come at me anytime you want. I'm ready..."
Hey, I'm not here for something erotic.
Juri: "Toru-chan, kare ni oshiete ageru? Sore kara, tanoshii da yo!
(Toru-chan, I'm going to teach him? If that's the case, then this will be fun!)
Toru: "Haiii, hai... Rallying wo kachitai kara.
(Yes yes. We want to win rallying, that's why.)
Juri: "Sore jaa... nakama no kuruma wo kariru. Matte ne."
(Okay then. I'll just borrow a teammate's car. Just wait.)
That woman then heads to her teammates, talking to them. What's the deal with her?
Toru: "Sorry about that awkward introduction. She can be like that, but she's a great drifter."
She then calls us out. Upon seeing an array of cars presumably tuned for drifting, she shows a car that we can use, and Toru gives me the key.
Juri: "We're going to have a rough ride. Hehehehehehe... just kidding! You will take the wheel. I'll be the passenger."
Louis: "Got it."
I then take off my jacket, leaving my sleveless undershirt on. You know, I can be worked up so much when I'm doing something for the very first time.
Juri: "Oooooh... such biceps. Looks like I'm going to extend my stay here in France for a while. You've got nice cuts, big boy. Mind if I have some?"
Huh? Now this is getting creepy.
Toru: "Uhhhh... can't you just two get this over with?"
Louis: "Don't worry about it, Toru. I'll be fine."
So we head out. I'm trying not to look at Juri as much as I can. Another eye contact and she might take off my clothes.
Juri: "So big boy, you haven't done drifting at all?"
Louis: "None at all. But I do catch a car's oversteer on corner exit."
Juri: "That's very typical for a precision race car driver. But in drifting or rallying, you need to lose yourself and your car. Just like me... I always lose myself and go wild.
Okay, first off, accelerate immediately as you turn on that next corner. That will start the slide."
Doing so can induce the car to oversteer. That's something race car drivers try to avoid, as they always "feather" the throttle.
Without further excuses, I followed her instruction. Full throttle on steering...
...and here I go.
Great... I spun on the first try.
Juri: "First-timers always mess up. It's a fact. But hey, I get to spend so much time with you. This is going to be... fun."
There she goes again, with her erotic expletives. But I have no choice if I aim to win in Chamonix! Looks like I'm going to have to bear with her for a little while.
