The 2018 US Mid-Term Elections Thread

Half full/half empty perhaps.

However in law it does decide who is violating the law. Something like people arent allowed to murder vs people arent allowed to be murdered.
The point is that the sale of an article isn't permitted but for certain requirements having been met. Law in this circumstance works to penalize the party found to be in violation first, and for a consumer to illegally purchase an article, a retailer must first offer it for sale. Since such articles aren't likely to be locked up during hours it isn't permissible to sell them (except for locations where this is required), they must simply refuse the sale until certain requirements have been met.

But in the case of underaged drinking arent both penalized?

Illegal consumption of alcohol isn't really a thing here. It's illegal to sell it except for certain requirements having been met, be they those pertaining to location, time or age of the parties involved.

Edit: For what it's worth, blue laws presumably just passed in Georgia have been in effect here for quite some time now. Frankly it has never been an issue for me, except for running out of it at Christmas parties and not being able to restock.

Seems like I voted for another stupid Georgia law. The "Mimosa"law.

Come on man... God forbid we can have a beer before the bible thumping idiots get out of church...

Jesus, even Utah isn't that bad. I can buy semi-real beer at the grocery store anytime after 7 am. Also, I think I can order it at a restaurant starting at 10 on a Sunday.

Bars and restaurants are more relaxed.

@ryzno It seems the midterm in georgia for the governer seat is still not decided. What is you opinion on it, being a native you have the best perspective on it.
It's hard to say. He does currently have over 50%, his office says the remaining ballots(military etc...) couldn't trigger a recount or runoff. He has stepped down from his seat to allow someone not involved to certify the election and has officially begun the transition process. I believe we are still waiting for every ballot to be counted though.
Disclaimer* I don't know what has happened since Friday.

He's at 50.2% last time I checked and a couple of legal deadlines are looming for counting votes. That won't satisfy the Democrats though and expect them to follow a lawsuit to challenge the results even if they don't reach the threshold for an automatic recount in time.

I'm not sure how familiar you all are with the 'butterfly' ballot and the 'vote every page' ballots from Florida in 2000 during the presidential race, but Broward County's 2018 mid term ballots demonstrate similar degrees of design incompetency.

Butterfly Ballot (2000) caused likely 2,000+ votes intended for Gore to be made as votes for Pat Buchanan, based on studies. The race (and the presidency was decided by less than 1,000 votes )

Broward County 2018 Ballot. Very awful design by locating the senate race beneath the instructions. Some districts in Broward county (IIRC) did not have a house race which made the senate race less noticeable. Had I missed it if I were in Broward county? I'd like to think probably not, but apparently 26,000 people voted for Governor and not Senate in Broward.

Moral of the story: Design matters.

They should do what TX does in a majority of its counties and use machines. Would be far faster to count votes and wouldn’t spark controversy and incompetency claims by both sides.

Something. Maybe there needs to be a ballot review process? I'd imagine this ballot would have been flagged if more than a handful of people looked at it.

I think we should try the Swiss system of direct democracy. Put those arenas and stadiums built in part with public funds to good use once every 2 years:sly:

Caveat: Half joking.

There shouldnt be a limit to counting votes. All votes should be counter correctly. If the winner is democrat or conservative is irrelevant.

Sounds very altruistic but there are already laws in place that govern how and when votes are counted.

For me as an outsider they do seem all over the place. How come the elections in Georgia and Florida take more time and are so controversial. How is it possible the one that oversees the election can be a candidate at the same time? I have only read about misconduct concerning the voting machines not being prepared and voterpurging in georgia. Is it the media being selective or does it happen throughout the USA?

There is no standardized system throughout the US. Different states are able to control their own elections to a significant degree - which has made elections open to all sorts of possible abuse. The party in power at the state level can control the process to a significant degree, which is why control of state legislatures & governorships has consequences for nationwide elections.

Eh, we just had another story about machines automatically switching votes to Republican which caused concern again.

Although folks ended up missing the conclusion to that story where people weren't actually reviewing who they voted for, and it was user-error, not machine.

The only complaint about these machines is how it looks like I'm using Windows 95 to vote. This can be easily fixed with counties offering more money to upgrade them.

There's a lot to be said for paper ballots.

Yeah, what was wrong with pen and paper apart from the time it takes to count them? Every method is subject to potential rigging (ballot stuffing) and manipulation (fraudulent software) but the simplest method seems to be the best.

I have a serious aversion to machines like that, especially touchscreens.

So anyone can put the incorrect date of birth or no date of birth and vote but my dad can't vote cause his license is expired. Screw you Dems! I bet they would've let him vote if he told them he was gonna vote Dem.

This my friends is your voter suppression. Delays and delays to count fraudulent votes.

I don't understand. This story says that Gwinnett voters were being suppressed by the GOP candidate, not the Democrats.

Which is BS. All his office does is certify the votes after the counties submit them. MSM is trying to blow smoke nationally. Abrams team have been fighting in the courts and delaying the counts to get these votes counted.
Everything was supposed to be certified yesterday now it's Friday. They keep "finding" more votes to count. This is the same BS going on in Florida right now.

The official website for Georgia's Secretary of State disagrees:

WHAT IDS ARE ACCEPTABLE?
  • Any valid state or federal government issued photo ID, including a free ID Card issued by your county registrar's office or the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS)
  • A Georgia Driver's License, even if expired
  • Valid employee photo ID from any branch, department, agency, or entity of the U.S. Government, Georgia, or any county, municipality, board, authority or other entity of this state
  • Valid U.S. passport ID
  • Valid U.S. military photo ID
  • Valid tribal photo ID
Bring one of these six forms of identification to vote.
So...yeah.

Screw you Dems! I bet they would've let him vote if he told them he was gonna vote Dem.
:odd:

Did he...did he tell them he wasn't gonna vote Dem? Why?

He should've they probably would've let him vote. I didn't know that either, that said he couldn't have voted out here since we moved. I would've had to drive 45 minutes to take him to our old precinct. He can't change his address or renew it cause NY wants over $200 for a copy of his birth certificate.
