BTW - what's the camera like?

Its still 2.0 MP, still a pretty good camera for the phone. Its not an 8.0 MP unit like you'd find in Japan, but for most people, it'll get the job done.

===

Per pricing, I really wouldn't expect it to be any higher than £99, but it seems pretty fair that you'd have a pretty big contract to go with it. They killed the pay-as-you-go plans here in the US on the iPhone, I imagine they'll do the same internationally.

See... THIS is what those Southwest airlines Commercials should be like.

*Ding* Wanna get away!?

Wow, what an idoit. I can't believe the media is wasting time covering things like this and asking people those kinds of questions.

I really want an I phone but they have sold out near me :(

but its payday tomorrow so I may just go get one if I can.

It'll finally be released over here around Christmas. If they really sell it for U$199 (which I doubt) I might get one and at last retire my brave Sony Ericsson W800.

More affordable? More affordable my ass!

$80NZ per month for the 250MB plan, $130NZ for the 500.

And if you want the iPhone for the magic $199NZ price it's $250NZ PER MONTH. That equates to ~$6000 over the course of the two-year plan.

Needless to say, Vodafone NZ's getting all sorts of insults thrown at it by all manner of irate potential iPhone-buyers.

In other news: it didn't take long for WillItBlend to get their mitts on a 3G - http://www.willitblend.com/videos.aspx?type=unsafe&video=iphone3g

It's an absolutely gorgeous phone, but it's not great enough for me to give into Rogers horrid plans here in Canada. There's no way I can my $45 voice plan + $30 for 6GB data to own an iPhone.

It's definitely a must have toy like all of Apple's products, but sadly I'll have to pass on this one.

I'm at a loss to why all of you folks outside the United States are getting screwed with your voice and data plans on the phone. I've heard that Apple isn't happy with Rogers up in Canada, but it really sounds bad elsewhere as well. At least in the US their rates are competitive with others, if anything, cheaper in the end...

I don't know what you consider "cheap", but $70+ a month for a phone is NOT cheap to me... I mean yeah, I'll like to have access to the net anywhere, but it ain't THAT important. Not to mention if you can't get a [censored] signal it's pretty worthless in the first place.

Here in the UK the mobile network O2 is the only one selling the iphone and the plans available are really way too expensive. I wish all networks could offer it to drive prices down because right now its a monopoly.

O2 are laughing all the way to the bank anyway because they are sold out for like a month!

The cheapest plan is $198 for the phone and $60 per month for 18 months, unlimited data but a poxy 75 mins and 125 texts!

In the future they will be offering it on pay as you go but thats really pointless because you will never freely use all of its features!

Robin

O2 have a special PAYG bolt on for unlimited data (£10 a month) for the normal iPhone now. That's what I'll be doing once my current contract ends (or I could just renew it and upgrade to the 3G).

iPhone 3G (AT&T):

- $199 Phone
- 24 Month Contract ~ $70 per month
- 450 talk minutes, free after 7PM with rollover (keep the minutes you don't use)
- 300 texts (I think... It may have changed)
- Unlimited Data plan

Samsung Instinct (Sprint):

- $129 phone
- 24 month contract ~ $70 per month
- 450 talk minutes, free after 7 PM, no rollover
- Unlimited texts
- Unlimited 3G data ~ no WiFi

All of the carriers increased their data plans unfortunately. Sprint was at $15 for some time on their data plans, but that has gone up steadily.

... and Sprint is terrible.

edit:

Anyway, I just updated my phone to 2.0. Wow! This new software makes it a whole new phone. The apps are incredible. I finally have radio on my phone. I'm kind of bummed that I still can't get SomaFM web radio, which has some incredible commercial-free stations. AOL Radio and Pandora work out well enough, though AOL sucks because it has commercials and Pandora is limited in that I can only listen to artists that I know and artists that are similar to them.

There's also some other cool apps like language phrase audio databases. I got the free Mandarin one and another Spanish one. I kind of wish the Japanese one was free instead of the Mandarin Chinese, but, hey, now I get to learn some Mandarin too (or at least have a little Chinese guy announce phrases to me). I bet the TopGear boys wish they had iPhones for their little Japanese excursion. :D

Also, PhoneSaber FTW. One step closer to a dream come true.

Someone came into work today, and asked me if I could connect his iPhone to our Universities Wireless Network, however, I could not find where to configure (or select) the PEAP and EAP-MSCHAPv2 settings. Any ideas?

I am assuming those are related to VPN stuff... you can find the menus for VPN related things under Settings > General > Network > VPN > Settings

Apple basically hide the VPN setup away, though once enabled, they gave it a nice quick toggle button. I am not sure about firmware 2.0, but in the 1.1.x series, it does disconnect the VPN when the iPod goes into sleep mode, which is bothersome.

Let me know if that info helps - if not I can probably look around the community a bit.

Looks like I'm switching. Which sucks since I just bought a Glyde on launch day for $340 out the door. Verizon is raping me for $160 early termination too, and that's just a single line on a family plan. But at least I know somebody who will give me at least $200 for the Glyde. I hope to be able to switch over to AT&T in around a month with a black 16GB model. I've read an article that the white ones develop hairline cracks, unfortunately.

By the way YSSMAN, AT&T's plan is 450 anytime minutes, 5000 night and weekend. Not "unlimited", but it may as well be.

Ah, I see. I clicked through some of the fine details on the AT&T stuff and it just seems "fuzzy" the way in which they charge for services. Not that you can complain much, the iPhone is still the pinnacle of smart phone gear...

I still haven't decided if I'll go over in December. The Blackberry case is convincing if Sprint will give me one for free, or, if they manage to patch the hell out of the Instinct where they FINALLY fix the damn browser. We'll see. If I get a job at AT&T I'm sure I stand a decent chance of getting a free iPhone anyway...

How does the Instinct compare to the Glyde? I'd imagine their touch works the same? Nothing that I've used is anywhere close to the same league as the iPhone/iPod Touch in how well it recognizes an input. Sure, the Glyde works fine for what features it has. I don't have a data plan since Verizon charges way too much, so the only things that requires more than taps would be the browser and scrolling through pictures, texts, etc. I've actually found scrolling to be a pain since it likes to select things when you scroll, jump around randomly, etc.

So why is it that nobody else knows how to make a good touchscreen and Apple blows everyone away on their first try? :irked:

I've heard that people hate the Instinct, and I've heard that people love it. Considering its the only phone on Sprint that'll be able to compete against the iPhone until the Blackberry Thunder shows up, well, you take what you can get. I know the screen has a tactile feedback system for when you press the buttons, but the problem is mostly that the phone just doesn't do everything in the most-logical way like Apple.

I personally haven't used either the Glyde or Instinct for large amounts of time, but between the two, I'd prefer the Instinct by a mile. The thing is, I'm just waiting for all of the updates on the Instinct before buying into it.

For one thing... I thought the Glyde's screen was smaller than the Instinct. Kinda defeats the purpose of these "touch" screen phones if you ask me.

Anyway, I caved and started using my LG Rumor to check my email. It didn't go that badly actually. As for the charges will have to see...

Yeah, it is relatively small. But having the QWERTY keyboard makes it okay since you aren't typing on the screen. For how the Glyde works, the screen size is fine 80% of the time.

But its no iPhone.

I'm not saying it's an iPhone nor have I compared it to an iPhone. Comparing them or saying they are "iphone killers" is kinda stupid especially if an Apple tOOl is the one making the Thread.(nobody in particular) Anyway, I'm not talking about the keyboard really. I'm talking about browsing the web.

Oh, I wasn't meaning that last line towards anybody. After all, I'm the one planning on ditching the Glyde in favor of the iPhone. Web use was definitely considered part of the 20% where the Glyde's screen is likely insufficient (Verizon's data is too expensive so I haven't used it). Also, any time it is open (i.e. the screen displays horizontally) there really isn't enough real estate to use menus well.

Could be fake.... just a vid with the guy doing the movements..... also how would he be braking... its got to be fake.

I'm going to call Shenanigans on that one...

People keep looking for the iPhone killer, and I know a lot of people (including myself) are under the assumption that when Google throws their hat into the ring, it'll be the beginning of the end. With the first release of the Android SDK on some of the HTC touch phones, its safe to say that Google could have the first shot at killing the iPhone with the proper hardware.

The software looks impressive, but the key is going to be the hardware too. I'm not a huge fan of HTC products, but if they can push something like this package out for $200-250 with a two-year contract on non-AT&T services here in the US, they'll likely sell a bazillion of them. Word is that T-Mobile will be the first to get it, no word on who comes after it. I'm not sure if Sprint would cannibalize the Instinct with it (my thoughts are they should, and probably will), and Verizon seems like the most-logical choice to truly fight the iPhone.

The good news is that the software will work on not just touch phones, but regular flip models too. Any kid of Google setup should be great, but as always, the hardware is going to have to be sorted out first.
