Wow some guy accidentally got sent an prototype iPhone 6 from Verizon. It's on eBay and the bidding is currently over $100,000!

Cnet
Like millions of other people, Alex Kantor, a technology fan who works with a mobile company, decided he would upgrade to a new iPhone 6. Unlike millions of other people, Kantor has a very unusual story to go along with his new smartphone. He says he ordered his upgrade through Verizon. When it arrived, it appeared to be a phone running in developer mode. He believed he had a prototype in his hands, so he decided to test other consumers' interest by placing it on eBay.

"I determined that this iPhone was a version not meant for the consumer market after seeing the software version on it. I am an avid tech lover and I knew what this software was right away. It is actually called SwitchBoard and is only for internal Apple testing," Kantor tells CNET. "Also, there is no FCC markings on the rear of the device or model number. Also, there is a red charging port which is known on prototypes."

I don't know how a developer model could end up in the supply chain. If it is a prototype Apple will likely demand it back because it is their property but then you get into a grey area of who owns it.

Just got my 6. I haven't used it much yet so can't tell you much. It feels weighty and quality like most previous phones and the screen is amazing. As it's the same software there probably won't be many other differences. It'll be a while before I fully test the camera.

Well since he said it was given to him by Verizon, they own it and since he is still paying off the phone they can request it back.

Pretty sure that isn't how contracts work up here, given the early termination fee aspect in upgrade situations.

So in a few hours the Apple Watch is fully unveiled. It could go either way, sending Apple to become the worlds first 1 Trillion Dollar company or not really make much of an impact.

I'm pretty sure it's going to sell like hot cakes because of the Apple cult, anyone who owns an iPhone will very likely pick one up like its obligatory.

I do think it looks nice if not slightly too thick. If it worked with Andriod (when Silicon Valley freezes over) I might consider one because I'm looking for a Smart watch with fitness functions. The MS Band is tempting and the best featured but it really needs a 2nd or 3rd generation to solve the numerous issues.

Looks too gaudy. Moto g has a better design.

Hope Apple simplifies it on par with Ipods for the next illiteration.

I'm an Apple nut but I won't be buying the Apple Watch. Personally I prefer the Pebble. I also don't see how the watch will fit into my lifestyle, I'm not huge into fitness, I'm at work where I can't have my mobile phone out so having a watch will be a no and Apple Pay isn't in the UK yet.

I'm personally interested in other things from Apple like a new ATV or the larger pro iPad.

Very interested by how things pan out over the next few months. I've supported apple (by buying their products) since the original iPhone but I've recently been looking at buying Surface Pro 3 (or 4 when it's announced) as my Mac Pro Retina has been causing a few issues at work recently. I dual boot Windows and OS X using Parallels but recent updates to the windows based software we use at work has caused problems. I also need a new iPad as haven't updated in three or so years and the current iPad is starting to show its age. Thats why the Surface Pro 3 is so appealing. And if I go that route I would probably switch to Windows Phone as well.

So I'm interested to see how the Apple Watch fairs and news on the iPad Pro as that will shape the route I take in the future.

Worst thing, the whole Fitness thing in Apple Watch is scrapped. (Sensor, software) They said it wasnt complete enough and they shift the marketing towards, im kid you not, "fashionable and executive lifestyle".

Yeh I read that. The fitness thing was never a huge selling point for me so its removal won't have any great impact. I think for Apple to recover from that (especially removing these features so close to launch) they will need to put some must have feature into it to keep potential buyers who may now be looking elsewhere.

iPhone users will be looking to extend the features of thier phones and possibly iPads / Macs. How Apple will do this beyond the ideas of a glorified pedometer and pulse monitor will be interesting.

I'm hoping for iOS major update and Apple TV iPad updates.

Well it looks like all the health and sports stuff has been kept. But 10,000 for the exclusive version of the watch, that is totally mental!

Still not too fussed about the watch but I love the look of the new MacBook. Already owning a MBP I'm not fussed about buying one but I love the design choices.

The fitness stuff looks to be mostly there though.

Pricing for the model I would be interested in (stainless steel w/Milanese strap) is pretty much in line with a Tissot Visodate Milanais. I'd rather have the proper watch though. But the sport edition looks nice as well - probably the sweet spot considering we still see smartwatches as gadgets. The exclusive versions, bloody hell. Collector's items for sure, again, I'd rather have a proper watch, and £10-12K gives you quite a bit of choice.

Screw watches, I'd buy a Leica setup for £12k instead.

New MacBook seems to be the ultimate travel laptop though. Amazing bit of engineering. And USB3.1 is the connector the world deserves.

Here we are. Its not that great tbh apart from the Apple logo. But to be fair, 1000 dollars on collector edition is nothing new. Many companies do this.

$10,000 is crazy for something, let's face it, that's going to be obsolete in a year and break a few years after. You could get a proper Swiss watch for that which would last generations and never go out a fashion. Plus you have to drop another $700 to make it work.

The MacBook does look beautiful especially in Gold tone (Apple has managed to find a Gold which doesn't look gaudy) and the design blurs the lines between their traditional and modern portable devices. I wonder how they are going to improve the MacBook Air though.

It's going to be interesting to see the demand for the watch. I hope MS steps up it's game now because it was rumoured they are developing their own watch with the MS band technology but just waited to see Apple's unveil.

It's funny how we have had smart watches for nearly a decade now a yet again it's taken Apple to bring the subject into popularity.

@Robin. To be fair, that 10000 dollars is for special edition, which I believe has a market for a money wasters. Blackberry and numerous others has done this too.

However, I object to the standard $599 upwards. Ipod Nano doesnt even goes that far. Its essentially a Nano with sensors and some features added, but definitely not 200+ dollars plus.

I agree, even at the base price you could get a nice normal watch and a dedicated fitness band like a Garmin Vivofit and end up having a better experience.... and if you went the totally smart watch route the competition is just a good looking and more affordable.

The fact you can get fully functioning Android phones for the price of the watch is a bad enough thought!

This is my view on it. I was all set to buy a regular 42mm model, but not at $549. And that's possibly before knowing if the configuration I wanted (Dark Steel, Link Bracelet) could cost me even more (up to $1,000 according to Engadget on the regular model). It does not matter to me what apps are on it, or what it can do, I refuse to spend $550+ on a digital watch that could be replaced in 1-2 years by the next model & deemed "outdated". I have wanted a nice, everyday watch for a long time & thought this would be great since it integrates with my 6. Just not at that price.

The $10,000 one just baffles me. If I wanted a 5-figure watch on my wrist I'd be wearing my father's old Rolex Presidential.

*Out of curiosity, what is the next closest competitor's price to the iWatch? Samsung's?

The Samsung Gear S is the closest priced but it doesn't have the fitness features. The LG G Watch R looks the best after the Apple Watch IMO and the MS band is the most fully featured Smart Watch on the market after the Apple Watch but it's in a fitness band shape.

I agree about the price, after having to buy an iPhone and also getting the middle of the range watch it's going to be a costly escapade.

So preorders for the watch opened today and it's already sold out and on backorder... Jeez people need to calm down! They haven't even seen it yet! Apparently it runs very sluggishly and the battery life is pretty poor, you can imagine there is going to be a new revision in only a couple of months.

Even the verge, known for licking Apple, said it had no real use and rate it 7, lower than the Motorola 360.

Plus Emojies on that are creepy.

The watch has GPS so it will have bad battery life just due to it.
Other watches use the phone for GPS location and seeing as you need an iphone to use it, it is kinda redundant.

It is like apple wants to know where all apple watch users are in terms of suburb, city ect.

Your last sentence made funnier considering they made 3 castes model of watches.

So imagine the Gold ones are in places like Beverly Hills, The metal are in Big town, The Sport are in suburbs and small towns, and none on Detroit.

I still have to find a use case for any smart watch, and I usually don't need a lot of encouragement to go out and buy gadgets. I just don't want an extra device with me. And as an accessory, I find it too expensive, since you can get really nice looking and extremely well built Swiss watches for the same price or even less. And those have the added value of not everyone having one.

Maybe this will change after a revision or two and once there are a few decent apps out, but I won't be buying one until then.

I've got an LG G Watch R and don't really understand the need for it. I love it and its a great watch but most of the additional features are useless.

The LG and the Motorola are the greatest ones at the moment IMO. They're also a LOT cheaper than the Apple.

I guess what bothers me most about these gadgets, as @McLaren already put it: A watch is a timeless piece. I have several of them from different brands and I pick one depending on the occasion and what else I'm wearing. These new devices are part of the 'throw away' generation, which means they will be obsolete after a year or two.

That's not something I'm looking for. I have no problem spending 700,- on a watch (for a decent watch it's actually a fairly low/midrange price), but it has to be something I want to keep on wearing.

I guess after a revision or two we'll see the following:

- Increased battery life
- Standalone operation (phone not needed)
- Fully customizable with 3rd party straps (and possibly cases)

Maybe then I'll consider one.
