The biking thread

Had a nice ride to Clovelly Beach today (only 7km round trip) - but its a far nicer ride then down to Bondi and back. Less hilly and less traffics.

Oddly, pedestrians are proving more of a menace then cars of late - wondering around the sidewalk with earphones in and oblivious to bells. Or mom's not keeping an eye on kids who also wander all over the show whilst slurping up melting ice cream cones..:grumpy:

I'm gonna be there! Swansea has had a good year, last year we had the tour of Britain going up Constitution Hill, this year we have bikes coming down them :D

I hate driving that hill, can't imagine cycling those cobbles...

That does look like a pretty steep hill!!! I also second the need for a awesomotrip story.

Nice one, does that mean you ordered the torch as well? When you get it the best thing to do is make sure the battery is fully charged then look directly into it when you switch it on (seriously do not do that!). Another amusing use for the torch is giving yourself a hand x-ray ;)

Yep - torch, clip and tail light. I already have a battery charger knocking around somewhere and I'll pick up some new AA rechargeables soon 👍

Ah, that torch doesn't use AA batteries, it uses Li-ion batteries which need a specific charger.

You need this charger and these batteries but you can get them cheaper by joining in on the group buy described in this thread. It seems fairly simply and it sounds like you can get the discount on the batteries and the charger. I feel bad that the torch is now less cheap but if it's any consolation it is all kinds of awesome.

Confusificated.

Edit: o'wait. I see, its not AA size. :dunce:

No worries :D It still worked out very cheeps!

Yup, different size. They're quite a bit bigger than AA size but more importantly they are a higher voltage (3.7v to 1.2v) which means they're more powerful and have a higher energy density...or something like that. A definite plus point on thinking they were AA is avoiding the charger I initially linked which is a bit rubbish TBH, the one I've linked today (which I now have myself) is significantly better. Also the batteries I've linked above are better than the first ones I got but not in such a huge way.

Also also ask for an Oz plug with the charger in case they send a US one.

Being as I live in a mountain city I have to take on two very similar hill at each end of my trip to work and back. I don't ride them hard. I only go all out once a week when I'm not in the office.

Ah, the quick blast up and down to get the fire in your legs going and leaving your aggression on the bike when you finished! Makes you feel like the master of the world sometimes.

:dopey: I train on hills like that. Awesome burn going up, awesome speed going down. I'm not sure doing 50+ down those cobbles would be such a good idea though. Might end in hospital.
It's a 1 in 4 climb, on cobbles, in the wet for 293 metres! It was torture just watching them climb it!

But yeah, the downhill guys are going to be immense. And glad to see you don't avoid the hills!

Ahh the end of Kranked 8, my favourite MTB video ever.

This is the trailer, I'd recommend watching it if you haven't already. It's the perfect mix between great cinematography and riding.

Mm. Did 35km on the bike this weekend 👍 Legs feel a bit heavy now but it was really good fun.

Glad I gave the old chain some oil recently. I was amongst some 'enthusiast' riders today on flash road bikes but their gear sets where creaking like a cheap motel bed.

Looking nice, very nice. Are your front forks meant to be that way round? I know you're not using V brakes but the brake mount is at the back.

That's what mine sounds like in certain gears. The dérailleur is completely aligned wrong, it's been months since I've tweaked it. It almost sound like a fishing real.

Yep they are the correct way round. Also are you referring to the disc mount?

I believe he's referring to the arc connecting the lower parts of the fork, it indeed looks more than mildly interesting behind the wheel but looking at the rest of the fork (disc brake mount, axle positioning) that's how it must be.

Ahh ok, I was just curious because RC41 Fighters don't have V-mounts. I'm not sure why Pace designed it like that but there must be a valid reason because DT Swiss have kept it that way, Manitou also have the arc behind the stanchions.

Yeah, I did mean the arc over the tyre behind the main shocks. It's just the opposite to mine is all so I thought maybe it was backwards. I don't know too much about mountain bikes to be honest.

Grease and oil, well, it's just extra weight isn't it? :D

Looked really amateur today going past all the leisure club cyclists, my lycras are in a parcel box somewhere in the Indian Ocean. So rugby shorts and long sleeve T-shirt!

Anyway, relief map.

That's one of my main sources of fun in summertime... the other guy has a $4000 road bike, full *insert professional team name here* themed riding kit, including aerodynamic glasses and a time trial helmet - and I go zooming past on a $300 supermarket-spec MTB in my denim shorts and an Adidas T-shirt, the package completed with a hiking style backpack.

^ I've been doing that for a few years. It's great fun. I use a hybrid road / mountain bike chopped together with racing parts at the cost of a few hundred £ capable of massive speed, and these guys on the thousand £ bikes just ride along like grannies with their spandex on.

Have only meet 1 bloke over the recent past that gave me a run for my money and he was a potential Olympiad in training.
