The biking thread

Mm. Did 35km on the bike this weekend đź‘Ť Legs feel a bit heavy now but it was really good fun.

Glad I gave the old chain some oil recently. I was amongst some 'enthusiast' riders today on flash road bikes but their gear sets where creaking like a cheap motel bed.

Good work mate, how long did it take?

BECAUSE RACEBIKE

I know I said no pictures until it's complete but the foggy weather tempted me into a photograph.

Nice Tom :drool:đź‘Ť Got any rides planned for when it's finished?

Anyway, relief map.

That looks steep! What do you use to track the ride and which website is that relief from?

I don't use a GPS or anything, or even a bicycle computer so speed is simply done by distance over time! And after aus I'm pretty good at estimating my speed anywhere between 12-25 km/h.

And on a Sunday sometime soon...

Probably just the usual local loops and Cannock Chase, although I'll be out as much as possible when it's done!

I wish I had some local loops :grumpy: I went up Billinge Hill on Saturday with a mate who lives near there and got very muddy but it was good fun and had a laugh trying to do some jumps in the woods, I don't think the kids jumping there were very impressed though :ouch:

I'm planning to get to Llandegla just before Christmas, hopefully it will have quietened down by then because it sounds pretty busy at the moment.

I was broken into 3 rides - 10, 15 and 10km :embarrassed:.

All up, I averaged 20.8kph (đź‘Ť) and it was about 2h20m riding time :)

Good work, I'm averaging about 22kph on my road rides ATM which is get a sweat on but not keel over pace. Off road is much slower!

That's one of my main sources of fun in summertime... the other guy has a $4000 road bike, full *insert professional team name here* themed riding kit, including aerodynamic glasses and a time trial helmet - and I go zooming past on a $300 supermarket-spec MTB in my denim shorts and an Adidas T-shirt, the package completed with a hiking style backpack.

I've yet to meet someone overtaking me and I'm one of those fully equipped guys. Once my friend wanted to join me, when we went downhill on the way back I said "Try to slipstream me down". Of course, as I weigh 85 kg, I stormed down the mountain. Ended up waiting a few moments for him at the bottom before he caught up. Nothing beats that moment when you lay your forearms on the handlebars, and storm down a stretch of road like a big powerhouse.

Went through all my cycling sessions of this summer and my maximum speed was 80 km/h dead on. Each time I use my bike and I look how thin my tires are, I think "bloody hell". Pretty scary to think that if I lose control at that speed, I'm pretty much dead. But on the bike I never think about the risk.

Little update on my bike: I have been using it to ride to university every day. Now it's halfway November and I'm up to the point where I need to store in the bike until the next summer. My rear brake is completely worn down, no braking power at all from it any longer, and my slicks are completely worn down as well. God knows how I haven't drifted my way back home yet. Guess I already have a small list of what needs to be changed for next summer.

Currently I'm trying to lose weight to gain speed during climbing. I'll have to figure out how to keep my legs in shape during the hard winter so I don't lose too much strength.

My rear is in perfect condition, my front brake is the thing with nothing left in it. Am I doing some thing wrong?

To be fair, I won't use it on a bend but in a straight line coming off the bottom of a mountain I'd rather not rely on my rear brake.

Pads on the front need replacing, for the second time, but only after several thousand km. Rears are good for another 2 years as far as I'm concerned.

I guess the front brakes should be the first to go, but for some reason I automatically grab for my rear brakes. I was told to go for more front brake in the future, though.

Er......for once.........I meant that...............she'd be happier if I actually wore a skid lid. Sorry for the confusion.

Although.....we are on different time zones and it's 3:15am for me.

Same, although it usually dosen't work.

Best get that checked out. Maybe your tubes are twisted...? :dopey:

Had a bit of a scary moment today btw... Accelerating on a slippery pavement. Lost traction, nearly hit my balls off the stem. Managed to not. Like a boss ;)

You get it dialled then, Tom? Video please! :D

Nah, I've not practiced for ages. Getting it half way still attracts the women though ;)

Also my bike shop can't fit a new rear hose until friday so no midweek rides for me, it will be ready for the weekend though!

Until you gouge yourself on your bars again...

I'll really need to try and get out at the weekend. I want to do exercise, and cycling hurts my knee the least, but still quite a lot... I'm just getting so gone with not doing any sport! Will just have to pump myself full of co-codamol, head out on the bike and see what happens. :P

Trying to explain the thrill of coming down a mountain on tyres no thicker than your thumb, clothing as thin as paper, very small brakes and a lump of polystyrene on your head just doesn't seem to impress some people, especially my mum!

What really impresses the girls is spending far too long tinkering with your bike then coming in to watch mountain bike videos...err, hang on a minute that should have said what really pisses off the girls!

My current project is fixing up my sons new bike (Specialized Hotrock 12) ready to give him for his birthday in 2 weeks, it's the most satisfying spannering I've ever done and makes me feel like a proper old skool dad :D Also it's ridiculously easy working on it as it's small and simple plus it also helps that it's better quality than my own bike. It's completely stripped at the moment so I took the frame into the popular car accessory shop to colour match some paint to touch up a few scratches although I may respray the whole forks. I've also ordered him some elbow, knee and wrist pads so he looks the part not that he'll be coming to much harm with stabilisers on ;)

Neal, you are waaaaaay more ambitious than I would be with taking his ride apart and re-spraying it!

I guess the front brakes should be the first to go, but for some reason I automatically grab for my rear brakes. I was told to go for more front brake in the future, though.

I tend to brake the rears more than most people, as sometimes I want to reduce the speed of the bike itself without harming the turning motion of the front, as I have noticed when I've badly judged a turn that the front does seem to understeer a lot more than if I just applied some rear brake to turn in a little bit better.

What I mean is, I apply both brakes quite hard, then come off the front brake, lessen the back brake quite a bit to still slow down and make the turn and then let go of it when I am comfortable with the bike.

Although it could be just me.

I don't like it sometimes, when you have to let go of both brakes and whiz around the corner hoping to dear God that you're actually going to make it with the finest tolerances of grip and angle required. Gets the heart going, that does!

Thanks but it really is quite simple...so far! All you need is an adjustable spanner and a couple of alley keys and screw drivers. Everytime I do anything to my bike I end up buying a load of specialist tools which I'm certain won't work on my next bike.

There is a coaster/pedal back brake in the rear hub which I've got no idea how to service but I'm sure google will tell me :dopey:

Awesome Neal! Hope Jack enjoys the bike as much as you do! ;)

Why do I get so many punctures? Had millions on my back wheel, just fixed the last one about 2 days ago... And now I've got a slow puncture on my front which made cycling home from the station quite interesting! :irked:

.... You got some Slime in the tube itself?

green%20slime.jpg

Or maybe something is pinching the tube?

Yeah really should get some slime inner tubes... :P Nah it's all thorns and stuff.

Ah, those sort of things.

Could try getting Kelvar and thicker material for the actual tyre, but then I guess the ride quality may suffer and/or you're still going to get punctures anyway!

Man up? (I always tell you this Allyn)

I pulled two large thorns out my rear Panaracer about four weeks back, my tube only just went beyond half flat this week. Pump it back to normal pressures and it's good for another few weeks.

Also I'm jelly of your sons bike Neal.

Wait, what?

Wouldn't pumping the tube up increase the hole size that is already there? And then make the air rush out? Which would then deflate it down until the hole then get closed by the tube itself?

Never!

My tubes must be made of durex or something... One small hole and its life is ruined...

It was pretty fun cycling home on a flatish front though! Had to try my best not to lean into corners while I was still ragging it...
