The biking thread

Hope stuff looks awesome, my brother's old Orange was covered in it đź‘Ť

The brakes at least....I'm not a big fan of cartridge bearings in hubs personally but the nicely machined alu is hard to resist sometimes:guilty:

The Hope brakes on my Partiot are almost 12 years old now and still feel as good as new. I haven't serviced them for years either and have never serviced the brakes on my Subzero as I've never felt the need.

Once I called hope up to get some new seals for the master cylinder on one of my brakes and was asked how long I had brakes for and how many I had....end result was they sent me 2 new seal kits for free when I called up to buy a replacement kit for one brake. Now that's the kind of customer service I like

Weather. Good. Pedals. Fitted. Cleets. Fitted. Cycle computer. Fitted. Lunch. Pending.

Can't wait to go for this ride.

Had my first bite today. Took the apex way too early and too fast going from the parking garage to the walkway ramp. Pulled the rear brakes and tried to turn but I didn't want to get wobbly and possibly head over the handlebars so I kinda side-swiped the wall and came to a stop shortly after. Good thing my bar stem can get loose because my handlebars got knocked to the left but the wheel stayed straight. Guess that kinda saved my ass. I'm also glad the ramp barrier is solid concrete and not made of brick or metal bars because my handlebars would have gotten caught and I'd be screwed.
I once bent a wheel rim after avoiding a head on collision with a car as I swooped into a side road. It was a small price to pay!

Epic Fail.

Lessons of the day; I need to wear gloves and clips work your hamstrings.

Went for my cycle, up the Neath valley, and down the Swansea valley. Done it a few times, nice climb and descent about the mid point. Was a bit rough heading out, heck of a head wind (22 mph, gusting to 34 mph, met office) but clips were nice and I didn't fall flat the first time I had to stop and unclip! Though it was more difficult to get back into them which meant I struggled to get going.

However, the big issue was the wind + the temp (6C), my hands were freezing! And then coming down the hill I managed 36 mph (Dammit!) but had to chicken out half way because I didn't think my hands would reach the brakes by the bottom they were that frozen :(

Cruising down the by-pass, hamstrings aching, at about 20 mph I had to stop and call my mam to pick me up (Thankfully we have a Previa) because the sun had set, temp dropped further, and my hands were getting painfully numb. I figured the risk to myself wasn't worth going on, but my mam wasn't too impressed, as it was half time of Swansea -Arsenal on tv. Lucky we got back in time for her to watch second half.

Cliffs.
- Clips, great.
- Wind and low temps = NEED GLOVES.
- Hamstrings ache.

Wasn't windy here today but it was freezing cold so I used these gloves today. No problems with cold hands and was out for a good few hours:tup: (they're good in cold winds too:sly:)

I got those gloves for my brother for Christmas at his request from Chain reaction Cycles when they had 10% off. I wish I'd ordered some myself because they were properly nice.

I helped set up a mates new Cube 29er LTD Pro yesterday as he wouldn't know where to start adjusting stuff and it was mail order so needed a tweak and the fork setting up. It's a really nice bike and didn't look as awkward as I thought it would with the big wheels but I still prefer 26". I had a bit of a ride of it round the block and it didn't feel massively different to my bike but it definitely turns slower which is what you'd expect so you'd need to lean it over further to get round the same corner at the same speed.

Did you go to GT today then? It was bloody freeeeezing!

Aye, few goes on the freeride to warm up then the tyres started feeling a bit soft on landing so went down Berm Baby Berm to get a pump.

Went up the hill next.....rode the secret trail that starts near the top of spooky wood...back along to the 3rd section of the red descent, blew past a bunch of young pups on shiny bikes and then followed the red to the bottom.

Dunno if you've ever ridden the secret trail but it's really muddy.....at one point I rode into a deep puddle of semi-frozen mud and bike came to a complete stanstill! Tried to scrape some of the mud off when I got back to the car and it had all frozen solid on the bike:dopey:

It was a braw day:tup:

How was your ride? :)

They seem to last pretty well too....mine are in their 2nd winter:) (might be a slightly different model I have than linked to but close enough)

Also, don't think it mentioned it in the link but they're ideal for throwing snowballs too:sly:

EDIT...oh aye, I think there's an Endura factory shop somewhere near where Aldo lives.

I used my super dupa Hein gericke winter motorbike gloves for snowboarding, the fingers had a thick layer of ice on them but my hands were toasty :D

So halfway January and I'm still riding my worn-down, slicks-equipped racing bike... Halfway January... In Norway...

We've not even had an inch of snow over here in southern Norway. Madness!

Do you guys have that Strava biking app? Seems pretty cool.

I went for a ride at Hemlock today only to discover the regulars are part way through building a 6ft tall take-off and a 9ft landing for the first jump in a steep downhill row of three or four. Needless to say the place looks a mess right now but once it's complete it will be so great, bonus points for the noob line being knocked down to make way for it so all the annoying kids/chavs will disappear.

Don't want to anymore. I fractured my foot a few months ago and I wasn't racing. Racing is far more important to me then BMX is. I don't want to risk getting hurt again...

BMX was very fun though. Gave me some good times. Especially when you just go ride with friends where ever just cruising whether it's riding street, Park, trails, etc. Just learning new things and seeing if you can outdo your friends. Also I loved to BS with my friends :sly:

Available for iOS? I must check it out.

On the subject of gloves; why on earth would one not wear them? Winter's cold, I know that but I still only wear my fingerless, gel padded riding glovers, and the summer is warm, so I wear my fingerless, gel padded riding gloves. Wouldn't leave home without them!

I use Endomondo and Strava sounds quite similar, as it's free on iOS I've downloaded it and will compare them on my ride tonight although one difference I can see already that isn't as good as Endomondo is you can't set it to auto pause when you stop (e.g. at traffic lights).

I always wear gloves and so far the same pair of gloves all year round although it's properly cold today so I may put some non-bike specific warm gloves over them.

Full finger gloves for me all year round....something that will hopefully stop my hands getting cut up in a crash. My summer gloves are just one layer, the winter gloves have two layers.

I've got little black specs of grit embedded in my palm from learning that it's really not fun if you skin your hands.....makes it very difficult to do most things:ouch:

Helmet and gloves....two things I don't feel right riding without:tup:

PS on the helmet front I've smashed two and walked away but have seen one of my best mates in a coma with a fractured skull after a crash without a helmet.

I have hard hands from weight lifting for years, and I've played football and rugby in the deepest Welsh winters without an issue.

It's the wind chill that killed me, n00b mistake.

Sounds decent mate. đź‘Ť Those young pups were probably the other people from the uni club... Surprisingly I wasn't on the worst bike there and I could keep up with the peeps on full sussers. I had great fun but I think some of the routes have taken a battering over winter cause there are loads of the natural ones that are rougher than I remember. All adds to the fun in most cases! :D I didn't fall off but it felt like I was hit by a bus afterwards! Fingers still killing me from the death grip I had with my cold hands!

I've not been on the secret trail - didn't even know there was one!

Ooooo where abouts?

Neal, you need to get to Scotland for some riding. ;)

Believe me I want to, won't be this year but I do plan on a family holiday up there with days off out for some proper riding.

And you just happen to be staying 1 minute away from Glentress... DISASTER! :D đź’ˇ

If that means buy you a full sus.... I doubt it. :indiff:

:sly:

That's not going to happen...evaaaaaaar!

Do you guys have that Strava biking app? Seems pretty cool.

Right then, I've been for my usual ride tonight with both Endomondo and Strava apps tracking the ride at the same time with the below results. (disclaimer: I was slow because I'm recovering from a pulled calf muscle and serious man illness of the throat etc)

Endomondo:
Distance 20.43km
Time 1.00:39
Average speed 20.2km/h
Max speed 35.4km/h
Total elevation gain 522m
Calories 892kcal

Strava:
Distance 20.4km
Time 1.01:18
Average speed 20.4km/h
Max speed 52.2km/h
Total elevation gain 186m
Calories 572kcal

The distance, time and average speed are close enough for both apps which is good but there are huge discrepancies in the rest. The Max speed for Strava is an error as the logged route deviated from the road so the spike in speed is the route getting back on track. Strava appears to be much more consistent tracking elevation and therefore I'm assuming the elevation gain is correct, I'm fairly certain I haven't just climbed over 500m! I don't know what to think about the calories, the calculation is always a comprimise so god knows which is closer. I'm going to run both apps for a while and have a bit more of a play with them to see which combo I prefer, I think the Endomondo website is better in general but I do like the segments on Strava and the option to log you bikes and gear.

Try both yourself to see which you prefer, PM me if you want to befriend/follow me on either of them đź‘Ť

I use mapmyride.com for my relief maps and distances, you could use that to validate your climb but it may be on-road only.

Also, the calorie thing will depend on too many things to ever be accurate. Fitness and weight being part of it.
