I Renown I
As I didn't want to crowd the "Show off your latest purchase" thread with pictures of one of my recent acquisitions, I figured it was ideal to spawn off into a spin-off of sorts. Which will serve the same purpose as my Gunpla thread (which I'm going to update at some point during the day). While it seems to serve a single purpose at the moment, I'll cram a bunch of other memorabilia from movies, games, comics, etc. into this thread in due time - I'll also change the thread title once I think of one to suit it.

Without further ado....

It has arrived!

Long sword is looooonnnnng.

DSC00555.jpg

Look, three for one. :P

DSC00575.jpg

A good look at the 31 in. blade.

Triforce!

If you can see them, I'll let those two stray hair pieces speak for themselves. If you can't, just know that sharp sword (and end of sword) is sharp. Dull? Yeah, dull my left arse cheek.

DSC00570.jpg

Showing some of the imperfections (actually it looks quite good now, except for the paint run-off).

DSC00569.jpg

There we go. The reverse side shows some imperfection better then the previous side.

A look at the handle. Sword has some weight to it, and while the handle is made from resin (or at least I'm assuming, I flicked it with my fingers a couple of times and it does sound like resin...I'll have to check) it's still damn sturdy. Although I'm more then cautious to pick up the sword facing upward (the same way you see it now).

Two more pics showing the imperfections...

And finally....

Considering the only slight imperfections I could find was with the paint, and not the item itself speaks a great deal of the quality of this replica (some things are a bit "wrong" but for $59.99...you won't hear any of that from me). I'd give it a straight 8.7/10 all around.

Nice! Just don't come into my house dressed like Attila the Hun in the middle of the night and butter my toast with that :P.

Yeah, it's so sharp that you rest it on its point.

Looks like a wallhanger to me. Don't know why they bother sharpening those. Don't go swinging it around now.

It is more of a decorative than practical sword it looks like. Still cool though. Just don't expect it to stay in one piece after clashing with a carbon steel blade.

Only an idiot bangs swords together. Sharp ones too. Also, the carbon steel would likely fragment as it's too brittle to stand up to heavy impact.

I said it was sharp, I never implied it was "OMG, it'll shave through 2ft of steel" sharp. :P

And it is a wall hanger, the only thing that's dangerous enough sharp is the tip, the edges are quite dull...it's mostly friction and the weight that allows the edges to cut through anything.

I just have to find a good enough place to hang it in my room, which I won't be able to do unless I remove a poster (or five).

I bet that'll make the ladies go nuts.

And the point of this was....what?

Comedy relief.

Nice sword however 👍, Ive never been one for decorations (never put posters up as a kid/teen) but I've always appreciated some of my mates rooms over time with all the cool stuff they had hanging up or on display.

Dude, get a poster of a large order of french fries and frame it.

mukashi, mukashi (long, long ago) blades banged together frequently. And traditionally forged carbon steel blades are pretty strong.

Yeah, you would say something like that...

My eyes. I've got them on you.

Ditto. And a large part of European combat in medieval times was to use two-handed and hand-and-a-half swords (also known as "Bastard" swords), for defense as well as offense. Single-handed viking swords were the shizznit when it came to toughness, though. They still are. It's virtually impossible to re-enact or perform with them as they break everything they come into contact with. Unless the other dude also has a viking style sword.

So yeah, I'm a bit of a loonie, (:D) but sparring with longswords is one of the most awesome things I've ever done.

Only the cutting edge was hardened steel. The rest of the blade was super flexible. I'd guess those swords long ago rarely made blade-to-blade impact. Unless one was fighting in jodan.

The blade was waterquenched after a layer of clay was applied to the edge to create the hard edge which retained sharpness. I have several old blades and super flexible is not a word I would use to describe them. Back then, when death was a hair's breadth away, you stopped that strike however you could and blades quite often made contact with other blades. Many of the kata in old koryu require you to receive the opponents attack with your blade (at an angle so that you don't take the brunt of the blow's force) before countering with a cut of your own.

Well they're not going to be a pool noodle. But if you hit it hard enough and watch in slomo (remember the mythbusters episode?) they bend quite a bit before they break.

Distance was the only protection in a ye-olde-japanese-swordfight. They could try and stop a full strike with the blade, but it would likely be severely damaged and they'd get cut anyway.

This isn't quite true. In order to cut an opponent you need to be at a distance where you can also be cut. If you stay out of distance, you won't lose, but you will never win. Eventually you have to enter the danger zone and there are techniques designed to get you through that, many of which involve blocking a strike with your blade. Receiving with the ha, shinogi, or mune will produce different results.

(p.s. I love this kind of talk.)

I never said you'd be able to kill someone. Maybe if you were like some kinda Ninjer.

Anyway, most of the ojiwaza I've ever seen doesn't take the brunt of impact on the cutting edge. You'd have to have some crazy Voldo wrists to get the sword into such a position anyway.

edit: But if I was going into a fight with a Zelda sword, I'd just whip out my boomerang like SCHWING.

So, I seem to have turned over two pages at once. I may regret asking this, but you've bought a sword blank with a plastic handle for $60? Reason?

Why do that when you can just take out of the slingshot and pop someone in the eye?

Again, it's a collectible and I wanted it.

You could've just bought a handle and put it on a silver-painted yard stake.

I had a feeling it had something to do with violence. Always does with you.

That, or women that can toss you over their shoulders with one arm using minimalist effort.

I did not know entrance to Lost Woods was 60 rupe..... er, dollars. Now pictures of you with a green hat.
