Your thoughts?

In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful race cars ever. I can't believe it's from 1967! The curvy look is way ahead of its time.

It's an absolute blast to drive in GT4, especially with a Stage 3 turbo. The car isn't glued to the track the way an R8 is, but the handling has something unique about it that makes it so much fun to drive.

What are your thoughts about this car?

Its certainly unique and great to drive, but the 2J looks even weirder with those fan/turbine things on the back. Am I right in saying the 2D's only got 4 gears cos I seems to remember its acceleration being all over the place.

This is from memory, but I think it was just 3 speeds, simulating the GM automatic tranny used in the real car.

The 2D is one of my favorite cars in GT4. I have a Hot Wheel of it so I was stoked to find Polyphony Digital included it this time around.

I remembe three gears, but I also remember there being enough power to propell the car nicely, stock. The corvette C1 has two gears. Much worse than the 2d.

Yes its only got 3 gears, and yes the accel. is strange, but its a brilliant car that was ahead of its time.

Does Chapparel still produce races cars?

Unfortunately, no. Jim Hall stopped designing cars in the 80's, and now operates a racing school in California... for which many Texans are waiting for him to come back home. ;)

Jim Hall is truly a remarkable man, with a very colorful resume, both in his personal and professional life. As a driver, builder, and professor, he has been responsible for many advancements in automotive racing, and like Carol Shelby, is an icon in the automotive racing world.

As for Chapparel's, all told I think about a dozen models were built. There is a museum in Midland Texas that aquired a large collection of his cars and built a wing to display them in. On their site, they have some decent pics of some of the cars in the collection. They also sell a DVD with historic racing footage of many of the cars in action. Here is a LINK to their website.

uh, think I read somewhere that they made one more new car using the old original fiberglass molds

I love driving the car, I drive the it as a stick shift, I love cruising and listening to the engine pur, while driving it reminds me of what it might of been like to drive the car back then. I love the curves that the body has, and yet the simple racing paint job of white and the black number make it look right, as it should be. It proves you dont need 50 million colors on your car to make it look nice. I find cruising in the car to be very enjoyable, especialy if you are stressed out about something. One nice thing about its three speed is that you dont have to shift every five seconds.

As long as you don't drop below about 40mph the acceleration in this thing is great. I too love the "old school" handling. It actually handles a lot like a good MR road car, but with more grip than most of them. Unlike most race cars, it has a little bit of forgiveness to it. I was just driving it again earlier this evening and thinking that it and the Pagani Zonda race car are my two favorite race cars in the game (I generally prefer driving road cars).

I think what I like best of all is the way you can throw it around a lot like an MR road car, just makes it a blast for me!!!

The Jim Hall (actually Jim Hall II) who runs the kart racing school is not the Jim Hall of Chaparral fame (I don't know if they are related but he sure looks like he could be his son).

Digital, nice summary and link 👍

The 2D is definitely one of my favorites.

I really don't mind the fact that it only has a 3-speed gearbox as it is really powerful, plus it means you don't have to shift gears often. :)

By the 1970's Chaparral started making F1 cars in partnership with McLaren. They weren't exactly successful though.

I love the 2D! When i was just window shopping through the dealerships it suprized me that they had this car.. and looking at its beauty i just knew i had to have it. So i saved up the 1.1 million cr to buy that thing right off the bat :) it was only later i learned that you actually won it too... :dunce:

Someone said something about its shape being ahead of its time? I wouldn't say so, but maybe by a year at best. Similar looking cars that came out the same year would be the Lola T70, Porsche 906, and the Ferrari 330P, with the Matra MS630 coming in a year later. Hopefully we get to see these cars in the upcoming game

I would love it if they made a bunch of old sixies and 70's can-am cars all of jims cars the old 904 and 917k porshes, lolas, ect
and some of the older tracks they raced on
they already made Nurembergring would be great if they made it like it was in the 60'-70's before all the changes it has now
Riverside raceway would be great too.
On a note about the j2: tho hope the put way better a.i in the new game due to the fact, i was just playing around and driving that car on the seattle road and noticed it kinda slid a bit more then it should have.
i posted a few years ago on the gt2 thread about the j2
some one had joked about " whom uses a autoboxer in racing anyways?"
alot of people told him of the f1 cars and there paddle shifting and the grearboxes are semi auto, so i posted about jim hall and his wonderful cars and how he used automatics, and i was reading on a site i had that when they started the fan motors in the rear the downforce was so great it sucked the car down 2 inches! while the car was at idle.
and the car with the fans running to " suck" it to the track was so great it was like driving on rails.
also on the post by peterjb on the f1 cars they made, <not knocking your or hashing you in anyway> if i recall correct it wasnt f1 right away, it was indy cars and they won with rick mears driving i could be wrong on the f1 thingy tho but think was little later 70's or might have been closer to the 80's on that ill have to check

In the June 07 issue of Car and Driver there is an article about
Chaparral-seems Jim Hall is building 'new' Chaparral 2E's using the original tooling from the 1960's. Great article, brilliant guy, ahead of his time to the point of being marginalized in his day.

I think it's AWESOME!!! Except for the fact that when you do B-Spec for an endurance race the B-Spec driver doesn't know what to do with it. You've got to be good to handle it! My favorite feature though is that it can go 130 mph in reverse.

Whoops, I'm thinking about the 2J. The 2D's a good car too.

Greetings One And All,
Fireball's photos brought back a flood of memories, of what had to be one of the most exciting racing series of all times, Can Am. I had the great fortune to drive at several venues, in a Lola T70, from 1967-1969. What wsa so impressive about Mr. Halls cars was the attention to detail, and the inovation! These were thunderously fast, Godawful powerful cars built without the benefit of computer, or electronic systems. These were cars that had torque enough to change the Earth's rotation! And speeds that were chilling in their absolute velocity. Mistakes were met with disasterous, and some times fatal results. But to hear a grid full of these monsters at full cry ripping down the front straight at The Glen, or to rip through the curves at Riverside was an experience that still brings chills!
The Chappy is a beautiful machine, and a fantastic representitive of a bygone era, of great machines and even greater men. I for one am most glad to have it in my garage
Nostalgicaly Yours,
Fangio

I had a Tyco HO Slot Car of the 2G, which is like the 2D with a rear wing.
