the clones are coming

I still don't understand why the company would claim it unless it was true. They know they're going to have to prove it at some point, so why ruin your reputation by lying? [/B]

You might want to read up on these guys - I don't think they're too worried about their 'reputation'.

That is the missing link for me too, though - what have they got to gain from this, if it's false? Even if it's true, cloning is illegal in the US, isn't it? This was done in the US, right?

We'll see how this pans out - I just hope if it is true that the girl is normal, and subject to the usual litany of horrors that clones typically go through.

Yeah, I heard on WGN local news yesterday that they were associated with a group believing space aliens colonised the earth, which is, uh, a little weird, to say the least.

Yeah, that's my main question about the whole thing (what have they got to gain if it's false?). And it wasn't done in the US -- I'm not sure where it was done, but I heard in the same broadcast mentioned above that the main players would be "returning to the US today," suggesting they did the experiment elsewhere.

It's not just local. I love watching the news from back home.

Okay... back on topic.

I knew the channel went around the country but I didn't know the local news broadcasts did, too. Hmmm....

Ahh - that didn't manage to penetrate the fog that is Christmas...

Guess you don't have a whole lot to do there right now, hey mate?

Okay, did a little reading:
- human cloning is not actually illegal in the US
- the 'alleged' cloning did take place outside the US, the parents and baby are meant to be flying back to the US today
- there were raids of the Raeillians in Korea, and there appears to be some suggestion the process may have taken place there (no mention of whether it's North or South - one would assume the latter).

Nope, not a thing. Just watched 'The Fox Report' and found out a bit more -- namely that the woman who is the head of this group that believes the space aliens started Earth is much more level-headed that I ever though someone in her position would be. I saw clips of her being interviewed on both Fox News and CNN's Crossfire (who wanted to debate the political aspects of cloning, which she didn't understand), and, although it's clear she wants massive credit for doing this (hence going on the TV programs) she also believes in what she's doing.

No - the House of Representatives has passed a bill outlawing it, but because of the queue of anti-terrorism/security legislation currently before the Senate, it's yet to be passed and enacted.

That's weird...it's not illegal...

Well, these laws take time to draft and get passed, and given the 'importance' of the anti-terror legislation, it doesn't have precedence.

Same thing happens here - remember the huge debate over stem cell research back in July/August? The legislation got passed through both houses of Parliament three weeks ago!

Well, obviously, now that Conservatives control the Senate (and particularly after the current cloning situation), they're getting the bill passed.

For the research or against it?

Can anyone see any rational use for a clone?

And I also heard not to long ago that scientists have isolated a gene in a certain type of seahorse that is responsible for regeneration of it's own body parts. There are hopes of this gene being used in humans one day so that we may be able to grow back a lost limb. Has anyone heard of this and if so, could you please point me in the direction of any info that you might have on it.

Just two, and people are going to scream at me for the second. Only the first is legitimate.

A: Get a clone, grow it up, chain it up in the basement of a hospital or something, then when people need organs, just take the clone's. There would be no waiting list for organs after that, don't you agree?
B: Since oil comes from carbon-based life forms, if we clone then kill the clones and turn them into oil, we will never run out of oil. The only problem is the length of time it takes for carbon to be converted into oil, but scientists will invent a way to speed it up.

That would be absolutely sickening...

vat, and there was no news of that getting through... This old system takes so long to pass laws. I think they need to update the system a lot.

Hmm...those are legitimate but i'm sure that those will ever happen with all those "rights" protestors around.

Man, if I had a whole bunch of me's sitting around to use as spare parts, I'd be doing all sorts of crazy stuff.
Hmmm... I never thought of it like that... Imagine all the crazy risks you could take when there's so many safety nets!

A will happen - and you know why? - there's a lot of money made in it.

B - there's no way that can be energy efficient. Too many views of The Matrix, methinks.

For - thank goodness...

Yeah, really. My biggest problem with the conservatives is the way they take such an old-fashioned stance on issues, sometimes when the issues could truly benefit humanity. Stem cell research is one way, and another example is gun fingerprinting. If guns had these high-tech fingerprints, we could track down anyone in America with one bullet -- the sniper in Washington would've been stopped, with this in place, after the first shot he fired (which was the only one where he missed his target). Yet conservatives are against it!

There's enough money to be made in cloning as it stands now, even without harvesting organs. Weird Clonaid woman says that her company has people lined up (~2000 people) willing to pay -- get this -- to $200,000 for a clone, which is absolutely absurd, since adoption (or ACTUAL SEX) is probably a bit cheaper.

Clone, kill, put through process, get oil, convert into gasoline, power Audi, repeat. What a process...

I really don't get the gun thing over there - no other country does - it's a real 'only in America' thing

Well, fair point on the first one.

On the second one - well, your clone doesn't magically become an adult. It starts as a baby, and needs to be nurtured into an adult - and that's before taking into account the energy needed for conversion.

I don't much get it myself. In order to understand it, you must first understand that the NRA is the most powerful political group (excepting political parties) in the entire country. No politican wants to take them on. Hard lines taken on the NRA will score a politician major demerits.

If we can get x amount of oil on a baby clone, let's say, then we can get 2x oil on an adult clone. So I figure that we should kill the baby clone as soon as it's born and stick it through the process. Granted, we wouldn't get as much oil, but we wouldn't have to raise them in ignorance their whole life, and we wouldn't have to feed them, which you brought up.

Of course, what I say is completely inhumane and totally apathetic to humanity in general (err, inhumane -- I need some sleep) but if the scientists invent "The Process," it just may work!
