It's because of the holidays. Everything pretty much gets affected as they want their audience there since re-runs are extremely rare for anime in Japan. Miss an episode, and you're screwed, especially on something like One Piece that has been airing since 1999. I'm surprised they had One Piece airing Christmas morning in Japan, though I'm not shocked it won't be airing on New Years Day in Japan.

Pretty much. If you want to know what shows, here are some that FUNimation has stated will be halted (Some shows like Shana III and Guilty Crown, they simulcast an hour after the Japanese airing.).

Shows affected by the holidays to my knowledge, Guilty Crown, Mirrai Nikki, Last Exile (Don't know the full name.), One Piece, Toriko, Shakugan no Shana III (Final), and Hunter x Hunter (2011) (That anime is on Crunchryoll.).

Who hasn't seen at least one episode of Spice & Wolf? One of the most popular, and critically acclaimed anime out there.

Japanese tastes are much different from our tastes, so not really. Cowboy Bebop and The Big O for example weren't well-received there, but here, oh man they were so well-received here, especially Cowboy Bebop.

Regarding Winter 2012...

Kyousogiga looks pretty interesting. Love dat art style.
BRAVE10 looks cool. Cool looks =/= actually cool, however. It could go either way...
Another might be alright. Story sounds a bit meh, but the art is pretty, so... we'll see.
Nisemonogatari... haven't seen Bakemonogatari yet, so... yeah.

By the way, you know which Japanese animation company made targeting foreign markets a major part of their business model? Gonzo. They went bankrupt a year or two ago, after the U.S. market bubble burst. Do you know what their biggest hit of the decade was? Strike Witches.

Interesting, didn't really know Gonzo actually made anime targeted at more than just the Japanese audience, but it's the reason that led to their financial troubles.

If it's like Reborn!, who knows. Based off of the first 4 episodes of Reborn!, that flame stuff I had been seeing all this time that looked cool before actually watching the show just turned into hilarity (Who knows when the show will get serious, but I got 199 episodes left.) instead of staying cool. Just look at Tsuna in his boxers in the opening, and this video.
