So what you have is a few, select, instances where something goes for a decent amount more than initial purchase price. And the reality is most of it goes for 30% more, if it does appreciate at all, in a standard market. Which mean, oh my, $100 can turn into $130 after, what, a few years? Great return investment
A few? You clearly haven't looked at listings for OOP anime/highly desired limited editions for anime ever it seems. Say what you're saying to lots of anime collectors, and they'll laugh at you for "If it does appreciate at all, in a standard market."
Oh how many more I can post. I have LOTS of examples where you're turning over even $150 or more than what you paid for. My Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box 2 as I showed earlier is going for $200+. I paid $30 for it, if I put a listing up for $230, I'll make a $200 profit just like that.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000IBWR/?tag=gtplanet-20 -Please note, OVA 3 (Which FUNimation doesn't label as the third OVA, which can confuse people into thinking it's the first.) is still in print here, it's just that OVA's 1 and 2 have been OOP for a very long time.
-Took less than 6 months to go for the price it is going for now. It sold out before release despite being $400 here from nearly 2 months of pre-order, and a few months later, it sold out in Japan. There were 800 copies brought over here, as for Japan, who knows, but by going off
this (Right at the bottom.), I can make a guess at 30,000 copies as not every retailer doesn't have data get reported to Oricon. On a side-note, it sold 25,000+ copies in its first week of release in Japan.
Here's a thread listing everything that is OOP here, so you can get an idea of just how many more titles are OOP, and going for inflated prices, sometimes in the thousands. Note, many things from Bandai Entertainment and ADV Films may be listed, but are still available for now. Don't know why WTK includes many old ADV titles like Best Student Council and Azumanga Daioh which are still in print, or something like The Big O which is still out there by Bandai Entertainment.

And a few examples of where the prices were high until the shows got rescued by FUNimation. Excel Saga and FLCL for years were OOP, and going for $100+. You had to pay a pretty penny to get them.
Lastly here's what happens when a title goes into Robert's "Limited to Stock On Hand" status on Robert's Anime Corner Store.

Conversely, I'm selling basics licensing on images for 3 figures per image (and my name is nothing in the field) and can make a few hundred dollars a photo session. If I did a wedding per weekend this summer, I could make several thousand dollars. And that isn't me selling my camera gear to get money back, but if I have to sell it ever, I can gain back the investment in the equipment and possibly profit. On top of that, I can sell single prints as fine art and get several hundred percent return on material costs per print.
Face it, there is no way you can financially justify a serious anime hobby over a photography hobby. Not to mention it introduces me to a ton of people, builds a social network and develop social skills, and gives me an awesome portfolio to indicate I've traveled and so on. Which never hurts.
I never denied the fact photography can make you more money. It's a profession, anime watching has never, and never will be a profession. Sure something like playing video games can be a profession, but never anime watching. Also something like making anime can be a profession, but those animators don't make a whole lot. You yourself make WAY, WAY more money off photography right now than by being an overworked, and underpaid anime animator for a Japanese animation studio.
I was merely pointing out, many, many anime releases go up in price (As it's a niche product, and not in massive quantities.), and not for a decent amount at times, but for what many would call a small fortune. If you own all of Cardcaptor Sakura, you're sitting on top of money practically. Lots of collectors like me fear the very moment a title we want to own we still don't have goes OOP.
It's not like video games, where years later you can almost always get it for chump change. Also speaking of video games, anime video games at times can go for inflated prices as well. Look what happened to One Piece.
