My head hurts just by looking at all that. Why is that so, bud?

Also, it had been AGES, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGES since I last saw anyone anywhere even mention something about Utena. Man what a trip to the old days. Believe it or not that was aired here on open TV... uncensored and unchanged, just dubbed (quite good I might add). I remember it was so SO gay. I liked the glasses girl (surprise).

Gay? Wasn't that the point?

Yes, mostly, but it was unbearable. Utena was pretty hot, though, and her dub was awesome. It was a pretty weird show to see in open TV. I knew of some moms that had difficult times explaining some stuff to their little girls because of that crap.

Did you just imply Mikuru as a slut. ._.

No, I just said I liked chicks with nice boobs. And arses, too. Was I the only one who found that Mari pic I posted hot?

So what you have is a few, select, instances where something goes for a decent amount more than initial purchase price. And the reality is most of it goes for 30% more, if it does appreciate at all, in a standard market. Which mean, oh my, $100 can turn into $130 after, what, a few years? Great return investment
A few? You clearly haven't looked at listings for OOP anime/highly desired limited editions for anime ever it seems. Say what you're saying to lots of anime collectors, and they'll laugh at you for "If it does appreciate at all, in a standard market."

Oh how many more I can post. I have LOTS of examples where you're turning over even $150 or more than what you paid for. My Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box 2 as I showed earlier is going for $200+. I paid $30 for it, if I put a listing up for $230, I'll make a $200 profit just like that.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000IBWR/?tag=gtplanet-20 -Please note, OVA 3 (Which FUNimation doesn't label as the third OVA, which can confuse people into thinking it's the first.) is still in print here, it's just that OVA's 1 and 2 have been OOP for a very long time.

-Took less than 6 months to go for the price it is going for now. It sold out before release despite being $400 here from nearly 2 months of pre-order, and a few months later, it sold out in Japan. There were 800 copies brought over here, as for Japan, who knows, but by going off this (Right at the bottom.), I can make a guess at 30,000 copies as not every retailer doesn't have data get reported to Oricon. On a side-note, it sold 25,000+ copies in its first week of release in Japan.

Here's a thread listing everything that is OOP here, so you can get an idea of just how many more titles are OOP, and going for inflated prices, sometimes in the thousands. Note, many things from Bandai Entertainment and ADV Films may be listed, but are still available for now. Don't know why WTK includes many old ADV titles like Best Student Council and Azumanga Daioh which are still in print, or something like The Big O which is still out there by Bandai Entertainment.

And a few examples of where the prices were high until the shows got rescued by FUNimation. Excel Saga and FLCL for years were OOP, and going for $100+. You had to pay a pretty penny to get them.

Lastly here's what happens when a title goes into Robert's "Limited to Stock On Hand" status on Robert's Anime Corner Store.

Conversely, I'm selling basics licensing on images for 3 figures per image (and my name is nothing in the field) and can make a few hundred dollars a photo session. If I did a wedding per weekend this summer, I could make several thousand dollars. And that isn't me selling my camera gear to get money back, but if I have to sell it ever, I can gain back the investment in the equipment and possibly profit. On top of that, I can sell single prints as fine art and get several hundred percent return on material costs per print.

Face it, there is no way you can financially justify a serious anime hobby over a photography hobby. Not to mention it introduces me to a ton of people, builds a social network and develop social skills, and gives me an awesome portfolio to indicate I've traveled and so on. Which never hurts.
I never denied the fact photography can make you more money. It's a profession, anime watching has never, and never will be a profession. Sure something like playing video games can be a profession, but never anime watching. Also something like making anime can be a profession, but those animators don't make a whole lot. You yourself make WAY, WAY more money off photography right now than by being an overworked, and underpaid anime animator for a Japanese animation studio.

I was merely pointing out, many, many anime releases go up in price (As it's a niche product, and not in massive quantities.), and not for a decent amount at times, but for what many would call a small fortune. If you own all of Cardcaptor Sakura, you're sitting on top of money practically. Lots of collectors like me fear the very moment a title we want to own we still don't have goes OOP.

It's not like video games, where years later you can almost always get it for chump change. Also speaking of video games, anime video games at times can go for inflated prices as well. Look what happened to One Piece.

I do have experience working with collectibles, do you realize this? They'll laugh at me, and I'll laugh at them. As you point out, it is an incredible niche market, which means finding a buyer isn't easy generally, and selling something for the price you want is also hard when you want to sell something.

If you own all of Cardcaptor Sakura, you're sitting on top of money practically. Lots of collectors like me fear the very moment a title we want to own we still don't have goes OOP.

Sitting on money if you can sell it. It isn't like gold, you can't turn around and sell it a clearly determined market price the same day. You will have to find a buyer willing to pay that price. Then you have to consider the condition, edition, etc.

It's not like video games, where years later you can almost always get it for chump change. Also speaking of video games, anime video games at times can go for inflated prices as well. Look what happened to One Piece.

Wait, wait, video games don't appreciate in value? Have you ever seen how much NiB copies of the SNES JPRGs go for at times? Several hundred, if not thousands of dollars. Herp derp, OOP logic strikes again.

Anime isn't the only thing that has this in it. Games Workshop figurines, old Alpha and Beta MTG cards, especially ones with typos, etc. I'm sure I could dig around on the internet, use auctions, random listings, and so on, and appraise my collections at thousands of dollars. Could I actually sell it for that? No.

The issue is actually finding a buyer and getting the price indicated by value indexes, etc. Only the most rare go for large sums of money, and those rarely change hands. Kind of like fine art pieces that go for millions of dollars.

Here is the deal - you're a kid. You are thinking like a kid about how much collections are worth, citing online numbers and so on. I did the same thing at your age, so I understand. But don't think for a moment you can just sell your collection if you suddenly need money. These kind of collections don't have the demand, as they are niche items. MTG cards are far more popular than Anime, and have far more metrics and a standard index for value. Getting that money for a card is not straight forward, because it does ultimately come down to what the buyer actually values it for and what you'll actually sell it for. This applies to Anime, Figurines, Vinyls, etc. The only difference is as you move to increasingly popular things, it becomes easier to have competing buyers, and thus get the money you want.

I'm going to suggest you get in touch with reality a bit more. You clearly have an escapist problem, after mentioning your addition to video games in the past, social issues with how you present data, and a tendency to only acknowledge the information that aligns with your reality.

You're addicted to anime. So stop buying it, reading about the sales figures, or even watching it for a few weeks. Do that, and instead go meet people and interact. Or at least try. You'll start to understand where other people are coming from and maybe even see the greater scheme of things. You may claim to understand other people's views, but you don't and it is clear from you incessant linking of sales, figures, articles, and so on that no one here cares about because they don't really say anything generally. You don't know how to have a conversation - you just post "facts" as responses to questions, and then formulate almost no argument yourself.

Go. Meet. Real. People.

PS - Learn to format you links so I don't just see amazon.com.......

Hobbies aren't supposed to be a source of income. They more often than not are quite the opposite. I don't get where this discussion comes from, or what it's trying to achieve. It's just a lot of arguing over nothing.

Btw, I'm going to watch it someday. Probably long before I watch, say, Magic Knight Rayearth... :mischievous:

I'm not sure either.

At this point, I think it is more a point about not seeing the forest for the trees.

Because it's pretty bad. I could stand it in my most recent rewatch because I already knew what was gonna happen and because I'm, a freaking fanboy and because NOSTALGIA, because I watched it with the dub of my childhood lol. I'm sure everyone else in here would find it pretty lame. Heck, I found a lot of parts pretty damn lame.

If you're gonna do Rayearth, read the manga. It's the same minus like 20 episodes of filler and plot holes, and the art is Clamp's "old style" with everything shiny and all that stuff. It does a much MUCH better work of telling the story, which isn't bad, to be honest. It's nice.

Thanks for the BRS pics Andy.

Does it have "Clamp hands"? Also Rayearth is on my list but it's pretty far down.

I love this place. Especially HNNNGGGG at the first and last girl in Andy's post, but all of these are nice.

Because he doesn't want us to know this whole time Rayearth is bad

wow I guessed right AND i got tree'd

haha, yes basically. I was thinking just now that I wouldn't have gotten past like epoisode 10 or so if I was watching it first time today. I woud have dropped it like a boss. That "knowing what was gonna happen" thing was what kept me going, like with Madoka.

It's from 1993-4, dude. EVERYONE has Clamp hands and look as gay as can be, with the exception of Zagato who always looks like a freaking bad ass because he is. In fact I think that two of the very VERY very few male characters Clamp has created that aren't gay as ass are in Rayearth, Zagato and Lafarga.

Also, don't watch it. Read the manga even with clamp hands if you ever try any Rayearth.

And also, nice pic dumps you people.

-> I remember back in High School, Rayearth was epic! Especially in Tagalog!!! 👍

^ But its one of those animes I'll watch again if I have a girlfriend on my side (if she likes the series).

OMFGHEADEXPLODES

Did you watch Rayearth, Vanishing? You'd be the third guy here that did. Yes back in the day it was pretty spectacular but if you rewatch it today you'll find a lot of, erm, stuff in it. And yup, I rewatched it recently with my wife, who was also a hardcore Rayearth fan back in the day. Heck, that's more or less why we met in the first place.

^ Yes, I've watched Rayearth back in the day (maybe 10-15 years ago), it was a fun series although it was too Shojou-ish (ie. girly) sometimes, but at te same time I was watching Sailormoon too. :boggled:
