Am I right in assuming we can't use the Race Number or Windscreen Banner presets in the game? Ie. Take one of the race cars and use the in-game defaults for those, but the actual livery and any other sponsors all come from hand-crafted squares and circles???

Clarity please??

The game shows how many different decals have been used. I was already used all 400 body layers and posting the Audi when I realized i had used a ready number board and forgot it. Then I had to scroll back and forth and edit the 400 pieces to make space for making the eleven signs.

This is exactly the workflow I'm working through at the moment. So laborious! I was asking for clarity on the matter because there's no stipulation in the main rule set which says built-in number boards, windscreen banners and driver names are allowed or not. If the built-in stuff was allowed it would create so much more scope to create a race-ready livery - all the decals used on race numbers could be put into another pair of sponsor decals, for example. But I'm happy to trudge through and complete my livery with the basic shapes.

So the first thing I thought when I read "work of art" and using square and circle decals only was something along the lines of Mondrian geometric art. And when I think of Mondrian art, I think of the 60s and Austin Powers' Swinging London, and jumped to the Mini. However, after a couple of practice runs I realized trying to get the grids for something Mondrian-esque to line up over the entire car was going to be a pain. However, I still liked the thought of something 60s-ish on a Mini so I took some LSD came up with a psychedelic color palette and just kind of went Jackson Pollock on my poor Mini. I did this completely by applying square and circle decals, no skewing at all (except for the license plate).

So, the prompt literally says “there will be no sponsors” and “the car should be a piece of art” , I think most are straying pretty far from the prompt. Not trying to be difficult, but is the direction the entries are moving in correct?

I took that as meaning we couldn’t use pre-made sponsor decals, but we could create our own! Perhaps I was wrong, if so then my entry will have to be withdrawn :guilty:

"Stencils" are your friend! I just found a version of the logo I wanted and then used it as a stencil for the logo and shaped the squares and circles as needed... Don't get me wrong, it was a time consuming and tedious process.
I "stole" decals from people in Forza doing this.

I remember the starting round (or was it the second round? I forget) in Gran Turismo Sport we had this one guy who absolutely hated that he couldn't use usermade decals/standard ones, and made a big deal out of it. It's fun to have that challenge once in a while.

Which reminds me of a different challenge. Why on earth do we not have a helmet round? :D (or did I miss something in my absence?)

Since it is my birthday I'm allowed to be corrupted today: vote for me in this round, let me win, and we'll have a helmet only round

Every part of me wants to take part in this round but im struggling

Initial idea was Travis Pastranas plaid effect hoonigan Subaru station wagon - just loads of squares and lines right - realised I'd run out of decals way too early

Hopefully something else will come to mind before the deadline

Can we get clarification on this, @sturk0167?

I personally took this to mean it doesn't have to be a race car, but not that it cannot be a race car. That said, my entry which is still WIP is half art car, half race car. It'll be simple enough to remove all the sponsors (although the amount of decals to delete is substantial!) and it'll still be presentable enough to enter. There's zero chance of my entry winning though - some of the entries in this round are simply outstanding!

@syntex123 we have almost the same birthday - mine was yesterday...

Just my two cents...

Genuine art cars have raced with number boards and sometimes sponsors in the real world - I don't think being an art car should exclude things like number boards (made with squares and circles), or something that would be passed off a series sponsor decal (made with squares and circles).

This is already a tricky LEC, not that that's a bad thing, it's inspired me to start a couple of other liveries too, but I don't think we want to be too exclusionary - especially given the time that goes into something like this. If voters don't think a livery is in the spirit of the LEC, they can always vote accordingly.

Like I say, just my two cents.

I'd agree with that.
Ultimately I think people vote for whoever they think got the feel of the theme right
and while I wouldn't exclude sponsored race cars I don't think that was the vibe this theme was going for.

Both types of livery have taken their respective creators hours to get the way they wanted.

It's always something that strikes me when I go through the polls.
You'll inevitably see a livery and think "oh that's the one. That perfectly suits this theme".
To a large extent the winner is always one of those entries.

Same with mine, half art car, half race car. I'd say keep yours as you make it, don't remove what you already spent time on doing. :D
I didn't put sponsors on mine but indicated that it would have them, and probably will later. But then again it's not 100% complete either because of the layer limit

Happy belated birthday to the both of us :D

The intention was for no sponsor decals to be used. I guess it's fine for people to fabricate a logo lookalike with the two available decals. I just wasn't expecting it.
I think some folks just can't make themselves do a non-racecar livery.
If I can manage to graft out a non-racecar livery then anyone can.

I have mixed feelings about recreating logos for this theme. On one hand it’s impressive what can be done with such simple shapes (and so much time), but on the other hand it’s only impressive if you know what the restrictions were. If you don’t know it, then it’s just a logo and not very exciting - unless the logo is essential for the livery, like for example the post-it logo which I think fits the theme well due to the square nature of the product.
