the "just plain ugly" car thread

bug eye = ****, there is a reason MANY people did the conversion to the next model year. If i owned that car I'd probably pay someone to take it outta my hands.

I don't think, that the Impreza was ever very good looking, the appeal of it always came from the performance instead of the looks. It's not extremely ugly, though, so it's not a great thing to post here.
Yes this thread is for cars that look like the Yourubian Puma thing...the Impreza is not a bad looking car.

The Tata magic iris. Possibly the worst car name I've ever heard.

Wow, I thought it was pretty much universally-accepted that bugeye Imprezas were ugly, but it looks like I might be overestimating the prevalence of my own opinions.

Something I don't recall being posted yet: the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. It's a shame that what was a fairly handsome sedan had to become such an eyesore during its 'hybrid-ization'.

Hybrid.

Non-hybrid.

I believe China will get it right (car design) some day.

The most legitimate candidate for this to happen first with is Hongqi, China's Rolls Royce.

They have heritage, a somewhat unique design language and a good image for quality and luxury.

These DONT look ugly...

This. They just need to find their own style like the Japanese once had to.

Exactly, early global Japanese cars were visually often knockoffs of American and European cars then they found their own unique look. South Korea has gone through the same thing then become popular and it will also happen with China.

I'm going to disagree with you on this, but the two other cars are quite good looking actually. I mean, not great, but not nearly as bad as some other cars.

The first one is a concept so it will probably be toned down for production but yeah they produce the most respectable looking chinese cars at the moment.

Honestly, the third chinese car looks like an attempt to modernize a GAZ 21.

Anyway, i decided to get a bit more into what causes uglyness to be in cars.
And first of all, i believe that badge placement can make or break a car.
Take for example, the Chevy Aveo Hatchback:
chevrolet_aveo_hatchback_1280x1024.jpg

While better than the 2008 version, it is not exactly the most beautiful car. And yes, i hate the license plate of the one in the picture.
Holden however, moved the badge to one of the two sensible spots, the grille.

Hey, its not exactly not-bland. Just a bit less ugly if you ask me.

Ocasionally, there is Badge Engineering lazyness, or changing the style of a car too much, or introducing a different market to said style too late..
Chevrolet Cruze 2009 is similar to Chevy Cruze 2015

Holden Cruze 2015 just takes the Chevy version and slaps a Holden badge to it. Even though the '09 Holden had a different front.

And thats why Aussies posted that Holden in here. Probably.

Then there is the Famous Multipla, which seems like its trying to mix two concept cars into a fusion. You don't just make two cars out of one car, man. I mean, thats like Unspoked rule number 1 of car design.
Fiat_Multipla_1999_BiPower.jpg

But also, theres modernization of a car, which can be done in a good way or in a bad way.
And i don't like the New Beetle. Hey uh Mr New Beetle, you shoulda done that look Earlier in the '90s. '98 is a tad too late for the bubbly theme.

And of course, disproportionate features on cars. Pontiac Aztek, Nissan Juke, you name it.
But i call them Mr. Its-existence-slowly-started-to-kill-Pontiac and Sir Controversialface.
Oh, and the black plastic bits have something to do with the Aztek too.

I agree on all of those. Though I'd say the Beetle and the Cruze are just dreadfully boring. It's annoying how many people in America bought the Nissan Juke.

What is the difference between programming a 3D printer to make a car and programming some robotic arms to make a car? Apart from construction material but you could give the robot arms almost any material and still programme them to make things out of it.

Is there a real difference?

Much lower manufacturing costs and fewer limitations in terms of design complexity on top of that. Robotic arms may work perfectly on mass production lines. But they can't match the same level of detail you'd get by hand-crafting materials even today. You do pay a premium for that sort of service however, whereas 3D printing is far less costly and a considerably quicker process overall.

Chances are we'd see less toned-down styling between concept and production vehicles if such intricate detailing could be recreated cheaply and in bulk, too.

The E36 Compact didn't look very bad, and the E46 wasn't going to be awful either, but then they thought that regular E46 headlights were worse the ones they ended up with. I'm not sure how though, probably because none of the regular BMW designers were working when it was on the drawing board.

I'll take a Merc over a Bimmer any day, but they too can do wrong:

I love the design, but I'll post it here so I can see what you guys think. Panoz Abruzzi.

These next few cars are properly ugly.

And of course, it's always fun to pick on Chinese cars.
