The Kujira Crown (Might not sell it!)

We were thinking of a custom exhaust manifold, but there just isn't enough room in the engine bay as we thought there would be... Either way we look at it, the Crown would need a new steering rack to fit the motor.

At the moment, it's not really my friends and I getting kicked out of the shop, but more of the fact that there's new rules set that will cause trouble for our group. My friend's parents only want a max of 4 people at the shop and we can only work on the weekends until 11PM... They also want the majority of the cars moved out of the shop yard, although my Crown will likely be staying. (Kicking out a 240Z, rare two-tone 240SX coupe, and another 240SX coupe)

Awww man, sorry to here this. :guilty::(

I hope you and your friends can get that connection from that shop in New Hampshire. If not, can you keep the Crown at your house until you can find a solution?

Unfortunately, the 1UZ does not fit...in the engine bay. The exhaust manifold will hit the steering rack.

However, worst of all is the problems that we've run into. More of a family problem for my friend who has the shop. So we're getting kicked out... With this and the fact that I don't have a job anymore, I'm not too sure the Crown will be able to stay. It really was a stupid idea of choosing this as a project car...but mistakes have already been made. I plan on selling this and the 1UZ seperately and hopefully getting money to find myself a new fun car or my own daily that isn't under my parents' name. Of course, I'll be trying to find a job, even though it probably won't pay as well as my previous one. :(

Edit: At the moment, I'm unsure of how things will go, but there's still a chance I can keep the Crown. On the other hand, the 1UZ will definitely be sold off. My friends have a connection with a tuning shop in New Hampshire and recently, that shop has started to sell motors. So I believe I might try to get a 1JZ-GTE off of them.
Custom headers would resolve the "manifold" issue AND give you more hp. However the lack of job and the family issue sound like they are the bigger issue. Sorry to hear that. But to resolve the issue of the manifold, go with headers. Hope this helps and good luck.

Sad to hear the car might have to go. Try to keep it even if you have to sell off the mechanical bits. You can get another powetrain down the line, but finding another Crown might prove a bit more challenging.

This.

Sorry to hear about the lack of a job and the workshop drama's. Hopefully you'll find a solution soon. Best of luck with it. 👍

To me it sounds like a very good excuse to go rack & pinion rather than scrapping the idea... But hey.

We were thinking of doing a rack and pinion conversion but it's probably more work than we need at these times. We were also thinking of doing custom headers, but we weren't too sure about that either.

I'll try my best to keep the Crown, but the 1UZ will probably have to go. I've looked through several forums (Especially Crown forums) and people have tried to do a 1UZ swap, but have failed due to the space. So...I'll probably be looking into the 1JZ-GTE now. Good news is that I could maybe get $3k for the motor, tranny, harness, and all the other parts that I've got for it.

Things aren't looking good for my ownership of the Toyota Crown... After losing my job and not having much of a reason to drive the Accord anymore, my brother's been using it to drive to his work. (Parents bought him a Suzuki SX4 AWD to share with our uncle who has since been using the '03 Camry, but the Camry's had problems so my uncle left it to us to fix it.)

Anyways, this morning my brother was commuting to work. Stopped at a light and a driver in a first gen Acura TL wasn't paying attention and going 60MPH. Rear ending the Honda Accord and causing it to get pushed into a Nissan Pathfinder in front of it. Anyways, here's pictures of it at the yard before it gets sent off for scrap.

Triple post... X_x At this rate... I will have to sell the Toyota Crown.

I'm not too sure about this...but I might be looking into Miatas. And so far this one's been of interest. Not a fan of the silver or trunk rack, but considering that it's at 105k miles and ISN'T one of the usual New England Miatas that has 120k+ miles for $4k... It looks good. Although I'd have to travel some ways to get it.

If I had the option (and the money, plus the time) I'd buy the Crown if you were selling it... but I have neither of those.

Some good(ish?) news! Despite getting...quite close to selling the Crown to a guy in NYC. Things have...slightly changed. I might end up keeping the Crown. Since my parents don't like any of the choices that I've looked at for a daily driver, they said they might just buy a car "for the family" (not entirely sure about the meeting, but in Vietnamese culture...everything has to involve the family...) so I could have something to drive to college. Rather than using my own money to find a daily. But on the other hand, I do have a concern that they'll be too indecisive to find a vehicle for me in time for school starting. (And there really is no buses in my town to take me there...)

Insurance at the moment is a bit of a concern for me. And if they can't find a daily for me in time, I might just try to go with my own car and convince them to allow me to find my own car and work to rebuild my budget for my Crown. Keep the daily stock for...a long time...with some work here and there.

At the moment...been looking at MX83 Cressida's. I've got two friends who tell me that I should avoid 20 year old cars, especially during the winter. But I've had several others approve of the choice. This is the only decent example (a tad pricey, but I'll try an offer):

Rust free (I'd feel bad subjecting a rust free car to Maine's salted roads), 93k miles, A/C doesn't work, and owner's had it for 20 years. Opinions?

That's good news! If that Cressida's as solid as it appears, it should last you several more winters with minimal maintenance.

This is some good news Kevin! I'm glad you can keep the Crown, just keep persuading your parents about this Toyota, but still check it out first. Hope everything works out. 👍

That's a relief for me to hear that you could still keep your Crown without giving up with that too, hope they might see better fit to purchase one for you for commuting to school. 👍

Had a look at the Cressida today and it turned out alright, but there were too many negatives with it that overshadowed the positives... It'd be more of a project than a daily and the owner wanted too much and wouldn't go any lower. So...looks like I'll have to let my parents find a car. Or better yet, throw in my suggestions of what I could get.

At the moment my parent's budget is $9k. Of course...they want the car to be an automatic and cheap on insurance. That's all they gave me as their criteria for what they want to get. Any suggestions?

You could try for a nice LS400. There should be some nicer pines on your price range. V8, rearwheel drive, comfy, auto, and reliable. You would still have a cruiser, just with less style.

$9k would buy you one of the best LS400s, hell, you could find a really sketchy LS430 for that. There should also be a decent selection of good Acura Legends, Infiniti Q45s, GS300s and Acura RLs for that budget. Maximas, ES300s and I30s are a good bet as well.

I would like to get an LS400, but I doubt I could convince them about the V8... Parents seem to approve more of the usual Camry, Corolla, Civic, Accord, or Altima. Maxima's have come to mind too. But I have managed to have them eye a couple Acura's. One of which is this Acura RL:

Might be beige, but definitely an upgrade over the Accord.

Feeling a tad impatient...but they haven't replied for two days now from my email. :grumpy:

GS300s also come to mind, but I've still had the concern of maintanence with the luxury marks.

-get money from parents
-buy something cheaper, way cheaper
-sink remaining money into 70s car
-wep
-profit

Unfortunately I'll never be able to touch that money since the car will be purchased under their name. I can only throw out suggestions to them. Never got the $5k for the Accord when it was scrapped since it was under my dad's name.

-not get money from parents
-eat badly for weeks
-sell unnecesary stuff
-keep the car
-wep
-profit

Still have it, the project will hopefully be starting up again after a bunch of 🤬 happened in life. I don't plan on ditching it or selling it. Sitting at my friend's shop with his 180SX waiting to be worked on again.
