The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Mid Ohio isn't the most balanced of tracks though, is it?

Pretty tight and twisty.
Yeah, and when you look at the Road America times the GT1 C6.R was doing 2.00:xx and the DPs are doing 2.05:xxx.
DP's have a weight and aero advantage though.

Yes they do but still loose a lot of times, probably thank's to the tires they run.

There's no reason DP's shouldnt have like 700 bhp. Same weight, same tyres, same aero. They're shaped like bullets...

So, new wings, new engine, and give them a set of LMP tires?

One of the reasons I don't like P1 class disappearing is that, you can see in WEC it's where manufacturers put the most innovation and money. Audi/Pug/Toyota, in recent memory. The Hondas are freaking amazing as well. P2 is cheaper, but is there the same level of innovation, do you guys think? I don't see it, but maybe you can correct me. I know for instance that Honda HPDs are also in the P2 category. But it seems the technology was more or less there to compete on a P1 level. But if I am right, maybe the disappearance of P1 will force teams and their innovation into P2.

It's sad to me that American companies interest in Prototype racing seems to be centered on the DP, which is in effect not forward thinking in the least. Yes there are the GT cars, but if there is no real interest and innovation in prototype as well, why keep it around?

Maybe I'm being too ignorant on the subject. School me :D

A bit more complex than that, they'll want a carbon fiber tub and the advanatages that come with a lighter weight car.

The innovation, the exotic material and the quest for speed is still there in LMP2. The main difference is there is not the crazy over the top spending of finding a tenth on the wind tunnel at the cost of 100,000 dollars.
You could in theory take an LMP2 HPD chassis and throw a couple more hundred HP and have relatively competitive times over a single lap, but over the lenght of a race those millions of extra dollars thrown at the works LMP1 car will walk away with the cake.

Where do you draw the line? Sentimentally the kid in me wants to see unlimited technology and resources thrown at a car to extract every last tenth off of it.
The grown man in me want's to see a stable and competitive sport with huge fields of cars with all the exitement of close racing, this is one of the advantages that comes with cost capped series/classes.
After 20+ years of beign involved in one way or another or closely following motorsports I've seen series come and go and fall victim of the silly spending that manufacturers bring into the sport.
So yeah, I like the LMP2 formula a lot!

Lucas Ordoñez - the gamer, the couch racer, the PR boy from Sony Playstation - has now been re-classified (by the FIA Endurance Commitee) as a GOLD driver.

Amazing.

Spooky start up system. Definitely sounds way more appealing than the Audis.

It is awesome that it goes from RC car sounding to Racecar sound just like that, but I think The E-Tron Quattro actually sounds cool. I've sometimes reffered to it as the starship.

Great news to hear 👍

Not to take away from it, but it's not as much of an accomplishment as it may seem.

Qualifications for each category varies. Platinum status is awarded to drivers who have either competed in Formula 1, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright, have finished in the top-10 in a major open-wheel championship or is currently or has previously been a factory driver.

Gold ranking is achieved by having competitive experience in international karting or professional open-wheel championships; or being Platinum-grade but of ages 55-59, while the Silver and Bronze categories are primarily reserved for young drivers with less experience, as well as gentlemen drivers.

So basically as long as you have some experience you will be a Gold classified driver.

Not sure where to post it but since it's rumours for GTE class, i guess i just pass it here.

While it might not be a lifetime achievement, it is certainly something to be proud of considering that 6 years ago he was just a gamer.

Where did I say it wasn't something to be proud of?

Just thought that it needed some clarity as to why exactly he was being put into the Gold category.

I don't think this has been posted, but it's an onboard of the Toyota TS030 at Goodwood FOS

Man, that TS030 is a beast! Start sounds like a 1:10 RC until the monster comes out of the engine and turning, no better, mutating into a racecar that's ready to rip up the track! Amazing!

Not bad Lucas. Congrats dude, you're really living the dream and becoming a legend. ;)👍

Edit:

@Justin: Thanks for the clarification on the GOLD driver info and the qualifications. Lucas, is on his way, especially with this honor. I wonder about Vettel, since he's another impressive driver at his age, like Lucas.

And MOAR on the LFA and Lotus!!!

But also with all the specs? Because these are new to me. I know the pictures were posted when it was revealed.

Admittingly, we didn't get the specs the first time but it was of course in renders (and I think a windtunnel model as well, though that might have been weeks after).
