The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

I said it before...
They are releasing a new LMP2 T128 made in house for next season. There is already 2 orders for it in WEC and a rumored 3rd car for ALMS ran by Dempsey.
On top of that, the car is made with 2014 LMP(1) regulations in mind as well. Engine options are up in the air. It's like the other chassis builders with a variety of different engine choices. Judd, Nissan, BMW, HPD (honda) etc.

I think any team that buys one of the Lotus LMP2 cars has to be brain dead. They aren't exactly known for supporting their customers and you need some kind of support if you are running an LMP program.

I said it before...

While I relize that, this is Lotus we're talking about. As Justin pointed out, support hasn't been their Strong suit (As Dale Coyne and Alex Job can atest to). I'm still quite skeptical about this.

Wait, LMP2 now will be eligible for LMP1 in 2014?
Or am I reading that wrong?
Because that would REALLY change some of my theories regarding the merger.

I don't believe so. Lotus just made their R18 so they can switch over to the new regs with minimal effort.

Driver re-classifications are being debated with a lot of heat. Apparently, upgrading the good gentleman drivers to Gold is bad for them.

If anyomne here follows John Dagys on twitter, you'll notice lots of tweets about it. But this is what started the debate:

The driver ranking process is a little scary for gentlemen driving in LMP2. If you get bumped from silver to gold, you're really 🤬 .

@dhhracing What happens when you hit gold?

Mike Hedlund ‏@mike_hedlund
@dhhracing same in GT classes. shame to get penalized for all the hard work when you have no intentions or hope of getting paid to do it.

Michael Sorensen ‏@leminko11
@dhhracing u should listel to radio le mans midweek radio show their words

Michael Sorensen ‏@leminko11
@dhhracing a suggestion would be that am drivers should not be able to be gold... no matter how good you are

Toni Calderon ‏@tonicalderon
@dhhracing i agree, if its your hobby and you are paying, you shouldn't be encouraged NOT to go fast.

I'm interested in the new honking holes rules the ACO adopted: Either have them on the top of the fenders, or on the interior ala Toyota GT-One.

TS020...Have you returned?

It really is a bad situation for the teams and drivers, this will also affect the next series. Eventhough the Grand Am guys don't have a Pro-Am class 80% of their teams are in fact made of Pro-Am combos. Once the series are united those drivers will be classed and licensed by the ACO. This is bad because a lot of the teams because a lot of their funds come fro the Am drivers who are no longer Amateurs and can not compete as such but are not fast enough to keep up with the pros. Really really bad situation right now...

It's not an R18 copy. It's more TS030 copy from the drawings. Funny thing is the lead guy in terms of design is a former Toyota F1 aero personnel.

Is it actually a Lotus? Or just Lotus stickers?

Bit of a can of worms here. Its more of a Lotus than any of the other race cars out there bar the Evora.
But its still not really a Lotus, as its been designed by Kodewa. Its still really a name-branding exercise. Its just that its been designed as a result of Lotus sponsorship, rather than Lotus just sponsoring an existing car/team.

To be fair though, if we want to get picky about whether manufacturers are really just sticking their name on things, a lot of manufacturer participation is simply putting their name on things, not just with Lotus.
For example, Audi are actually the Joest team, Chevrolet engines in Indycar are actually re-badged Illmor engines, etc.

The problem isn't just because of Lotus being on a car, its that the actual involvement they do have often involves little to no support and the Sponsorship (in Sportscar anyway) tends to be just a rebranding of the entire team and car. If Lotus was just a logo on the Rebellion Lola Toyota, it wouldn't be a problem. If it was a Lotus Supported rebranding (Like Chevy with the ilmor engines or Audi's paid sub-contracting to various companies), that wouldn't be a problem either. I myself am skeptical because I'm wondering if this is actually Lotus actually supporting something or if this is yet another unsupportive badge job.

Read this http://www.lemans.org/en/races/24h/update/exclusive-the-new-lotus-lm-p2_9127.html. Lotus didn't choose them. They chose Lotus. And yes Kolles is still in charge.

I'm curious what changes Dallara and Joest will make to the R18 this year. A more Toyota-like rear wing I reckon for later in the season.

The ruling was changed so that only LMP1 teams can make a 'Toyota rear wing' for 2013. LMP2 it's written out of the rules.

Thanks for the correction, but I thought the rules haven't changed actually. It's just that the ACO won't do anything about the loophole that Toyota found?

More than 10 years old now!:dopey:

I feel old at 23 all of a sudden.👎

They made a specific adjustment to the wording for 2013. It involves the fenders and how high they can and can't go. LMP2 can not make their fender 'arch' high like the Toyota.

Speaking of the fenders, they also said the honking holes can either be on the top or on the inside like the GT-One.

Really interesting point of development.

Not to change the discussion but............

Lime Rock has added the World Challenge series to the July 4th weekend.

Sounds effing great to me. 👍

One of the best, most exciting touring car championships in the world has committed to coming to Lime Rock next year, as part of the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix July 4, 5 & 6: The SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge Championship.
