The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

I get to go see the ALMS race at Laguna Seca with my college's Formula SAE team. :D We're going on Wednesday to see the pits and practice sessions and then again on race day. Will be my first time at an event like this.

What college? Are you brining the car too, or are you just watching?

Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Just watching. We got a spot to show the car in the LA auto show next time around though.

Oh awesome. My mate is going to Cal Poly in the fall and wants to do that.

If you wanna meet up or something, hit me up. Maybe make a GTP sign haha jk.

Laguna is a fantastic track. Even if it takes half an hour to climb that 🤬 hill to get to the corkscrew!

I find it enlightening how many pro drivers down-talk the corkscrew. It's undeniably been the spot of a lot of historic hair-raising maneuvers, but it seems that 90% of the time, from the driver's perspective it's just a really slow corner, notable because it stands out from the rest of the track.

A bad setup will lead to all kinds of spins here, at least from when I've raced there. But if you've got enough ride height and a stable low-gear traction (needed for the final corner), it's not so bad.

Going side-by-side in an intense, battle, however...

Not good. I dislike BoP but I can understand Toyota has good reason to complain if the feel they've got no chance to be competitive with the current rules for diesel-petrol equivalence.

If one can just ask to turn the Audi down, why couldn't Aston Martin circa 2008-09 do the same? Audi deserves some advantage for using diesel, in the same way that both Audi and Toyota have an advantage over the rest of the P1 field due to the Hybrid power.

I don't get why the ACO won't make the diesel engines the same capacity as the petrol engines. Like what many people have been yelling at them to do for years.

I have a lot more of everything if anyone wants to see. I got mostly video of the actual driving with one big spin down the corkscrew too. :P

I am still very divided on this. I do believe the ACO wants and always wanted true balance. However, poor Pescarolo never got a chance. Was it because Audi could use millions over billions against what was essentially a privateer? Or was it because there was no balance between diesel and petrol regs?

Then came Peugeot, and the issue became irrelevant, both main contenders, both of them manufacturers and R&D giants ... used diesel cars.

During the Audi vs Peugeot years no petrol LMP1 cars stood any chance and no manufacturer would REALLY back a petrol team. Highcroft's 2nd place at Sebring with an HPD gave fans some hope but it proved a one-off probably helped by chance or a strange alignment of the planets or both.

Now, Toyota made a risky gamble. They believed the latest revision of the regs would give petrol cars with hybrid power a chance. And tbh, last year proved them right.

So, what's happening now? Is it that Audi felt menaced and "upped" their game once again, spending another gazillion euros from their very deep pockets, and Toyota isn't able to follow suit (or doesn't want to)? Or is it that Toyota made a bad car? Should we go for a RRA in Endurance? Or BoP? I think any of these options will "kill" endurance racing as the current pinnacle of motorsports engineering in all areas bar aerodynamics. So I don't like them. But ... fans will fade away if there's no real competition fopr outright wins. And nobody wants that.

Mad respect to Audi to winning all those Le Mans, but sometimes I think that a lot of those wins come down to having the innate superiority of more power due to a bigger engine. Outside of Toyota, no other petrol powered LMP1 come close to keeping up with the Audi's let alone beat them.

I don't think Toyota has made a bad car, just an unreliable one at the moment. If anything the ACO would probably give them a bigger air restricter to compensate. No need for wild changes in the middle of a racing season, and that the new 2014 engine regs come into affect next season I think Toyota would be better served to bite their tongue and try a fresh approach in 2014.

Or ACO can actually make diesels same capacity as the biggest petrol engine. This is a criticism that stems all the way back to 2006.

Not really convinced by that, I'm actually pretty sure that isn't the problem. Toyota can actually run 2 laps more, and they were faster last year at Le Mans. I really do think if they work on their reliability it'll be a good fight 👍

In my opinion reliability and safe running are so much more important than overall speed. 2011 is a good example of that... if Audi had only run 2 cars they wouldn't have won (obviously) and as long as toyota can get the reliability issues sorted they're in with a good chance. 24 hours is a long time and lots can happen!

Well, let's see what Toyota can engineer to counter this supposed "extra" horsepower that the Audi's are running. I'm sure they'll make a capacitor with extra juice in it by June.

They need to figure out those overheating brake issues. Hopefully they were just faulty due to manufacturing.

Rebellion on pole@Seca. I think the real story is Guy Smith in the Dyson Mazda, though, stealing second place away from Muscle Milk. And he was within about half a second of Rebellion's time. With MM's reliability problems, Maybe Mazda has a chance at some extra points tomorrow.

Ferrari pole for GT.

I think Colin Braun poled for LMPC.

I forget who took pole in P2, probably Level 5.

No idea about GTC.

Guy Smith is a fantastic driver, better than the Dyson team deserves quite frankly. I think the MM will easily pass them in the race though, I don't think it will be unreliable. Not like the Mazda is known for its reliability. It so far has accumulated 0 points in the Driver and Team Championships.

Currently in the grandstands on the straight. It's only warmup, but the DeltaWing spanked the ESM guys up the straight...

Also interesting to see Rebellion running the Rear-Fender wing solution. Neither Dyson or Muscle Milk have anything of the sort.
