The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Now, as a wrap-up from Monterey, I'll leave these here...

Prior to getting there, I saw that Wyvern posted pics of a TRG Aston with Rolex badges on the side. I was a bit bummed, until on the day of the race I saw this...

Note that the Rolex badges were either removed, or... is this a GTE-spec Aston? I couldnt tell, and thought that it didnt have nearly enough witchery going on around the side exhaust. I did find it odd, however, that it appears to be sitting on a set of Pirellis...

So someone else make the call, but if ti DOES turn about to be the TRG GTE car, you heard it here first.

(Sorry for the iPhone 5 pics, both DSLR batteries failed to be charged before being placed in my bag that day.)

I think that's the GT3 Vantage, or what at least could've been a GTD class car had the class gone full GT3.

So, I was havign a think whilst in the Perrinn thread and...

What about a success ballast for P1? And rather than doing it by driver or individual car, do it by team. For example, if Audi win and Toyota get 2nd and 3rd, give all 5 (3 Audi's and 2 Toyota's) a success ballast each time. Eventually, Rebellion and Honda/Strakka will get competitive, and start challenging for wins. Once equilibrium has been found, hold the weights, and let the best driver/car combination win.

A great idea, but that would chap some Audi and Toyota butt. They spent the extra money on the cars so that they could buy a championship. That would lead to a lot of sandbagging and probably the departure or Audi, Toyota, or both.

Jim France To Wave Starting Flag At 24 Hours Of Le Mans 👍

Jim France, “I will wave the flag to start next month’s 24 Hours of Le Mans on behalf of the entire North American sports car community. It demonstrates the universal interest in the consolidation of America’s two leading road racing organizations."

Good to see Rossi getting in there. Always love seeing Americans in an international motorsport.

3 liters extra? Well maybe they can run a bit more rich, and quit complaining about the 30 hp advantage that Audi has.

RACECAR

That's great! It's time that we see Americans at LeMans and F1. I read the recent article in Road and Track about Rossi doing a time attack with the ZR1 and a Lotus F1 car on COTA. After seeing his impressive times on the track. This guy have skills and can drive.

Glad he getting every chance in the world of motorsports. 👍

If you scroll past the Perinn article, you'll see an explanation of Audi's EBD, as well as the Exhaust exists which are behind the wheels.
Maybe someone more technically inclined can explain it?

What I understand from the article is simply that the exhaust exits in the wheel well and the expulsion of the gasses from that point prevents the disturbed air (vortex caused by the rotation of the wheel) from entering the underside of the car and causing aero problems. But has also been crafted in such a way that it is a constituent part of the underfloor. :indiff:

I could be massively wrong though. :dopey:

It don't work that way. Running 'rich' won't net you any gains relative to a diesel. The diesel is turbocharged for one, has a bigger engine for two and has better economy for three! Air restricted atmospheric engines rely on just that- AIR to make more power. Audi has the luxury of turbocharging to make more power. And the diesel fuel which has a much higher energy density than petroleum. 3 liters won't even give you a whole lap around LeMans anyway! It's more like an insurance policy that Toyota will (continue) to go further on fuel than Audi. They went 2 almost 3 laps further than Audi at Spa, but Spa is around 7 km. So it's already a stretch to go 13+km further at LeMans since cars will be trimmed on downforce anyway.

EDIT: Almost forgot, the Privateer lmp1 teams (Rebellion and Strakka) also get 3 LITERS extra fuel for a tank size of 83 liters 👍

^ Seems that Dome has shrunken the dorsal thins on their 2014 LMP1, probably to comply with the new rules & regulations, imo.

The fins have to be a certain minimum size, they probably went with the smallest they could. DOME announced that the cars looks will change. The sidepods look great imo. The undercut is great for aero purposes. This is common on F1 cars to help airflow through the car to the rear. You can see in the cfd model the accelerated air flow from the front wing out in front of the sidepods. The undercut is less draggy and with the 2014 regs allowing a wing on the front between the wheel wells, youll need to have air flowing through there in high volume for more downforce.

Peugeot, for some reason I didn't like them...

Boo! How can you not like Peugeot!

Anyway, I doubt an extra 3 litres will make any difference. It's been an obvious fact for quite a while (as in, since about 2007) that diesels have far too large an advantage over petrol cars at Le Mans. Although Toyota are running surprisingly close, they should really be cutting something more like 10 litres rather than 3, if anything just to ensure there's an actual race. Although I hope Toyota have something up their sleeve, I can't help but feel that Audi are going to have an easy time of it this year... :grumpy:

Off topic but on the Mulsanne's Corner FB page trying to figure out what this is, someone says it showed up in a google search for Toyota's. Reminds me of a Dome Zero from 1980 but the rear aero suggests a long tail and those flicks remind me of a 917. Any idea what this is?

Apparently picture was taken in Japan.

Any idea as to what year that is from? Might help me in solving that mystery.
