The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Theyre continuing with Toyota power next year, the relation between Oreca and Toyota is pretty solid as is the relation between Rebellion and Toyota. Now theyll use a new bespoke Oreca chassis. All in the family!

So the bodykit on the Caterham is also on the regular Zytek:

And Corvette C7R debuts next year.

Buying cars is one thing, but building one entirely is whole different game.

Wonder how deep the pockets of Rebellion Racing are.

Gonna miss the old nose on the Zytek, that was around for a long while (Since 2002 if I recall).

2002? If an F1 car was using a 2002 car with the current V8s, they'd struggle to get within 107% of the pole lap!

Yep.

Obviously its had some bits of revision, but overall still retained the look.

Sorry for the noobish question, but are Lola Aston still around? If not, what happened to them?

The Lola Aston was leased to Muscle Milk in the ALMS for a single season in 2011. The next year, it was made mostly obsolete with the regs. It wasn't far off, but the body accommodated the 6 Liter V12. Since the engines were supposed to be smaller, it would have been silly to retro-fit a AM V8, which had never been put in a LMP car. Additionally, they would have had to fit a large dorsal fin, as well as cutting some holes in the fender. Probably more, but still.

In the WEC/ILMC, Aston had dropped the Lola in favor of the AMR-One, an in-house design, which turned out to be a flop. They quickly pulled the remaining chassis not already in use by MM out of storage (In a museum, I believe), and sent it to the ALMS for a single round at Laguna Seca, to compete along side the Muscle Milk car, to shake it down again in preparation for Petit Le Mans. Driven by factory drivers Stefan Mucke, Harold Primat, and Adrian Fernandez, that was the last race win for the Lola Aston Martin. It went on to finish 3rd behind the Peugeot and Oreca-Peugeot at Petit. To my knowledge, that was the last time the car was raced.

The Lola Aston was good, but was always overshadowed by the massive budgets of Peugeot and Audi.

The AMR-One was garbage, and was used a year later as the Pescarolo chassis. It was also total trash.

So no, it isn't. But their GT team is doing work right now...

I love the sound of that engine.
It had a great harmony to it.

The Grand-Am RX-8 was great too, but in a raw way.
I don't think we've seen one since Daytona.

Yea. Mazda quit supporting the car for the skyactiv d in the gx class. This guy was not happy about that at all.

Lame move by Mazda and lame move by GA for making a class just for them...

I miss the RX-8, it was badass. I think GX would be a little better if it had more than 3 cars..

What sucks even more is that it will force it's way into the new series too... Dissapointed with Mazda for not having a pair and going straight to the top class, they could have easily gone to DP or even P2!

It was very uneventful with 6 cars at Daytona especially when all 3 Mazdas went out after about 2 hours.

Very easily indeed. Of course, both the rx8 and the mazda 6 are prep 2 tube frame chassis.

A Rotary powered DP or LMP2 would be sweet  Realistically though there was no reason the Skyactiv couldn't run in one of the two, weren't they linked to Dempsey and his now defunct LMP2 program?

Speedsource is basically Mazda factory. Dempsey had something to do with it though. Hopefully we'll see a rotary rx7 gte program with a P class bodywork plus engine :)

I want to see that car come to GT-E along with the new NSX!

Compass 360 has showed interest in a gtd nsx. Not sure how much extra funding is needed though. Karl Thompson hasn't said too much.

Last I checked, Coulda sworn Mazda was still developing a P2 version of its skyactiv Diesel Engine.

And that backfired when Dempsey had a falling out with Mazda, did the reason why ever come up?
