The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

And that made a large puff of black smoke when Dempsey had a falling out with Mazda, did the reason why ever come up?

Fixed it for ya. Skyactiv doesn't back fire like the rotary

Got this off the Motors TV twitter page. Looks like we've got a first look at the new LMP1 Porsche!

There are more pictures on the Porsche facebook page too.

Audi R18-esque design? Huh?

Hopefully, it changes in time, if not then yeah I'm going to call it an Audi R18 Porsche LMP1.

2 questions:

1. Design-hybrid or Gasoline-hybrid?
2. the name of the new Porsche LMP1?

1: I'm assuming petrol.
2: I have no idea.

Also I guess other teams feel Audi have developed the best car, so they're going to take inspiration from that for their own.

This car deserves its own thread, but whatever. ...

Love the front air intake. Very "classic" looking. I guess we'll all need mulsanne's corner analysis to know and understand what's shown and what's hidden

Apparently it's gonna be petrol, which I guess makes sense, I don't think Porsche have a diesel road car do they?

They do diesel Cayennes and Panameras. But i'm pretty sure they've confirmed the LMP1 will be petrol.

I love that the front is similar to the 917. 2014 can't come fast enough.

Now I forget is the Toyota invented wheel arch extension/double rear wing end plate illegal in the 2014 regs

It would be funny if this was just test bodywork and it totally changed on debut.

The chances of that happening are probably 0.0001% though.

Hopefully not! I'm really liking it. Especially the front!

Also I know the paintwork is just for the test car, but imagine it being blue and green. Would be a great version of the psychedelic paint job of the 917.

Agreed. That paint scheme belongs on a Porsche.

That Porsche looks like a Lola Aston Martin. (except the lights of course.) According to Radio Le Mans, and I'm inclined to agree.

Hah, as I quickly scrolled down the page I thought "thank god Audi have dropped those ridiculous head lights"... turns out it's the Porsche LMP1!

I wanna know what the thing sounds like. I've got to hear it.

1999, 15 years later.

Oh dear lord, please God!

If BMW join then this will be one to remember next year.

But I have a question.

Why would both Audi and Porsche race? Aren't both technically Volkswagen? If so then how much money must VW be dumping into Le Mans?

Many have asked that very question. I believe however VW have stated they were not going to stop their brands from racing each other and, not officially but in a way, sorta encourage it because they are a racing brand.

Also, it wouldn't be too different to from how Audi and Porsche are currently battling each other in GT3.

On the VW Porsche Audi thing... It's really not that simple, the way it seems to me, VW own Audi pretty much outright, as well as Porsche the Holding Co. and Porsche that make cars, but Porsche (Family Piëch, Family Porsche and some Arabs) - who were the owners of Porsche (holding company) which did have controlling share of Porsche (cars) - holds enough shares to have controlling say in VW... that may be wrong?... but there's lots of holding companies involved, and it all comes down to ownership vs. shareholding, eitherway, which companies have enough say in what to control the motorsport activities of other bits is unlikely to be simple.

On the BMW thing... HELL YEAH.. but I don't see it happening to be honest. It is BMW's 100th anniversary soon, and there's talk of a supercar.. maybe they'll pull it all together as a centenary thing?

Toyota has potential to beat Audi but they can't make silly mistakes like last year.

Rebellion Racing also has a shot, although slimmer than Toyotas, they were only 5 laps behind last year...

So I've been trying to get my mind of of auto racing so I will be interested next week when it's time for the 24 so that I will watch all of it... and look where I have ended up... :P
