The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

^ Betting on a LMP1 program for Nissan. ;)

Thats the plan- Showcase the elctric car, and then wiggle themselves into P1. Much like the Deltawing tried to do (And found a bit of success, albeit only in North America. The fact that they got that car a full season P1 entry astounds me).

Rebellion Racing also has a shot, although slimmer than Toyotas, they were only 5 laps behind last year...

So I've been trying to get my mind of of auto racing so I will be interested next week when it's time for the 24 so that I will watch all of it... and look where I have ended up... :P

I've heard a lot of predictions that Rebellion should lead laps 11-12!

Umm... Actually, what I've heard is fairly simple. The Audis should be faster than the Toyotas, but not by much. The increased fuel efficiency of the Toyota over the Audi should allow Toyota to keep up. However, Toyota should have slightly longer fuel stops due to increased fuel capacity, so they'll have to be running relatively close in pace to Audi to be able to stand a chance of winning. There is also the small matter of the Toyota's reliability, which is currently a relatively unknown factor, but one which will likely play into Audi's hands.

Finally there is Rebellion. By the end of the race, if nobody encounters any issues, Rebellion should be 15 minutes down. However, if any of the Audis or Toyotas run into even 20 minutes of extra pit time due to issues, they'll have a hard time catching back up with Rebellion by the end of the race. Remember last year the highest place Rebellion finished ahead of one of the Audis and both Toyotas? It could easily happen again. But overall victory, and perhaps even a podium, are still a long shot for the small Swiss team.

A long shot, but not impossible.

My view summarised:

  • Audi will likely win, there car has well proven reliability and is very fast.
  • Toyota have a chance, but they'll have to run a pretty much perfect race if they want to win. Reliability may well prove their downfall.
  • Rebellion. Probably wont win, but could still prove more than a hassle for any of the Audis or Toyotas that run into problems.

Audi verses Toyota? Which ever one car gets a clean run through will win the race.

Remember last year? Audi did everything they could to throw the race away - All three lead cars going off the track. If they do that again they will lose.

If they all get a clean run, I predict a Toyota 1-2. (this is based on Spa lap averages between the Long Tail Audi and the 2013 Toyota. The Audi was an average one second a lap faster on new tyres and the Toyota was an average of one second faster on used tyres. 10 lap stint for Audi verses 12 laps for the Toyota is the issue.

Toyota's reliability is a question mark but so is Audi's. They have turned their engines up to produce more power. It would be funny if they blow up like Peugeot did a couple of years ago.

Ooh I love predictions :D

I thinks that both Audi and Toyota will both lose a car each before Sunday (Audi crash, Toyota something breaks), and then one of the other Audis will hit some problems at dawn, causing it to fall behind the #12 Rebellion, which holds on for 3rd place behind the winning Audi and the 2nd place Toyota.
Of course that prediction isn't really based on any real logic, but that is what I think will happen next weekend.

Also if I'm correct, you all owe me internet cookies :sly:

Toyota completed at least two 24hr and 30hr endurance tests with the new car. The hybrid installation at Spa was wrong and that caused the failure. There was a simple fix, but the brakes overheated which would have taken longer to repair. So they retired from the race at Spa.

They did two 25 hour test last year... They were both retired from the 24 hours of Le Mans before the 12 hours mark. I predict Toyota will barely win, if everyone has the perfect race. If Toyota has even pproblems, Audi will win. If they both have problems... then well idk. Here's the odds that I give them

Toyota: 9/20 = 45% chance
Audi: 10/20 = 50% chance

Rebellion: 4.5/100 >4.5% chance

Other: 0.5/100 <0.5% chance (Mclaren F1 GTR, 1995; All of the LMPs broke down)

Mclaren F1 GTR, 1995; All of the LMPs broke down

Sure, all of the LMPs broke down...

http://www.racingsportscars.com/photo/Le_Mans-1995-06-18.html?sort=Results

...except the one that finished in second place a lap down on the McLaren, and the other one in sixth that was nine laps down. Or the one in seventh sixteen laps down...

The Courage LMP probably would have won if Mario Andretti didn't have a minor crash in it at the Porsche Curves which broke its rear wing, but otherwise the McLarens were simply faster than the LMPs because they were better suited to the wet conditions of that year's race.

Also, the fact that F1 GTRs came as high as fourth in 1996 and 1998 and second in 1997, every time against far tougher opposition from factory teams such as Porsche (1996-98), Nissan (1997-98), Mercedes (1998), Toyota (1998), and BMW (1998) tells me that result wasn't a fluke...

I'm hoping the Le Mans gods throw a wrench at both Audi and Toyota and give the winner's trophy to Rebellion.

But a guy can only hope.:)

I agree that it looked like Audi tried to throw it last year. Judging by the times at the Le Mans test though, it looks like Audi is definitely taking the race more seriously this year.

Toyota will challenge for at least 12 hours.

In all honesty GTE is only class i'll be watching. GO AMR!

Speaking of which, we've done this last couple years on GTP - how about we change avatars to show who we are supporting - already done mine and the profile page ;)

Really hope someone picks this up. I hear Nissan are looking for a chassis... Also read somewhere that BMW may be planning a prototype move in the future.

Heck, if I won the Mega Millions, I'd pay for it...

You hear about Nissan from where?

Given that they reveal the 2014 Garage 56 car on the 21st, I'd say they already have what they need.

As for BMW. It is no secret that the wanted to enter WEC in the GT-E category. They couldn't because they wanted the crack Schnitzer team to run the effort and they are busy with DTM. Too many DTM and WEC round clashed to make it viable.

How does that become a prototype move? Source?

If I could be bothered to have Audi and Aston Martin in one pic then I would!

Done, feels weird not seeing the blue rectangle thing.👍

Yup. I thought of using this one, too, but it's tough to ID in avatar size:
