Which groups are those?

In Flames, Fear Factory, Mnemic, Tool, Ill Nino, Mudvayne, System of a Down, etc... etc... etc... etc...

The list goes on....

They claim it's strictly not named after the Alice In Chains song...

They can claim all they want... Many of Godsmack's songs can be directly traced to Alice in Chains songs... From beat structure, to concept, to vocals... I am a huge Alice in Chains fan, so it is very disconcerting to me to see a band so blatantly rip them off, and make it big doing so...

Godsmack 👎 👎 👎

Ill Nino? I wouldn't think you'd like Ill Nino. They're very whiny -- in fact, I'd even go as far to say they're a heavy emo band.

I'v been listening to good ol' metallica again...sometimes you kinda forget how good they used to be. Kill em all 👍

yeah that's one of their best albums. It realy shows the special talent Cliff Burton had. To bad he died in 1986. :indiff:

Kill em All is punk. :P

It´s a good album, but I like Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets better. Speaking of MoP, last week I´ve got a Dream Theater bootleg where they perform that whole album live, pretty cool! :)

The first three albums are speed metal, right?

Matt is the genre defining freak here, so you should ask him about it. :P

But as I´ve said before, Metallica was Thrash Metal until "And Justice For All". Which has a bit of Progressive influence on it too.

"The true birth of thrash. On Kill 'Em All, Metallica fuses the intricate riffing of New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Diamond Head with the velocity of Motörhead and hardcore punk."

I didn't say I liked them... In fact, I do not... I was merely pointing out other bands that have used a combination hardcore/melodic style...

Oh, and Ill Nino are not Emo Metal... They are Nu-Metal... "Emo" is pretty well defined, and does not mirror many, if any, elements from Ill Nino...

Ah, okay.

Yeah, I knew they're Nu Metal, but they're so whiney and their lyrics are very emo-esqueue. ;)

- Allmusic Review of Kill 'Em All

"In its early days, thrash was essentially the same thing as speed metal, the product of American bands who in the early '80s fused the lean, vicious attack of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with the tempos of hardcore punk and Motorhead. However, the dexterity and constant intensity required to play speed metal proved limiting to some, and a variety of different approaches quickly took shape: some thrash bands concentrated more on midtempo grooves, occasionally accelerating into speed-metal realms; some, like Metallica and Megadeth, used their instrumental technique to craft more intricate and progressive music" -allmusic on Thrash

Metallica is also mentioned as one of the leaders under Speed Metal.

One of the things with most metal genres is that they all have some elements in common, which makes some bands hard to distinguish, and some legitimitely fall under several genres.

Very true. I don't like them. Never have, never will. I don't exactly believe their claim, either, but who knows...?

Nope. Metallica's first four albums were Thrash. Black was more of a simple Heavy Metal album, and then they just went Modern Rock on us until St. Anger, which is categorised as crap.

Well, they're not overly Emo lyrics. There are a few minor elements of Emo lyrics in a few of their songs as I glance over some lyrics of theirs, but they don't seem to have predominant Emo features to class as Emo Metal.

I don't agree with that excerpt you posted. I don't see overly much of a Speed Metal style in Metallica's music, maybe only a couple of their songs. And again, I don't see the progressive influence.

Who wants to suggest Matt to be a moderator of the Music Forum, too? :D You know too mcuh!

Totaly agree St Anger is a bunch of crap when you look at the rest of there albums. You seem to know alot about metalgernes. What kind of gerne is Sepultura? I always tought it was trashmetal but i could be wrong.

Sepultura is thrash metal, but their first album was death metal I think. But now they´re in the same genre as Metallica: Crap Metal. :P

And about "And Justice For All", I said it has just a bit of Progressive influence. You know, long songs with hard riffs and difficult drum beats. They couldn´t even play the album live because of that.

Hah, yeah. Lars can't play "Dyers Eve". In fact, when they were recording it they recorded it in 6 second bursts and looped it.

So they suck at the moment? I like the song mindwar i havent
heard the rest yet. I've got their albums 'roots' and 'against'. I like the amazon influence on those cd's.

FatAssBR is pretty much on the ball, although you'd expect him to be with Sepultura, being Brazilian and all! :P

But Sepultura's first album was Death Metal, like Felipe said, then they headed into Thrash. By Chaos A.D., they started heading into Groove Metal, with a bit of a Hardcore influence.

Chaos A.D. was the last good Sepultura album, in my opinion.

Hmm, I see a little, but not too much.

And I really laughed when I first heard about Lars not being able to play his own song. It really gave me proof to show that Lars is not the greatest drummer, and is very overrated, contrary to popular belief.

Put it this way: Roots, Against, Nation and Roorback are not the true Sepultura sound. Try Chaos A.D., Arise or Beneath the Remains.

Jimmy (Matt?): On your reccomendation, I'm putting Chaos AD on my 'to burn' list. I already know I really like the title song (and it's Apocalyptica version).

Shannon: That's a really interesting tidbit. It doesn't sound /that/ hard. Maybe listning to Dream Theatre and Fear Factory has skewed my perception of what kind of drumming is hard to do.

Title song? Refuse/Resist? I find that song to be different from the other ones on the album.

I bought some new albums yesterday, one of them is "Gateways to Annihilation" by Morbid Angel. My second Death Metal cd, I think that the band rules, I've been listening to them most of today. I'm still searching for the "Covenant" album, cd.

What do you guys think of Morbid Angel?

Morbid Angel are good. If you're a Death Metal fan, you almost have to like these guys. Getaways to Annihilation is good, but still, keep searching for Covenant.

An interesting tidbit about Morbid Angel: All of their albums go in alphabetical order, chronologically.

Yeah, my real name's Matt. Refuse/Resist is probably the best song off the album, but the others a pretty good. Good album.

Apparantly the speed and technicality combined is too hard for Lars to play, according to one of my mates that drums. Others can play it. I believe Joey Jordison played it when he filled in for Lars when Lars went to hospital.

It just goes to show how overrated Lars really is.

I noticed that too while looking at the band's website, and looking at the discography page.

Altar of Masses
Blesed are the Sick
Covenant
Domination
Entangled in Chaos
Formulas Fatal to the Flesh
Gateways of Annihilation
Heretic

Strange! But all albums have cool artwork.

Morbid Angel is currently touring with Soulfly. Anyone going?

Hmmm Bathory anyone? I thought bathory were superb personally, shame Quorthon is dead though :(

Hell no. If a ten year old got ahold of some of their albums, eh, not very good. Well, the new album maybe. but old stuff is punk for sure.

You just keep pretending ;). They will have all the blink 182 cds, piled along side avril,

I'm looking for something with very heavy guitar work and without crazy screamyness (well, I can tolerate the screaming in Quicksilver Clouds and In Flames but that's because it's done so damn well). Any suggestions?

I forgot to add, I'd like a bit of melody - I don't need any of those heavy riffs that are like 4 notes and run through the entire song. That's what Techno is for.

Quorthon is a talented guy. One thing I want to hear are Bathory's Thrash albums. All Bathory fans hate the albums, but I'm wondering whether that's because they are also Black Metal fans, and hated the change, or if they really aren't that great.

The two albums are called Requiem and Octagon, by the way.

Well, that's pretty general. That could go anywhere. Anywhere from Unearth to Pantera. Chimaira? Killswitch Engage? Try some of those, and if you don't like them, you'll probably have to be a bit more specific. :indiff:

That's what I was looking for. I thought you didn't want people listening to emo-metal?
