Porsche 962-004 "Colour Crime"

WARNING: This one is NOT for the purists.

My entry to the LEC #7 "Colour Crime" was a recoloured version of the 1985 Porsche 962-004 Works car driven by Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass in the Spa 1000 km race (see previous post for the original). It's an iconic livery on one of my favourite racing cars, and one of the most successful racing platforms in history. It felt truly criminal to recolour this iconic colour scheme, but at the same time it was a lot of fun!

Taking an original legend and rethinking all the colours to create something that gives a different vibe was a difficult and controversial process, in which I ended up making nine different colour variations over the space of a couple of weeks. There were pale greens, pastel yellows, rusty reds, muddy oranges, even monochromatic versions, before I finally settled on a combination of bright pink and baby blue, with yellow and PZK colourshift detailing. The end result is, well, bright!

I almost settled on a monochromatic version before I changed my entry to the one above, in which the base colours were switch to black/grey, with green and metallic silver detailing. In the end I felt it was just a bit too subtle against the incredible entries in that round, so I upped my criminal activity to a less conspicuous level!

Another notable version which I almost submitted was one inspired by the Silk Cut Jaguar XJR-9. I switch the contrast and made it a white/purple with yellow/red detailing, and to be honest I think it works quite well! The Rothmans logo just didn't pop enough for my liking, so it was relegated back to 3rd in the queue...

Eneos EneJet F-Type Gr.3

My entry for the Livery Editor Competition #11 "Gradient Change", which started life as a reinterpretation of the classic Silk Cut Jaguar XJR-9 and morphed into something completely different. I started with the classic colour combo, white base, purple main contrast and yellow details - then I thought, why not do a full colour transition gradient, and drop the yellow underneath the purple? That made it appear more orange and actually a bit more like a flame transition.

Once I'd settled on the colour transition, I thought why not switch the base colour to a white pearl? This gave it a warmer white tone which works well with the yellow/orange tones and provides further contrast to the purple at the tail end. Then I started trying to work out where to take this livery, as the original idea of a Silk Cut derivative had gone. Having never made an original with DTM intentions, I found a bunch of DTM-specific decals, including number boards (thanks @krisduv!), AutoHero, and avd.de logos, then proceeded to adorn the car with series sponsors (Remus, Schaeffler, Michelin) and further sponsors which made sense for a Jaguar or just looked right! The AutoHero windscreen banner is an almost perfect match for the car's colour scheme, and the avd.de decal with red background pops against the warm colour tones. From there I needed to find a suitable title sponsor, so I looked through the built-in decals and saw the Eneos logo with it's orange swirl - a quick search through the user-uploaded decals and I went for Eneos EneJet!

To test the livery out and see that everything looked right, I took it out for a few laps of Sardegna and put it through it's paces.
On circuit the livery looks right at home and sits well against the AI liveries - I've no doubt it would look equally at home in a full DTM replica field!

Calsonic Amuse NISMO 380RS Super Leggera

Warning: This post is pic-heavy!

The first of my "Legends Revisited" duo for the Amuse cars in game, recreating a blend of the iconic Calsonic R32 and R33, with some hints of street car style.

To start this one off, I thought Bay Side Blue would suit this body shape nicely, and as I expected, it came out great! The metallic blue really pops and brings added life to the edgy curves of the 350Z body panels, and the contrast against the white and orange, plus the carbon aero pieces, is just perfect! Then, to make something out of the roof, I added white over the roof arch, linking the A and C pillars and making the black roof panel pop.

I took a mix of the R32 and R33 Skyline GT-R from JGTC days, and placed the relevant decals around the car, but stripped back some of the more minor sponsors and those which didn't appear on both cars, in order to present a more race-inspired street-style look. And to bring the livery into the "period-correct" style, I've sourced the updated logos which I believe are correct for the year of the car to give a more authentic feel. To complete the look, it rides on lightweight Rays Volk Racing wheels.

Before I decided to make this livery, I hadn't really driven the 380RS, so I thought I might give it a tune worthy of the WTC600 at Tokyo - and I was happily blown away by it. It sticks to the road like mad and tyre wear / fuel consumption are both really manageable, so it's a joy to drive and is easily capable of a win. It doesn't have the highest top speed, topping out around 285kph on the straight and losing a second or two to the fastest cars, but it more than makes up for it with immense road-holding through the turns and easily claws back 3-4s per lap when driven hard on SH tyres. It has easily become my favourite "grind" car in the 600 PP category!

As I mentioned at the start of this post, this is the first of a duo. The second Amuse car is the S2000 GT1 Turbo, which I thought would look epic adorned in the Mobil 1 NSX livery, and here they are together in Tokyo:

Mobil 1 Amuse S2000 GT1 Turbo

The second instalment in my "Reinventing Legends" duo is the Mobil 1 NSX GT300 from 2001 JGTC transposed onto the mad body of the Amuse S2000 GT1 Turbo.

This one takes a more literal transfer from race car to road car, but omits the race numbers to keep that race-but-road feel I wanted both of these amazing cars to present.
The base colour is Honda's "Premium White Pearl", keeping that OEM+ feel, and all sponsor logos are as they were on the 2001 car, with the exception of the Amuse and Titan decals along the sills below the doors.
The hard top roof panel has been painted matte black with semi-transparent carbon texture overlaid to give a semi-gloss carbon finish as has the massive rear wing!

As per the Calsonic Amuse Nismo 380RS (previous post), the Mobil 1 Amuse S2000 GT1 is running Rays alloys, again contributing to that race-ready tuner vibe.
I took it out for a blast around Tokyo and a photoshoot at one of my favourite Scapes locations - I love the way the colours and lights work here to create a really dynamic scene with loads of drama!

Daigo Saito's AE86 Sprinter Trueno

Created as an entry to the GTP LEC #12 "The Left is not the Right", this is a fictional livery for Japanese drifter Daigo Saito who builds absolutely mad Toyota drift cars and has had a long-standing relationship with Sunoco, Tone and Monster Energy (although now seems to have teamed up with TMAR).

The livery uses numerous Daigo Saito builds (GR Yaris, GR Supra, GR 86, all 2JZ-swapped, of course!) as the basis for the colour scheme and graphic layout, especially on the left side of the car where the layout is fairly similar to those cars mentioned. The right side is where the livery takes a big turn and flips the "conventional" layout completely and puts a much bigger emphasis on Monster Energy and gives TONE a large portion of real estate over the rear quarter. As Sunoco is still a big part of the sponsorship deal, it takes pride of place on the roof instead, literally turning the norm on it's head.

Even though the livery is based on an asymmetric layout, several sponsors get a symmetric logo layout, namely on the front and rear corners, plus the decals on the bonnet keep a symmetrical centreline layout, to retain some semblance of normailty!

Of course a drift build isn't worth anything if it can't drift, so I took it to Tsukuba for some smokey sideways action! It's such a short wheelbase that it's actually really tricky to drift, and it's not got a lot of power (PLEASE PD, enable the 2JZ swap for the AE86's!!) but it gets sideways if you push it hard enough. I've yet to perfect the tune, but it's definitely a fun little beast to drive!

Bilstein Pagani Huayra SP-EVO GT2

I came across a CGI concept car on Instagram which was a collaboration between @spdesignsest and @artsbybildraw. Their idea was a stripped out Pagani Huayra turned into a high-spec race car, to compete in the Fanatec GT World Challenge and claim the title of "Most expensive entry". Starting off with a Huayra is a good start to get you on the road to claiming that title!

Seeing as we're limited in what we can do to the cars in GT7, it's far from a true replica, but I've tried to capture the essence of the livery as best I could. Built over a matt carbon base, the glossy baby blue and white decals stand pop, with the added contrast of the yellow on the Bilstein and Pirelli logos to create an eye-catching visual!

Before I built this, I didn't think of building a road car to take on the GT3 cars at Sardegna, but this thing with a Praiano tune maxed out makes a refreshing change from the purpose-built GT3 cars, and is capable of a hard-earned win. Three runs at Sardegna and it's paid debt off, so it's well worth the investment!

BMW VGT Monochrome Edition

Way back in the distant past, when GT Sport was still the cool thing, a fellow GT Planet member put in a request for a monochrome version of the BMW VGT based on some visuals released with the VGT launch, replacing the M Sport colours with grey, black, and red. I happily obliged and here's the result:

Being one of my favourite cars in GT Sport, I simply HAD to get it in GT 7 and adorn it with this simple gem of a livery. It was my first ever attempt at "complex" custom decals - anything more complicated than simple blocks and text was "advanced" level for me at the time - and it still stands as one of my favourites!

Sadly, I've tried it at Tokyo WTC600 to see if I could reclaim some of my purchase cost from it but the PP system penalises it so badly it lags behind by miles. It's fully capable of a no-stop, but in my hands I've not yet managed to win in it. That said, it's a riot to drive through all the twisty stuff, swallowing it whole and spitting it out without so much as a splutter or hiccup. Dependable and arrow sharp. Love this thing!

Porsche 930 Turbo Dazzle Camo

A simple livery designed to be bold and eye-catching. Based on a concept by Yagodesign, this uses a monochromatic dazzle camo as the main livery feature, with pops of bright pink for contrast!

The original concept was made for a 964-gen 911 Turbo, but I felt like it would work well on the 930 so I applied the same philosophy and basic elements to the 930 body.
There aren't huge differences between the two models (as per pretty much every 911 evolution!) so it works well using the same approach.
To keep things looking right, I created a 930-era "turbo" logo and "930" race number on the rear ducktail wing and sourced a period-correct UK personalised plate.

Once complete, I headed to the "Illuminations" collection in Scapes and found the pinkest scene I could (two photos above) and they came out amazing!
I then carried on with the Illuminations collection and found a couple of scene where I could keep the red/pink tone to complete the set.

Polyphony Digital Supra JGTC '97

My entry for the LEC #14: "Polyphony Digital", imagining a livery specifically for PD.

For this one I decided to take a car from the launch year of the original Gran Turismo and give it a fictional reality where Kazunori Yamauchi was the sole driver for a PD-liveried entry into the 1997 JGTC, with Toyota and Sony coming to the party to bolster the chances of a successful entry.

I started with the Denso Team Sard livery applied to the Castrol TOM'S Supra GT 500 (and interestingly found a few differences in the cars, despite running in the same competition on the same year with the same platform), and proceeded to switch out the key sponsors for PD logos and worked my way around the car revising the sponsor logos to reflect those companies associated with PD.
The biggest visual change is the switch from red to a half-matte metallic purple to reflect PD's chosen branding colours.
The original livery already used white with some black contrast, so the colour combination works incredibly well.

Before the 1997 JGTC season started, PD took their new promo car out in Tokyo for some live publicity shots. They caused a lot of attention, shutting the roads down without authorisation and driving at mad speeds through pedestrian-lined streets! But it worked: any publicity is good publicity!

From there it was off to the race track to make an impact in a less controversial manner!
Kaz tried his best at the season's opener at Fuji in a torrential downpour in the GT500 (WTC800) class, but narrowly missed out by 1.2s in the treacherous conditions.

Ooh I'd forgotten about the wonderful pink effort here, will give it a run out in Race C tonight. some might not like it but I think it looks fantastic.

Ferrari VGT Rosso Corsa

In a strange move, the Ferrari VGT we all got for free with the 25th Anniversary celebrations was delivered in silver.
Not happy with running a non-stereotypical colour scheme on my new Ferrari, I decided to replicate the original livery but in the correct colour! So here it is, in all its Rosso Corsa beauty (minus a couple of the less important decals I couldn't source at the time...)

Ferrari VGT IGOL LM96

Back in 1996, Igol sponsored a Ferrari F40 to run the 24h Le Mans. The bold yellow/blue livery stands out as a departure from the Ferrari racing norm.

The Ferrari VGT body shape works well with the livery style of that F40, using the hard edge along the body as the break line between yellow and blue. I had to get inventive with the locations of a number of the decals, but the end result speaks for itself!

Porsche GT Team Vision GT

At the 24h of Le Mans in 2022, Porsche GT Team ran two 911 RSRs, taking victory in the GTE class with the #91 car, driven by Gianmaria Bruni, Richard Lietz and Frédéric Makowiecki.
To honor that victory and look to the future at the same time, I've transposed the livery from the Porsche GT Team cars onto the Porsche Vision GT.

The livery itself is pretty simple, consisting of a plain white base, two light grey stripes along the outsides of the cabin, and a single red stripe turning along the centreline of the car. Monochrome sponsor decals make up the rest of the livery.

To make things more appropriate to the Vision GT, I've given it Hypercar decals, and it's running #901 to give a nod to the winning car but also the origins of the 911.

I've tried to keep this one as true to the original as possible, with all decals matching as closely as I could get them to - even making the stars and stripes as standalone decals to get the pattern spacing and sizing right! There are, however, a few bits which diverge from the original, such as the hood cut-outs with the engine showing through, and I've added a Block licence plate because there's no option to NOT have a rear plate, sadly...

Honda JTCC / JGTC Series

For my first proper attempt at a custom race series, I decided to compile a field of Honda road cars all wearing liveries from the various cars which were entered into the JTCC series and JGTC series between 1985 and 2005.
I then set about choosing the cars to use for the series and settled on the various Civics, the Integras, and the S2000s. Each car was tuned to 230hp and 1250kg, with SH tyres, but varying levels of tune parts to keep things interesting.
The race series was five rounds of three races, taking in Suzuka, Autopolis, Fuji, Tsukuba, and Kyoto Yamagiwa, and had four classes: Classic Type R's, Touring Cars, Roadsters, and Modern Civics.

I wanted to keep the aesthetic approach between the original car and the chosen imitation as similar as possible, so this car features a front lip, rear splitter, and big red wing.
Even the Rays wheels which closest resembles those on the 2004 car have been selected to keep the appearance looking right.

Oh and you have the wrong SuperGT or JGTC plates, depends if you picked the 2004 version (JGTC) or 2005 version (SuperGT).
But that's just nitpicking

Oh and you have the wrong SuperGT or JGTC plates, depends if you picked the 2004 version (JGTC) or 2005 version (SuperGT).

I have to admit, I was trying to source decals for 20+ cars at the time so I may have missed little details like that one! Thanks for pointing out the number plates, I'll have to do a revamp at some stage (if I can find the motivation!!).

EDIT: Was 2004/2005 the crossover between JGTC and Super GT?? There's a strong chance all my JGTC liveries will be wearing Super GT number plates, namely down to laziness on my behalf!

Yes, 2004 was JGTC and the 2005 season it was rebranded to SuperGT.
In 2013 the plates changed to sponsor, and it 2018 it was changed slightly ;)

Everyday is a school day, as they say! I think I used the same number plates for all of my JGTC-derived liveries in that list above, so I'll switch out the others before I share them. The ARTA Civic can exist as a JGTC/SuperGT hybrid in the meantime! :D

Gathers Civic Type R (EK) '97

My Honda JTCC / JGTC Series has two of the 1997 version of the Civic Type R, that iconic EK body shape. The ARTA livery was bright, bold, and very easy to spot.
The Gathers Civic Type R, based on the Mooncraft Mugen Accord of 1997 JTCC, driven by Ryo Michigami and Hideki Okada, is a bit less of an intensely eye-catching livery.

Comprising of a simple white base with sketchy-style red, black, and yellow graphics, the Gathers livery is still eye-catching in it's own way.

Where this livery really stands out is in the little details, like the grunge-style graphics, the pair of Michelin men on the tailgate, and the mildly comically-placed "Forward" decal on the nose (as if to tell you which way is forward!).

This was one of my favourite liveries on the Accord's JTCC days, and makes a great fit for the EK Civic too!

Idemitsu Mugen Civic Type R (EK) '98

Back in the early 90's, the Japanese Touring Car Championship (JTC) featured cars much more closely related to their road-going counterparts, and Honda ran the EG6 Civic (before the days of the Type R). Of those early Honda EG6 days, one of my favourites was the Idemitsu-liveried Mugen Honda Civic in 1992. Driven by Osamu Nakako and Hideki Okada, the team managed to comfortably win the JTC-3 division.

The livery uses a common colour combination - white, red, and black - but adds a metallic silver to stand out a bit, and the circular Idemitsu logos pop against the blocky design.

I tried to keep it as close to the original, even attempting to match the original wheels in style and colour (using the Hasegawa model as my reference image).

Team STP Civic Type R (EK) '98

Back in the early/mid-90's, Honda introduced the Civic Ferio, a passenger sedan version of their trusty hatchback. Naturally, it made an appearance at the JTCC, and Team Kunimitsu ran a STP-backed Ferio in the 1994 series, driven by Keiichi Tsuchiya. A season of mixed results left Tsuchiya in 16th at the end of the year.

Starting with O1 Flourescent, the brightly-coloured livery used a royal blue to contrast against the orange, with details in black and white for added pop. And it translates remarkably well onto the EK Civic body shape! Several oddities of 90's Japanese livery design made this one an interesting livery to finish off, like the transition between the central stripes and the horizontal stripes on the rear bumper.

The Ferio's appearance in JTCC was fairly unchanged from it's road-going counterpart, and that was fairly plain! So this style doesn't feature much at all in the way of custom parts - the only exterior change being some wheels with a similar appearance.
