The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

Mazda had a small gathering yesterday at their North American HQ in Irvine last night, which I was able to go to. The car looks excellent in person. It would be very hard for me to choose between this and the regular soft top.

Lots of mechanisms back here. The engineers said that the weight balance has changed slightly, but only to the degree of a few pounds. Basically the difference between an empty and full tank of gas.

I would go with the targa just for the anti-theft consideration. Still seems like a lot of mechanism peering over your shoulder there. Wonder how that aspect works vs the rag top.

There's a giant gear on each side powered by an electric motor from what I saw. Also, the rear window folds down when the roof is down, allowing for air to completely flow through, which is neat.

The soft top is manual, and a lot less complicated.

So, what does the ND V8 prototype weigh?
With the main parts in place and a full tank of fuel but missing the driveshaft, half shafts and exhaust: 2418 lbs. F:R balance is 54:46. This includes the upgraded wheels and tires, suspension and brakes.

We estimate the final weight will be 2500 lbs wet, 53:47.

The stock weight and balance of this car was 2328, 52:48. Not bad at all.

Crikey, that's a lot of power. I'd be happy with half that in an MX-5...

Would love to have a go though. I think my ideal MX-5 will always have four cylinders, as there's just something very satisfying about working a small four-pot hard in a light chassis, but I bet a V8 one is a riot. Think I'd be more tempted to drop a V8 into a cheap RX-8 shell.

I'm sure someone will buy a CX-9 just for that 2.5T. I call Mad Mike tuning one up and dropping it in the ND.

Oh YES YES HELL YES!! Look at that thing. Meticulously honed from a solid block of only the highest quality and purest win.

Okay, so cars being more expensive in the UK compared to the US is nothing new, but here the Abarth starts from the equivalent of more than $43,000!

It's cheaper than the Miata?! Or is it gonna have $5000 added to the price in Canada?

Either way going to inform my grandpa.

I thought that too but if you read the article they are both essentially priced the same for the base models, so it will probably still be 30,000 Canadian Peso when it finds its way here.
