The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

We need a BreezeFrees type title for this thread now I think.

Anyway, this is interesting...

Fiat Expected To Launch 124 Coupe In 2017

The Fiata looks as if it was designed to be a coupe. a Viper inspired roof would suit this car perfectly.

Reminds me of the Grand Theft Auto Ferrari thing. I like it. A baby, baby Ferrari with a turbo.

...wait. wait. Since Mazda don't currently make a turbo sports car(yet) It's like an RX-7 minus the rotary. A car the size of an MX-5 w/turbo. Fit a are going to sell a buttload of these. Let's see a Fiata Cup series.

I'm intrigued as to whether it'll actually be a proper coupe. Would seem odd that Mazda (which builds the Fiat) would tool up for a proper coupe when they won't make their own. And if they do, then it begs the question - why no proper MX-5 Coupe?

Sneaking suspicion the Fiat version will be a retractable hardtop like the MX-5 RF.

Maybe a no muss no fuss with a fixed coupe.
It almost looks like this.

Though, it would be less rigid with a hatch.
If they did the old Ur-Quattro fastback with small boot opening, that's a possibility. Not like it would be a car for camping.

I'd like to see what designers come up with. Good project.

Personally I don't like C-pillars that extend all the way back behind the boot lid. I think it looks nicer if it stopped in front of the boot lid like its normal soft top (or like the car two posts above). Of course this is only speaking in terms of aesthetics.

On a side note, am I weird for thinking that the Mazda is better looking than the Fiat?

No. I don't really get the love for the Fiat's looks. It looks too much like someone has bought one of those kits to transform the Mazda into something else and it's betrayed by overly-long overhangs at both ends.

While I've warmed up to the design over the past few months, those overhangs still kill me.

I think the rear of the Mazda is far better design. In fact, the ND's rear is one of my favorites in production at the moment at any price point. On the other hand I've never really warmed to the ND's droopy nose, I think the Fiat is slightly better resolved.

I've found that it really depends on the color and trim for me. A blue Classica looks better than the gussied up Lussos in my book, but they lack the cream interior option to really make it pop. Day-to-day, I think there is a part of me that would rather have the 124 for commuting to work and heading over to the grocery store, but I'd have a really hard time saying no to the MX-5 that's already damn-near perfect.

I think the front fascia is trying too hard to look retro. It's not ugly but I wouldn't hang a poster of it on my wall. The back is fine though.

I'm still pretty ech on the standard 124's looks. I much prefer it in Abarth form.

I want a Fiastback with Valeo's 48v BSG + electric supercharger system and miller cycle on a closed deck turbo 4.

Is that too much to ask?

I just don't like how excessively aggressive the Miata is. The proportions are better than the Fiata, but the details still remind me of some sort of angry shrunken Z4.

I dunno. It looks more aggressive in photos than it does in the real world. It's virtually impossible for something that small to look aggressive in the metal.

That said, I'm not overly fond of the squinty front end and weird fang-like DRLs. I'm not sure how I'd change it, but I'm intrigued to see how they eventually facelift it.

For me it's at its best in profile. I love the proportions (the slightly cab-backward stance looks more purposeful than the mid-cockpit of every other MX-5). One of those cars that shows a great-looking car doesn't need to be an expensive one.
