I don't see why you lefties aren't hugging up to nuclear. So clean so awesome. Nearly free!
Well, I am left-handed, but I am not a lefty. Perhaps you need to get out of YOUR echo-chamber.

Oh? Nuclear power? Well yes, it would be nice, but there are some issues with it. I'm sure you've heard about them occurring over the past 40 years or so.

Nuclear is great but solar is the cheapest energy possible in areas with lots of sunlight, nearly free! And wind is also super cheap. In certain regions, hydro can beat nuclear as well.

Nuclear has a place, but it's not always the best.

We, the "normal" people, are all in for Trump. Best economy, best everything. Just waiting to see you guys screaming in the streets on November 4th, 2020.
Wait, you really think Trump supporters are “normal”?

So this is just normal Americans doing normal American stuff?

h/t to @UKMikey for the very “normal” pic.

Talk about getting an agenda shoved down your throat. Isn't that the kind of thing they liked to say about liberals?
And their reaction to President Biden calling out the violent members is quite similar to how they described Democrats being "snowflakes" whenever they don't get their way...

...almost like they're projecting every time they complain.

Chuck Palahniuk should fry for giving them that pejorative.

...

No, I'm not being serious.

Australia is on fire.

@ScottPye20's mum "Look what Greta did to us..."
Nothing about moving away from Coal was 'at a moments notice'...

We replaced it largely with Gas as coal dependency fell...

What we didn't do was scale up renewables fast enough... but that's somewhat separate from the current crisis, which as @Scaff points out is the result of a different problem.
OK fair enough, I didn't realize how different the situation was compared to Australia, where we still rely on coal for most of our power. But I want to ask one question: is it fair to rapidly phase out coal-fired powerplants if the other energy sources are unable to fill the supply gap?

The other energy sources were able to fill the supply gap, now aside from the UK government botching (to an astonishing degree) the build of new nuclear power stations, you would have to time travel back over 40 years to the start of the coal scale back and convince people that the USSR was going to collapse and invade itself resulting in disruptions to supplying Europe with natural gas. Given that, at that point in time, Ukraine was still part of the USSR (as was Russia), they supplied Europe with zero Natural Gas (because Cold War), and the UK had ample Natural Gas of its own, and abundant gas storage in place, you would have been considered quite, quite mad and laughed out of the room.

Applying contemporary hindsight to the events of the last century is absurd.

That doesn't answer my question. I'm not talking about the UK anymore.

OK let me put it another way: over the last few months the East coast of Australia has had something of an energy crisis due to increased demand and the closure of several coal-fired powerplants, resulting in a price hike. One of them was Hazelwood power station in Victoria - it produced 22% of the state's electricity but was shut down by the foreign owners, citing climate change as a reason for it's closure. More of them will close as we move to renewables but our current infrastructure is soo far behind that it (currently) cannot fill the gaps left by coal-fired powerplants. I'm not against clean energy and I see the benefits but we need to have a smooth transition or more people will suffer in the meantime. Please don't take me to town over this because I'm not a fascist or a conservative who denies climate change.

And I was supposed to know that how?

Is it fair? Nope, but that particular station was long overdue removal, it was after all one of the dirtiest power stations across all OCED nations. The fault unfortunately lies (in a similar vein to the UK) with a lack of real oversite on private companies running power generation and the privatization of those same industries.

Nationalise the system, with a focus on investing (without profit) a move to alternative energy sources.

Yeah sorry I didn't make it clear.

Thank you! That is absolutely the truth about our power supply.

Who are "you lefties"?
I already tried this a few weeks ago in the America thread:
So none of you libs brought up this new inflation act bill today. What a win for you guys.
Which regular contributors to this thread are libs?
Those who self identify as libs. If you are not one, then relax, I am not talking about you.
To which Chrunch gave a very Joe Biden answer of "If I don't mention you, I'm not talking about you" a few weeks before Biden did the very same thing and that type of argument is suddenly not understandable at all.
