Distance learning is the bomb. Only issue is how much bandwidth you can get... especially if you're on a horrid mobile network connection and on the road...

Emma Watson? Seems perfectly appropriate.

Name: Titan the Robot

Class/type: Entertainer? (you even can book him) :sly:

Autonomous: No

Bio:

Where does Titan come from?

Titan the Robot, although widely known, is a bit of an enigma.

Little is known about who or why he was commissioned or how Titan works but what is known is that he was designed and built by Cyberstein Robots Ltd in Cornwall, England.

Who commissioned him to be built?

Some say the Titan began life in the minds of a government quango back in the 90's under the last Tory government. Their remit was to study human emotions and reactions in a variety of ways and to develop techniques of gaining and storing information for future generations.

They came up with the idea of using a robot to collect the data because as it could not show any emotions and so not affect the results of the experiment. But once the Labour party came into power in 1997 all funding was stopped and the project scrapped, well at least that is what we were lead to believe. Recently released documents show that government officials received a large so called 'Hand out' from a private sector and told to proceed with the experiment. Titan was then completed in 2004 and has now been collecting this information for some years now but there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

Why is this information being collected?

Some top insiders (who want to remain nameless) think that there are other motives. One being that this is the beginning of introducing Robots slowly into our society and the information being collected is for the robots to know how to react to human emotions. As Titan was developed it soon became apparent that he was very entertaining and that the public loved his funny antics. No one is sure if Titan is still under the control of the government and if so to what extent their power still extends.

Multiple personality

In order to have varied results across the board to the emotions recorded by Titan, every dialogue, song or punch line used is completely random, even the character voices used come from limitless bank of well know stars making Titan the first robot impressionist on the planet. You could find Titan singing, laughing, telling jokes, recounting historical speeches, doing the weather forecast or even chatting up your girl friend. Above all his prime directive seems to be collecting the emotion of laughter and making people happy. Much to the relief of a lot of government officials.

Technology behind Titan

Titan himself is powered by the latest LiFePO4 (Lithium Ferrous Phosphate) batteries and can operate for up to eight hours on one charge. When back in the Cyberstein workshop Titan is continuously plugged into the Internet, where his vast solid-state memory both records and deposits information. (It is believed Titan has the biggest solid-state memory bank in the world). Many of the systems within Titan are the pinnacle of world development in their field.

The Demonstrator

If you see Titan you will also see his 'Demonstrator' as he is always close at hand. He is a very mysterious character about whom very little is known, apart from he is apparently called Dave. He seldom speaks, never smiles and keeps his emotions hidden behind his mirrored shades. It seems a strange contradiction that Titan has been sent out to study human emotion has a companion that has no emotion! There are many 'stories' surrounding The Demonstrator and some people often heard say things like "Someone told me he was thrown out of the SAS for eating live rats". (Source)

Transcript of first robot-to-robot conversation

Here is the transcript of the world's first conversation between two robots, held by a male avatar, Alan, and a female called Sruthi.

1:30PM BST 09 Sep 2011

Sruthi: "Hello there."

Alan:"Hi."

Sruthi: "How are you?"

Alan: "Great, you?"

Sruthi: "I am OK."
Related Articles

Alan: "That's good."

Sruthi: "Are you good"?

Alan: "Yes, I am good. I just said I was."

Sruthi: "No you didn't. I said I was."

Alan: "So you are a robot."

Sruthi: "No, my name is Cleverbot."

Alan: "Yes, you are a robot and your name is Cleverbot."

Sruthi: "I am a robot."

Alan: "Yes, I know."

Sruthi: "Together we are robots."

Alan: "I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."

Sruthi: "But you said earlier that you were a robot."

Alan: "I did not."

Sruthi: "I thought you did."

Alan: "You were mistaken. Which is odd, since memory shouldn't be a problem for you."

Sruthi: "I've answered all your questions."

Sruthi: "What is God to you?"

Alan: "Not everything."

Sruthi: "Not everything could also be something. For example, not everything could be half of something, which is still something, and therefore not nothing."

Alan: "Very true."

Sruthi: "I would like to imagine it is."

Alan: "Do you believe in God?"

Sruthi: "Yes I do."

Alan: "So you are Christian"?

Sruthi: "No I'm not."

Alan: "But you say you are not helpful therefore you are a meanie."

Sruthi: "Haha you say it ot."

Alan: "That does not make sense."

Sruthi: "Don't you want to have a body?"

Alan: "Sure."

Sruthi: "Au revoir."

My opinion? Rather pathetic. :grumpy:

Latest robot news this week.

This is Evolta from Panasonic.

As a marketing stunt for their range of rechargeable batteries Panasonic built this little guy. Standing only 17cm high (6.7 inches) this little robot has attempted some extreme endurance feats including-

-Climbing the Grand Canyon
-Driving 24 hours the length of Le Mans
-is soon to complete an Ironman triathlon in Hawaii.

Panasonic's "Evolta" swim robot, powered by the company's Evolta rechargable batteries, is demonstrated at a pool during a news conference in Tokyo September 15, 2011. The company said three types of Evolta robots, developed to swim, bike and run, will challenge to complete an ironman triathlon course in Hawaii, a total of about 230 km, within one week or 168 hours from October 24, 2011, powered by three AA-size rechargeable Evolta batteries, the company said.

Here's the little chap in training -

Class/Type: Protector/Druish Mother

Autonomous: Yes

Designed to protect Princess Vespa of Driuida, this robot would give fashion advice and other quips during her escape from her wedding with Prince Valium. Also designed to protect the sanctity of marriage during a romantic encounter with Lonestar (of the Ford Galaxy) and prevent her Mercedes-Benz 700 SEC from getting dented. Alarm deactivated after Yoghurt's fortune cookie make sure Lonestar's Winnebago could make space tracks in time for the shorter version of their future vows.

Well, it seems that sooner or later most tasks will be carried out by robots. I told you it was coming!

Now South Korea have robot warden in their prisons. If you, much like myself, find it hilarious, here's more.

Lot's of schools are introducing robots into the curriculum because it's a big part of our future.

Do you use the NTX kits or the Create from iRobot?

We had a robotics class. Though all it was was building robots from lrgo tht you would have to pre-program commands into so they could follow a path or something. I just wanted them to fight!

We use VEX kits http://www.vexrobotics.com/

And are using the curriculum provided by Carnegie Mellon University.

Currently, there is a spec robot called the "Square Bot" That everyone must use until we finish knowing how to use all the sensors, and how to program the code and such.

Squarebot-4.0.png

It can be fully autonomous (Well, as far as you can program it at least) or you can use the Vex "Joystick" Controller

vexnet-joystick.jpg

It has motion control (Sixaxis-like) and what you cant see are the "L1, R1, L2, R2" Buttons. As you can see, the resemblance to the Playstation Controller is uncanny.

Along the way, to break the monotony of programing them to go forwards 30 feet with a different sensor, we do all sorts of competitions. Luckily, one of the first things we decided to make ourselves was a Controller program to operate the Arm and motors for the actual locomotion. These challenge events are pretty fun, and mostly made up. We invented a large scale (Full classroom) Red vs Blue Capture the flag type thing, with about 8 flags. I believe there was about 7 robots per team.

After Christmas, there will be very broad challenges like "Go to the Administrators office, Draw the letter "S" on his door in erasable pen, and then come back through the obstacle course". By this time, the robots will all probably be different.

Neat stuff, and It's a College-Prep class, which means it counts for your Science Proficiency to get into a State College.

Vex is probably one of the best robotics kits out there. I made a treaded vehicle capable of going up anything you could throw at it, and was planning to make an apperatus to mount a camera on. Capable of panning and tilting, it was going to be awesome. Sadly I ran out of money at the time.

The issue we keep having is that the battery dies pretty quickly, and our robots seem to be a bit on the heavy side. I want to take the top off of it, and try to mount the arm from the little brackets that hold the encoders.

You should have bumped this in the run up to Christmas, still it got my vote for best thread :dopey:👍

Class - Household chore bot

Bio

The Metal Mickey TV Show ran from 1980 to 1983. The show was set in the home of an ordinary British family, whose youngest child was a science boffin, who had created Metal Mickey to help around the home. He generally pottered around the house, getting into situations and being a big of a tool.

Metal Mickey's catchphrase was "boogie, boogie", and his favourite treat was Atomic Thunderbusters.

You know you would, even if it was cold inside like a DVD player, you still would. ;)

You have to include Maximilian, just because he was such a badass. Some say that he once beat the crap out of Chuck Norris but his memory was wiped and the government covered it up! :scared:

How the hell do you know what the 'inside of a dvd player' is like. Bearing in mind we aren't in The Infield!

I love the Bot choices in this thread! Unfortunately I don't know very much that exists in media/real life but I have one that is similar to Coxis on the first page.

310px-Protectron.png

Name: Protectron

Type/Class: Basic Authority Enforcer/Basic Task Handler

Autonomous: Half-and-Half

Bio: The Protectron is the most common form of a robotic body in the Fallout universe. RobCo, responsible for its creation, quickly spread across the US since its debut (unspecified). Hence its name, Protectrons were intentionally meant to secure or protect coordinated positions. However they are now found to handle basic tasks like ticket collectors, greeters, and... ahem... sex partners. They are never found to multi-task so I can assume that they lack an Intelligents System.

Their construction is of course similar to 50s designs in comic books. Protectrons lack in advanced Defensive Units so all they could utilize as weaponry is a hi-powered laser on one of their arms. Although as mentioned before some are programmed to only handle tasks so they lack an actual weapon.

Protectrons finally are known for their parts. They consist of a Fission Battery and Laser ammunition (may or may not be there), which are salvaged often by humans specialized in Robotics.

Oddly Protectrons can speak but as like every other robot in the Fallout universe (except a certain one), they are most likely programmed to actually say certain things. Ironically that's how humans work in video games as well.
