All those groups are alternative metal. And according to allmusic, Smile Empty Soul and Breaking Benjamin may also fall under post-Grunge.
Heh, I'll never trust allmusic with genres again, after I thought RCHP were college rock. :dunce:

Does anyone ever listen to Smile Empty Soul? They're at the top of my list of my favorite bands. Every track on their CD is enjoyably listenable, IMO. I can't wait for their next CD.
Smile Empty soul rules.

Anyone heard Motley Crue's new single, "If I Die Tomorrow"? I like it a lot 👍.
I heard it on the radio once, and it sounded cool. Its going to be on the new album as well. Comes out Tomorrow.

I've been hearing the new Crue song on the radio for a few days now, and I like it! It's not like their earlier stuff at all.

I'm listening to Audioslave's self-entitled album, and it's pretty good. There are a lot of songs on there I know and love.

I've only been listening to rock and the various rock-like genres for just over a year now... It already takes up about 40% of my 13000 song collection :)

Queens of the stone age (stoner rock) - They're coming to Toronto but I don't have anyone to go with :(
Kyuss (stoner rock)
Pink floyd
Van Halen
Carlos Santana (his older stuff is awesome)
U2
Motley Crue
Velvet Revolver
The list is huge

Isn't that their only album, to be honest Chris Cornell just gives them a Grunge feel, sort of grunge for 2003. Although I can't wait for their next album.

The Rock says you should listen to Janes Addiction and Stone Temple Pilots, who aren't a grunge band just because they made one pearl Jam'esq song (Plush).

Also the Rock wants you to know your role and shut your mouth probably.

I'll go with you emad! :D

I can't stand U2. Pop/crap/sell-out rock crap. I have one album of theirs (HtDaAB) but it is the first to go if I fill up my iRiver.

Aren't some members of one of those groups related to APC or Audioslave in some way?

I don't think Janes Addiction have anything to do with anyone you've mentioned, Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland is now in Velvet Revolver.

Ps, Kyuss is awesome, so are Fu Manchu and Some Porcupine Tree although I need to listen to their stuff more.

Ah, that's what I was thinking of. All those grunge-ish bands sound alike.

EDIT: It looks like Queens of the Stoneage are coming to Chicago, too. I'd go, but it's only for ages 18 and over. I turn 18 in june.

the Qotsa show i'm going to is being held in one of the most ecstacy filled clubs in my city... It'll be hard to find someone to go with.

Ah well, tickets are on sale at 10am :D:D:D

Early Van Halen. IMO possibly the best rock band to have ever existed. OFC they sucked when dave left, and became the bloated pile of crap 80's, cheese ball love song performing, dull sack of crap they are now. Oh well, here's hoping a regroup thingy with diamond dave, and get back to the glory days of songs like "unchained".

I've gotta agree with you Kev, Van Halen's glory days are definitley when they had Roth on lead vocals. When Sammy joined, the band lost it's edge (although if you ask me, they were starting to lose that edge on 1984). But as much as I would like to see it happen, I think a reunion tour with Roth is nearly impossible, since his ego is just too big for the band. And besides, he's busy pursuing a career as a paramedic now.

But Van Hagar has improved a lot since 5150 imo. Balance had some very good songs on it (The Seventh Seal and Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do are by far my favourite Hagar songs; great guitar riffs), and the new songs off of Best of Both Worlds are pretty good too.

Very much agreed. David Lee Roth suited Van Halen to a tee. His solo career was a bomb, I didn't like him much then.

Since I can't categorise them, and this includes a few related genres, I think Faith No More deserve a mention. Personally, I think they are one of the most talented bands to grace the music scene. Funniest thing is, none of them liked each other. They were different. Each song was different. They weren't a typical rock band. I think each individual member of that band were geniuses of their own instrument.

They are personally one of my favourite bands, probably my favourite band outside of metal. Anyway, that's my $0.02.

Faith No More are also one of my fave bands too XD

I also thought that some of dave lee roths solo stuff was ace, eat em smile especially, dave lee roth, steve vai and billy sheehan...OH YES!

I don't try and separate metal and rock groups. I tend to think of Metal as a sub genre of rock, much like folk rock or progressive rock instead of being a completely separate genre of music.

Exactly.

And isn't metal more geared towards the guitar and drum solos or have more emphasis on those instruments than on the lyrics? I find that Manson's music is more centered around his lyrics than the actual instruments.

Manson and Rammstein are Industrial. I guess Industrial is a fine line between rock and metal, where electronics are used. Take Fear Factory for an example. They are in Industrial band, but they get classed as metal whereas Manson doesn't.

Ah yes. I forgot about Faith No More. Hands down one of the most talented rock bands to date. 👍

And rock, technically, is a sub-genre of Blues. ;)

It's true to an extent. Metal is a sub-genre of Rock, but as it's evolved so much over time, it's broke off of the sub-genre category, to become a whole different genre of music. Much the same with Rock. Rock was considered a sub-genre of Blues, but as it evolved, the sub-genre tag become broken and it became it's own genre.

By the way, Marylin Manson is not considered Metal. Industrial isn't a sub-genre of Metal exactly. Industrial consists of bands that can tend towards Rock or Metal. Fear Factory and Mnemic are seen as being more of a Metal side of Industrial, where as Nine Inch Nails and Marylin Manson aren't. On top of this, Industrial has so many sub-genres of itself, it's insane. Try this:

Musicology of Industrial Music

First wave (70s to 80s - Industrial Records)

Avant-Garde / experimental
Noise / shock
Electronic / dance

Second wave (80s to 90s - Wax Trax)

EBM / industrial dance
Electro-industrial / elektro
Aggro-industrial
Coldwave
Power electronics
Death industrial
Dark industrial
Industrial rock

Third wave (90s to 00s - Ant-Zen)

Industrial techno
Power Noise
Technoid
Drum n noise

--------------------------------

Industrial is just as crazy as Metal categorising. :)

I always thought that the Rolling Stones sucked, was I wrong. One day at a goodwill, I found a Rolling Stones cassette, "Stryped". I really started liking it. It also has "Street Fighting Man", which was one song the Crüe covered in the new album, I always wondered what the originals sounded like.

This July and August, Mötley Crüe will feature "The Carnival of Sins" Tour. In both US and Canada. They will also feature two other bands, whom I forgot.

I believe Sum 41 will be on that tour, amongs other bands which are generally not very well known. Never was much of a fan of Motley Crue, but they put on a hell of a show ... one which would be good to see.
