Finally got this (a long and tortured story about e-commerce) and, after arriving home at 9.30pm last night after a long and particularly boring work conference, had a bit of a flick through one of the disks.

I'm amazed at how different it looks! I suppose it's a case of the TV copies getting faded with repeated plays (plus quality of reception vs. DVD) but it was quite an eye-opener. I suspect

Did anyone else who got the DVD set notice this?

I did like the comment from Matt Groenig in the introduction - 'with 280 odd episodes in the can, hopefully you will complete the whole collection just in time for the next format change'.

I'm a big Simpsons fan. Is the DVD just the first series, coz I prefer the newer episodes. Homer is just so much funnier now.....

Yeah - it is. I really enjoyed the first series, the humour is much more, mmm..., wry, than it is now. It's more slapstick and parody driven now (I'm not saying that's a bad thing!! I love the show!).

There are some great moments in the first series - Krusty gets Busted was a classic (Wiggam - 'well, we made a horrible, horrible mistake.... it won't happen again!').

I'm looking forward to going through them.

I am hanging out for the series III and IV episodes - they were at the top of their powers then.

I am also hanging out for Futurama.

Oh yeah I love Futurama, gotta love Bender.
So how many episodes are on the DVD, I'm thinking of buying it soon you see.
I agree with everything you say there it is a lot more slapstick now, I mean if you've seen the one where they fit a tennis court in the back yard then IMO that is one of the funniest Simpsons I have ever seen, the things that Homer does in it are just so stupid!!!

The art is just so much more refined now than it was in the first season. If you listen to the commentary by all of the creators, they poke quite a bit of fun at the animation. I can't recall the reason, but I think that they had originally sent it to Korea to be drawn... but I'd have to watch it again.
Any way we look at it though, it the beginning of a great series, and the upcoming seasons only get better. :D

Just for everyones info i found this out at IGN.COM
" The Simpsons Season 2
We're asked about this more than Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future combined. The latest word out of Fox is to look for the second season around Easter."
:D

I think you'll find it's still done in Korea - it's done there for cost reasons, it's a running gag in the series. The initial storyboards are done in the US, and then it's sent over to Korea for animation.

Groening's comment in the fist DVD's was that he just submitted sketches for the first series thinking that the drawings would be cleaned up - and they weren't!
