Anyways, here are some pictures, enjoy. :)
Nice Corrado. You shouldd lower it about an 1" and it'd look even better.;)

good question, I'd expect he asked someone to run it when he heard he was going to be banned

How would he know that he was going to be banned? So I guess we'll need a new leader, eh?

He asked me to do it before he was banned, so I guess thats the best answer I have. To be completely honest, I have no idea where to start, so lets keep talking and getting some folks in here... I'd be happy to start a new thread, otherwise someone else is more than welcome to, and we can get down to business...

Here are a few more shots from a local carshow

I like the Mk. 1, Snowflakes are awesome.👍 Although I never went for the wood thing. BTW I found a 1971-1972 partly restored Super Beetle a couple miles from my house. No exterior rust and no rust on the front fenders/strut area. I'll see what I can do. ;) He also had a Minibus and a 944.

How have I not seen this until now?

I would like to join! Everyone in my family drives VW's

Here is my 1995 GTI VR6
GTISM06a.jpg

My Dad has a '02 Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg, my mom has an '04 Passat 1.8T, and my brother a '00 GTI VR6 (12v)

Right now my VR is giving me a little trouble, the timing chain tensioner is going and I am in desperate need of some new wheel bearings but I dont have any plan on selling. I know that according to some die-hard VW fans, the models after the MKII are kind of "eeehhh" but I would beg to differ.

Woot woot! I'll *hopefully* be installing the turbo-back exhaust this weekend!
I can't wait to hear it.

I just bought a shadow blue Rabbit/Golf V last night. Does that count me in?

I've always liked the Golfs and Jettas, but until now haven't been financially stable enough to be able to pick and choose my own car.

I test drove every compact and subcompact out there and nothing could compare with price and features, plus it was fun as hell to drive. My only plan is to add some alloy wheels later as they didn't have the 16" alloy option available and would only offer me the 17" $1500 package from the Driver Gear catalogue. I decided to settle for the steel wheels with covers for now.

This morning I set out for work and got on the interstate reminding myself that I need to keep the speed down for 600-1000 miles to break it in only to look down and realize I hit 80mph without realizing it. I set the cruise for 65mph and felt like I was crawling, even though I was passing a few trucks and slow people.

I also get the gutar they have been advertising lately, which is pointless as I don't play and due to health reasons lack the dexterity in my left hand to learn. I guess it will be Ebay'd.

The only complaint I have so far (other than the speeding tickets in my future-my brother even told me it would happen after a drive with me) is the auxillary port for the stereo is in the glove box. It isn't the most convenient place to have my iPod when I'm driving by myself. That's easily fixed with a longer stereo cord, so it isn't a major issue. I only mentioned it for the sake of honesty.

Anyway, I will probably have some pics in my user gallery by the end of the week. I got in at 11:30 PM last night and was a bit tired to worry about charging the camera batteries and taking pictures.

Well it looks quite odd in my opinion.

Foolkiller, nice car you got, a Golf. The brand-new model, I suppose? What's your opinion on the styling?

Yeah, I guess I should have said 2007.

I love the styling. It looks a little sportier than previous models just because it is more rounded around the edges and the lines just have a "goes fast" kind of look to them. Plus the VW badge as the hatch release, while cheesy, is kind of cool.

The interior styling is incredible. Everything is laid out almost perfectly for me and even with the two door I watched the dealer, who stood over six feet, climb in the back and sit comfortably with plenty of extra head room. The stick shift is a nice ball shape that feels great and everything appears solid.

The interior really shows at night as the gauges light up with blue numbrs and all the buttons light up in red. Then just to be sure I can see there is red ambient lighting that comes from the ceiling.

I guess the biggest difference that I see is that this model looks like it should be going fast. I remember the first time I tried taking off on a Golf to get ahead of it. It was a TDI and just by looking at it I thought I could handle it (this was before I was heavily into cars, obviously). My car friend riding with me told me I couldn't do it, but I tried anyway thinking I could beat that boxy looking thing (nevermind that I was in a hand-me-down Buick). Well, the guy in the Golf saw what I was doing and just took off, leaving me way behind. That was when my love for VWs began. I realized they are much more than they appear.

This new model looks like it should be going fast. I've actually seen two people walk around my car in the parking lot at work (I park where I can see it from my desk). I hit the lock button on my key fob just so it beeps at them once and they know I am watching, but there is a Jetta and two Golfs at work and no one even gives them a second glance. Between teh design and teh pricing this model is gaining some attention and I imagine that if teh reliability holds out with most of the manufacturing moving back to Germany that this will become a very popular car.

I checked out a Yaris, the Fit, a Civic, a used Corolla, and a used Mazda 3. For the Yaris and Fit I tried adding options to make them at least close to the base Rabbit but the price went over every time. If it had been cheaper I might have forgiven that they had almost no power left after hitting 60mph unless you were willing to rev the engine. Last night a guy was going slow in front of me and so I changed lanes and barely pushed on the gas and it was like "hop" 10mph faster without realizing it. The Mazda3 was teh hatchback and was the closest to the Rabbit, and my second choice, but a used 2005 cost just as much as the Rabbit and had less features.

Of course, all the safety features that come in a VW made my insurance only go up from a used hunk of junk by $12 a month. So, that helped immensely in the decision making process as well.

Anyway, if anyone is looking for a sports hatch I will recommend the Rabbit every time at this point. If I can get some major miles with little problems then I will probably own VWs for life.

Excellent first impression, huh? It indeed is sporty from what my dad has said as well, since he works at at VW dealer. Yaris and the Fit doesn't even come close to the Golf in terms of power and confidence on the road from reviews I've read on C&D. Plus the blue backlight on the gauges sounds interesting. It's a good color.

I would say that a comparable sporty car (in a hatch) would probably be a Mazda3. The Mazdas are just to pricey in comparison. Part of my styling love could also be that mine came with the hatch spoiler and chrome tipped exhaust.

The gauges are nice with the blue numbers. It just adds a nice feel, especially compared to my old Kia and my wife's '97 Corolla. Sometimes doing a little something that is purely asthetic like that makes it stand out from the rest of the compact economy class and I am sure it helps sell the cars to someone like myself who is buying their first new car.

Anyway, I finally did the pictures. I'll grab some of the gauges later. I'll be doing a whole new set when I get a good sunny day. It was raining yesterday so the pictures are kind of dark and there is road grime on the car. Figures it would rain two days after I buy a new car.

Ahh so that's how the latch works. Only VW owners know of this, I suppose. Now there aren't any ugly keyholes that gets in a picture's way.

I did notice that the car doesn't have alloy wheels. It still looks stylish enough, though.

I've been looking at the Rabbit pretty hard lately, but I'm afraid that I can't come anywhere close to affording one any time soon. Quite unfortunate really, as I love the car. Every time I'm at the VW dealer I'm all over them, and I'm already dead-set on a Polar White coupe with only the safety boxes checked. I don't need anything special, and I would be looking to spend as little money as possible.

Given that Volkswagens tend to fare quite well with resale values, I'm probably looking at two or three years before one could dip into my price range (preferably less than $10K) on the used car market, and given that most models that I've seen here in Grand Rapids have been fully-loaded sedans, its going to be hard to find what I want.

---

...I do have to ask, hows the fuel mileage with the 2.5? It is rated a bit worse than my 2.0L, but even then it can't be that bad. I'd assume highway mileage would be pretty good, but around town I wouldn't count on too much...

---

Oh well, I'm still looking into an MKIV Golf or Jetta Wagon, preferably with the 1.8T. But they are somewhat hard to find, particularly without the Triptronic in some cases, and I'm worried more about insurance than anything. Its allready far too much with my current MKIII Wolfsburg, and although it is a great car, it certainly isn't an MKIV.

(In a perfect world filled with extra cash and no tuition costs, I'd be driving a black Passat W8. But this isn't a perfect world, is it?)

No keyholes. It unlocks using the key fob or a lever inside the driver's door.

Yeah, I am going to save up the cash and then call around in the spring to see if I can still get the $400 16" wheels from any of the dealers. I just can't see paying nearly $1500 for 17" wheels.

I know the feeling. When I was your age I had just flipped my first car ('85 Plymouth Horizon) and was forced to learn to drive a manual in order to inherit my mom's old '88 Buick Somerset. While it was great because I learned to drive a manual when I probably wouldn't have otherwise taking a hand-me-down car was not what I wanted. Then after the Buick died I inherited my brother's old Saturn. The first car I actually bought with my own money was my Kia and that was because it was only $4000 for a year old car. I'm 27 years old and I just got to go out and select my own new car that I could afford.

And before anyone says anything about me being given cars -- both times it was my Christmas and birthday from both divorced parents and my brother combined. I always paid for my own insurance and any repairs or maintenance.

I have been watching for this to come along in a base two-door manual since August. I saw one in silver before I was ready to buy but then it was gone. I'm glad I had to wait now as the first one available after I was ready to buy was the color I wanted too.

I am on my first measured tank (I forgot to reset the trip when I left the dealer and didn't pay attention when I filled up) and so far I have over 300 miles on this tank and still have a quarter of a tank to go. At this current rate I should be around 28-30 mpg. It isn't the 35 or so I wanted when I first started looking at cars but the cost difference in its class and the fun I am having from it are more than making up for it. Plus, all the customer reviews I read mention that they keep getting better mileage over time.

Wow, I doubled my insurance coverage from my Kia and it only increased $24 a month. By the time they figured all my safety and alarm discounts it barely moved until I doubled the amounts.

(In a perfect world filled with extra cash and no tuition costs, I'd be driving a black Passat W8. But this isn't a perfect world, is it?)
It gets easier when you get out of college and have a steady paycheck. What seems like a moderate insurance cost to me would have freaked me out in college. Don't do what I did and give yourself an upset stomach every time you see a car you want and can't have. I remember getting angry at one point. It isn't worth it. A few years of patience and Gran Turismo dreams will pay off in the end.

As a side note, my wife was concerned about the backseat and one day being able to get a child seat in it. :nervous: Well, I have a three foot tall stuffed Bullwinkle that I won at Cedar Point about 10 years ago and I always keep him strapped into the center of my backseat just for laughs. Well, when I put him in my car this weekend I was able to stand up slightly bent in the back floor board while putting him in. I imagine a child seat won't be too much more work and an actual child will only be a hassle if they are hyper, but no sized car will matter then. After doing that I decided to actually sit in my won backseat (I'm driving, why do I care?) and realized I had to slump way down before my knees hit the front seat. I'm 5'7", so average sized adults shouldn't have a problem.

Oh, and I got some better lit pictures as well as the guages and console lit up at night.

For a quick shot, here I am with my car:

Wish I would have kept up with this thread earlier, as im considering a golf/rabbit too.

About the alloys I think maybe you should look at BBS ones, which come fitted to the higher spec, sportier golfs, polos etc as they seem to be pretty cheap and good looking whilst being a respectable quality manufacturer. VW atleast over here charge a fair whack for their dealership alloys, but then again every manufacturer does.

Wouldnt go over 17's though as it will make the ride harsh and the car would be slightly slower. I am interested to see what the rabbit will look like with some different alloys.

Whats the performance figures on the 2.5? We dont get that motor over here so I dont know anything about it.

Congrats on the nice motor 👍

There actually are a set of VW tagged 17" BBSs available through the dealer. All the 17" wheels run roughly $1300-$1500, not including tires.

I'll just copy and paste from Edmunds to save myself some typing.
Base Number of Cylinders: 5
Base Engine Size: 2.5 liters
Base Engine Type: Inline 5
Horsepower: 150 hp
Max Horsepower: 5000 rpm
Torque: 170 ft-lbs.
Max Torque: 3750 rpm
Drive Type: FWD

It redlines at about 5800 rpm. I haven't pushed it into the peak horsepower yet as I am still breaking it in, but you feel the torque all the way through. Without trying I have caused the wheels to chirp on take off and I scared a friend this morning when I took him for a ride, and I have yet to try pushing it.

I haven't seen anything on the 0-60 yet. In fact I can't find any performace reviews. The best I can tell you is the first time I pulled it on the interstate I looked down to set my cruise control and realized I was doing 80mph without noticing.
