The Volkswagen Fan Club

Volkswagen officaly claims a 0-60 time around 9 seconds for the Rabbit, presumably with the Triptronic automatic. I wouldn't have guessed anything faster than 8 or so seconds with a manual transmission, but I can't be completely certain.

...Too bad we don't have the 1.4 TSI here in the US, as it sounds like a great engine. My understanding has been that it is too expensive and requires too high of an octane of gasoline to run correctly, and thats just too bad. I'm also hoping that we eventually have an optional 2.0T version of the Rabbit sans GTI trim, but I doubt that will happen either.

The good news is that the TDI Rabbit is supposed to be here for 2009, and with 140 BHP, that should make it a great leader in both fuel efficency and speed.

This was mine and I loved the car!!!!!!!

I would say just get the steelies and look into buying a nice used set of OEM wheels through a private buyer. Right now, I run the 15" BBS mesh wheels from the Corrado VR6 and just purchased these:

They are OEM painted wheels from a MKIII Jetta GLX and have very nice tires equipped. It was a steal to get all 4 for $200. This gives me a chance now to sandblast the Corrado wheels and put a nice set of rubber on them.

I know a MKIII is much older than a MKV but the lug patterns for all the newer GOLF/Rabbit and Jetta are 5 x 100 (unless they have changed). Im sure some nice 17's from a MKIV would look nice.

I know the wheels offered from VW for teh new Jetta and Rabbit are the same as the ones offered on the MKIV, so I figure they would fit.

I'm planning to go with what I have for a few months and then seeing what's out there. It would be mostly asthetic and I'm not the type of person to blow a wad of cash for that kind of thing. I've driven borderline clunkers for years and now I have a nice car that I barely notice the wheels on.

Oh, and for those curious about the mileage on the car; I filled up this morning and it was about 28.5 mpg. That was with me getting used to the new clutch and killing it or chirping the tires every now and then, as well as time sitting in the car just messing with stuff to kind of get used to the new positioning of everything. Just regular driving now that I am managing to get used to the feel of everything and whatnot should be somewhat higher.

.

Actually the MKV wheels are now 5x112 (passat/audi) MkIV was the last 5x100. Nothing that cant be fixed with adaptors...just learn how to figuire out propper offsets.

Getting 28.5 MPG is pretty respectable for the 2.5L, IMO. I've only been managing about 27 MPG with my Wolfsburg, nearly 33 MPG on highway trips, but a loss of only 2 MPG going to the larger and more powerful engine isn't cause for too much concern.

I'd suggest the rather conservative and "average" wheels out of the VW parts bin that are between 16" and 17" and are a bit on the cheap side.

The best overall wheel certainly would be the "Contour" 16X7 that retails for $283 (sans tire).

It is a pretty good looking, classic VW wheel that looks pretty good on any model. The price isn't half-bad, so selecting a good tire at a reasonable price would be the hardest part.

...But even then, the wheel covers don't look that bad now...

The catalogue they gave me listed the same sets under separate Golf (up to 2006) and Rabbit pages so I assumed they were the same. It may have been the same wheel pattern, but set up differently for each model. I just gave it a quick glance since they didn't have what I wanted in stock and were trying to get me to buy the set that would be $1,000 more than what I was looking at.

This is about what I was expecting. I have a long road trip in December, so it should be interesting to see what pure highway mileage comes out to be. I'm sure this will improve once I get past the "OMG I GOT A NEW CAR!!!!" phase. There's a running (non-monetary) bet in my family that I'll get a ticket before my new license plate comes in.

Do I get that now that I own a VW or do I have to actually subscribe?

EDIT: Are you talking about the VW Driver Gear Web site? Where are you finding the Rabbit "For my Volkswagen" stuff? The best I can find is stuff for a 2006 Golf.

That is the set I wanted, but they didn't have available. There are three other local dealers, so once I set the cash aside I am going to call around and see what I can get.

Which is why I didn't get talked into the 17" wheels. It was a purely asthetic issue because I like being able to see the 4-wheel disc brakes. I will give them credit, though, they matched the wheel covers to the steel so well that if you do look through the "holes" you see the brakes more than the black wheels.

If it had drum brakes on the back I wouldn't have considered wheels at all. I've seen some cars with drum brakes and thin-spoked wheels and it just looks kind of ugly to me.

Another thing: Does anyone know if VW sells headrest covers? My hair can get somewhat oily, especially on hot days, and every car I've owned I have left a matted spot on the headrest. I'd liek to try and get a headrest cover that either closely matches my current fabric or maybe with a VW or Rabbit logo. I know I can get them with collegiate logos, so I was just curious if anyone knew if I could get something VW related.
