This is shocking.

Except even bits if that are wrong or outdated.

Marg has been around for over 100 years - it was invented in 1869, and most Marg has substantially reduced or removed Trans-fats since the late '90s either because of a legal requirement (some European countries) or simply to keep people buying them.

Remove the trans-fat and may of the negatives of that email also go.

Scaff

Indeed. I haven't seen trans fats in any margarine. It appears as 'partially hydrogenated oil' in the ingredients list.

Go for take control, smart balance, etc. Essentially zero trans fat and reduces cholesterol. No brainer. But I'm not a butter snob. I'd bet butter people say that it doesn't taste the same.

The ironic thing is, that health conscious people probably do more damage to themselves through stress than if they continued to eat the thing that they avoid.
It's good to be sensible but let's face it, most stuff we eat nowadays is probably full of crap.

And even if it were, if we seriously knew everything about some of the food we eat everyday, we wouldn't eat at all.

Apart from the fact that people will eat it anyway, even if they knew what material the food actually contains.

I think it's safe to assume that it's true, like certain pre-prepared frozen meals, for example.

Blabla lie

The margarine was invented during the Napelon time to have a cheap butter for the soldiers and people.

So if the first paragraphe is already wrong there is a doubt on the rest.

And there are also different types of margarine with very different compositions.

What's shocking is misinformation flying around, coupled with goodie good doers telling you what you can or cannot consume. BTW wasn't trans fat once ment to replace the evil butter or something? It's like wine, pick your expert and it's either good for your heart or it decreases your life expectency. Moderation and personal responsability are usually key.

I eat with butter and cook with olive oil, I dislike any other forms.....

The more natural the food, the better (Margarine and other low-fat spreads are engineered, whereas real butter is simply churned milk). Still, everything in moderation!

Margarine isn't technically sold in the UK anymore. Everything on our shelves now is either a spread or butter.

That email is hilarious though, it's clearly completely made up and it just screams 'fake' from the very start.

As an American, as I said, if it tastes good/looks good we eat it. Most of us don't care what it is.

Correction - if it tastes good, looks acceptable and hasn't been confirmed to kill people*, we'll eat it.

*We'll make an exception for Parmos. :P

I will eat anything that tastes good. Even McNuggets.

Regarding butter, what would be a good "daily dose" of it? Like, I often eat two butter slices of toast some days.

That is soooo true.

Cant stand butter or margerine, i find them both repulsive. i agree margerine is a load of crap, everyone knows that, but i dont see how butter is that nice either.

It is indeed shocking someone would actually read, let alone seriously consider, an e-mail their aunt showed them. Virtually all things like this are, as shown, ancient internet relics that old people refuse to let die because they forward everything they get. Why? Because they often believe what they see on the internet (oh dear) and want to share it.

Why not?

How does enough not to become obese sound? Butter from grass-fed cows would be the best. Two slices of toast with butter is nothing to worry about.

That kind of depends on what type/brand you use. Some contain more fat, others might have healthier oils added. Either way, moderate amounts eaten each day is alright.

I think he's surprised that his aunt even sent him that. Did I win?

His aunt.

What's shocking is that you decided to post this on GTPlanet. And also that you've managed to spell the name of your own home town wrong.

Based on what's in my refrigerator, two buttered pieces of toast is 210 total calories, and only 50 calories are from the butter.

Margarine is gross. The texture and the taste are totally different. Butter isn't bad for you either. Not unless you're eating a stick of it with your morning coffee for breakfast.

I wonder how the hydrogenation process has changed to abate the formation of trans fatty acids if some of those brands indeed don't contain any.

I'm sure there's some FDA loophole much like the sugar packet companies exploit in order to label their products zero-calorie sweeteners.
