Thoughts on missing "on the box" features?

I am still waiting for the promised Drag Racing mode... from GT2!

Thus I am not surprised that GT5 is missing things. I just hope they continue to patch the problems and fix stuff that is clearly missing or broken. Right now I'm just happy we can finally PLAY the game instead of waiting for another release date to slip.

You know what I don't understand, how can one register for a website for a game(or anything else, for that matter), be an active, contributing member and not consider yourself a fanboy??

That is something that has always blown my mind.

Why? Because they aren't Gran Turismo?

No

Because I played alot them and they're nothing compared to GT5

Hot Pursuit has terrible, sluggish controls, repetitive gameplay, and some time trials that make you feel cheated among other problems

GT5 has such low scores because the reviewers fell into the hype trap and Forza 3 Fear , uncertainty and doubt campaign against GT5 . Funny how most reviewers dont even mention the physics

Despite its flaws its not a B game

That is something that has always blown my mind.

From Wikipedia:

"Fanboy is a term used to describe a male who is highly devoted and biased in opinion towards a single subject or hobby within a given field."

I suppose said person could be:

a) Female
b) Without bias of opinion

and still be signed up.

Hot Pursuit has terrible, sluggish controls,
I played it. Seemed fine to me.
On the other foot, GT5 has known problems with throttle/brake inputs when using a controller.

repetitive gameplay,
Look up "grind" in this subforum. I'll wait.

and some time trials that make you feel cheated among other problems
Look up "Samba Bus."

Yeah. Its all a conspiracy, I tells yah!

Funny how most reviewers dont even mention the physics
The physics! Oh boy, the physics. I mean, they are pretty good, so obviously there is nothing worth mentioning otherwise.

Despite its flaws its not a B game
What would you give it? The game is missing major advertised features and functionality. The interface is terrible. The multiplayer is bare bones. The single player is very brief and absolutely loaded with poor design decisions. It is poorly optimized as all hell, and it has several bugs of various levels that need to be worked out. B seems perfectly acceptable to me, if not a little charitable.

I think PD have figured out the secret of success with sequels. If you have an unfinished and buggy game, just make everyone wait for aaaaages till you release it, then they will just be grateful to have the game whatever state it's in :P Release the game after a short dev time with the same issues and watch it get slammed...

Being allowed to put embargoes on reviews to not come out early also helps...

Define unfinished. They could have continued to add features. Those features would have taken longer.

Quality (and/or Features), Time, Cost. It's the development triangle. Pull on one thing and the other loses out.

Who said there were embargoes?

While it certainly won't keep me from playing... How about this? Would be a nice to have for sure:

(from the manual)

Either A. the cases and manuals were made before the discs were authored or B. It wasn't ready, they knew it and went forward with it anyhow.

I am a programmer and a manager and I often refer to this as "over-promise and under-deliver" Too much pride and not enough will to get the job done... In the end, it ALWAYS bites you in the ass, just like this.

Hope they get their crap in gear.

One feature of questionable value. Hardly a major over promise. Any more?

Pretty nuts! I guess they thought they would get the patch out in time but didn't, it's not right but sadly it's happening a lot just lately :( patches are the easy way out it seems.

The thread title is:
Thoughts on missing "on the box" features?

Where did I say it was a 'major over promise'? I said: (since you apparently didn't read it the first time around)

While it certainly won't keep me from playing... How about this? Would be a nice to have for sure

I love the game. Why do you seem so blindly defensive? They wrote that in the manual and didn't put it in the game... End of story.

Really? I felt this was one of the biggest features I would have liked... especially custom kart tracks... go karts are one of the few cars you can just open a room for and know everyone has equally powered ones. But the built in tracks are pretty lame and the road courses are almost always too bumpy and long to really be fun... on top of that they tend to have a lot of long straights that bring the karts ridiculous drafting power to the fore front.

I am not impressed with the course maker but the only place I could see it being of real value is hosting a custom room with custom courses for a change of pace... and you can't.

Oh and as for other features missing, matchmaking and online events... both also listed in the manual and missing. And apparently I am supposed to be able to match my Bspec guy up with other Bspec guys online? I don't see how to do that...

The problem is that if you look at GT5 online it's obviously really bad... a lot of stuff that's there in other online games isn't there and what IS there is done questionably badly (as has been described many times about the time waster that is the current online lobby system).

@JetJaguar2000, I feel your pain, like many of us that like the things come in the same way they are advertised.
This game have many things that was advertised but not are in game at this moment, let's hope they come. I wait a little more before starting to fall in my table of preferencies.
This for me is misleading consumers/fans. With some metaphors, nowadays must players want food for the eyes and not taste the food as it should be. Many people eat this things very easly.
The game makers increasingly offer of "fast-food". And will be always people happy with that, and others don't.
The game come out a very few days, let's wait some polish and progress very soon.

Move along, nothing to see here.
I'm surprised by PD on this.
I'm not even the slightest bit surprised by Sony on this.
Since when did Sony ever care even a little about honesty or their customers?
Maybe during the root kit fiasco? For those that are uninformed, Sony decided to put a little program on all their media (movie DVDs and Music CDs) that when you put it in your computer to play it, it installed a little program giving Sony full access to your hard drive to do a search of your files (but it was capable of much more) and determine if you were violating any anti-piracy laws. The thing is, it was your private computer, and Sony had no probably reason to search your private files.. Oh, wait a sec, I forgot.. Sony isn't the police. They don't get to search your private stuff even if they had probable cause. I guess someone forgot to tell Sony that.

Or in their backing of DRM? I'm not even going into that one...

Considering there is no alternative, you better get used to it.

My standard edition GT5 EU doesn't have the words "leaderboard" or "matchmaking" on it at all.

confused lol

It does have it on the US standard case up the top beside the playstation network logo.

I think it valid to complain when stuff on the box is not lived up to, but on the other hand i think it is valid to say that PD and sony have been working hard to patch the game up, 3 patches in what 10 12 days?

To say the kas/sony or PD in general do not care or are unfocused or are not going to fix/add things because all they do is release half finished products is just plain trolling. If they did not care we would not have 3 updates addressing issues, they clearly have a to do list and are going for the major bugs and tackling them one or two at a time them releasing patches.

And lets not mention NFS HP if you like it great it is an arcade racer where throttle control is certainly not a huge deal.

If you want to go play forza or NFS or whatever go play it, if things drag on for months and gt5 is not everything that was advertised even us die hard GT fans will be yelling just as loud. But the games not even been out but what is it 2 weeks now?

i have the box infront of me and there isn't a gray banner, the top of the back of my box says "Take it to the Track"

Interesting... on mine at the top in the gray area it says stuff like "matchmaking, send friend/invite in game, leaderboards" amongst other things (I can't recall as I don't ahve the box with me...

I think it valid to complain when stuff on the box is not lived up to, but on the other hand i think it is valid to say that PD and sony have been working hard to patch the game up, 3 patches in what 10 12 days?

Boththings are valid to say and true, but rushing out patches after the game is sold (which haven't yet completely resolved the missing issues even and we can't be positive they will all be resolved) does not excuse the fact it came out and was sold that way... it only means they didn't continue doing things wrong.

To say the kas/sony or PD in general do not care or are unfocused or are not going to fix/add things because all they do is release half finished products is just plain trolling.

To say it as fact may be trolling as I don't think anyone amongst us really knows for sure, but equally so you can't write it off as being impossible either.

If they did not care we would not have 3 updates addressing issues, they clearly have a to do list and are going for the major bugs and tackling them one or two at a time them releasing patches.

Actually I woudl say if they care, we shouldn't NEED 3 updates addressing issues.

If you want to go play forza or NFS or whatever go play it, if things drag on for months and gt5 is not everything that was advertised even us die hard GT fans will be yelling just as loud. But the games not even been out but what is it 2 weeks now?

What if I want to play GT5 the way it was advertised on the box? What then? Playing Forz and NFS don't solve that issue... and they shouldn't have to.

As for how long we give them to release patches, explain to me again why that's reasonable? I don't think I have ever heard of such a graciousness being extended to other games (especially around here).

Why work harder than you have to or strive for anything better than mediocre when human beings like this will praise and defend you for spinning lies to them and point blank ripping them off.

I think missing components that were promised on the packaging clearly defines unfinished :dunce:

I know if I had purchased a bugatti veyron, and sat on a waiting list for years ( like everybody has to) when purchasing it was told that it would be powered by a hand built w16 and be capable of doing over 400kph. And the day it arrived find out that it was powered by an old sr20 and topped out at 200 I would be somewhat *rightfully* disappointed. So why is designing box art for a game, and specifically naming features that you know for fact you havnt included in your game defendable?

You my friend, need to be put in a restraint jacket and locked in a padded room, your relationship with reality is somewhat comparable to the relationship a meat pie has with neptune.

Do we agree the game has problems: yes

Do we agree that it was not the best form to release the game before fixing them: yes

Do we agree that PD promised things that are just not in game:Yes

Do we know the true reason for these problems: NO!!

Are they trying to fix them : I say yes. I truly think something has gone on behind closed doors, and they are trying their best to fix the problems.

Do we agree that patching it is better then not patching it
:
Well most say Yes.
If you say no to this then the only option is to argue. because we don't have a time machine, we cant go back and make sure that there will be no miss information. There is no way to fix the problems now without a patch. Simple as that.

Do we need to hear the same problems over and over again:

Well not really I think that people are starting to get fed up with the constant GT5 complaint regurgitation. Good if you find something new that the people need to know about. But it seems that the same people just love to get on a soap box and preach to all about how horrible and mean PD have been to us poor gamers. Now this was fine at the start. But now, well how many times do you need to repeat the same things.

And matchmaking and leaderboards are ruining your life? I know it a pain the current multiplayer system is very flawed without the matchmaking thing. But multiplayer works, custom lobbies work, it just takes a little extra effort to make online work at the moment.

The other stuff listed on there works.

It is a rare game that comes out now days that does not need fixing. And lets face it kaz was pushed by sony to add stuff like 3d, he was pushed by fans to add damage, hell they were finding problems with the game last month just before it was going to be pressed. Me wonders how much of this stuff would have been avoided if sony did not foist 3d to be shoved into the game at the 13th hour. And i bet if you got kaz to speak his mind he would have not released the game for another 6 months to a year. Course that is a whole debate in itself right there.

I am glad we got a game to play after all these years of waiting. Is it a perfect game? No. Would i have liked kaz to take his slow methodical pace and work on the game till it was 100% done and bug free? Not it it was going to delay the game another 2 years. I mean all the issues with the game can be fixed period, there is nothing totally game breaking and nothing that makes the game utterly unplayable.

Far as the incremental updates go i like it they fix 2 or 3 issues they get a patch out. 1.3 patch fixed shadows to a degree, fixed mp damage to a degree, and added some ai fixes for b spec and pit in commands in b spec. If they keep patching at this rate i will be happy as they fix more stuff that was not finished properly. I like this pace better than sitting on fixes till they get a mega patch weeks later.

How long should we be patient? two months? i give a two month window for all or most of the issues to be fixed, In the meantime there is plenty of cars to be earned and xp/cr to be ground, and online minus the leaderboards and whatnot that should keep lest me busy for the next few months wo overly worrying about a few things that were held back or bugged.
