Not sure what to say about this, only that the original game was the killer app for me which made me get a Playstation and play video games again after a long hiatus (I know it was on other platforms too). I lived and breathed the original saga even if it went off the boil somewhat, and even enjoyed some of the PS2 offerings. The reboot I started but I have on ice, missing too many of the old elements I loved eg. exploration (way too linear), solitude and, well, tomby stuff. So anyway: http://kotaku.com/the-next-tomb-raider-is-an-xbox-exclusive-1620022328

Seems like a timed exclusive if you read the continued replies to that very question.

Tomb Raider reboot was very good on the gameplay side, much better than Uncharted but not up to Uncharted's cut scenes, motion capture and story.

I bought it on PC a while after launch. I tend to wait anyways, you get all the patches and bugs sorted plus some DLC sometimes for a cheaper price.

I hope Lara retains the bow and arrow for the next outing, first was such a great playing game.

It is coming to Xbox 360 so not to bad after all and if it is only timed exclusive which it sounds like it is, even better if any bugs are found and fixed by then when released on the other platforms.

Truly surprises me. Its rare to see exclusives anymore and for a game that was exclusive to no longer be exclusive is strange indeed. I wonder if MS paid them a HUGE chunk of money for the exclusive rights? I do know MS is trying everything they can to boost sales . So it would not surprise me at all if MS paid a generous amount for Tomb raider to be exclusive.

It will be interesting to see how long they bought the rights for, hopefully by 2016 it is out on other platforms. I wonder if they will still have PS4 running close to 60FPS while Xbox One close to 30FPS or if Microsoft might try and force platform parity.

Huh, interesting post. I had no idea how each console was selling (getting one doesn't interest me at the moment) but your post got me curious and found this:

Warning: seems a little biased but still gives a good reference.

The unfortunate part (for them) is that while TR is a well-loved IP, it's not nearly as powerful to really sway sales in their direction that much.

I'll tell you what pisses me off, though. Not being able to purchase it on PC (as I would) because of the console war.

This is usually a very fairly reliable source for tracking game console sales. http://www.vgchartz.com/ The PS4 is selling almost twice as many consoles as the X1. MS already announced they are trying everything they can to increase their sales. I am pretty sure this Tomb raider exclusive is part of that. Which is unfortunate for other gamers IMO that do not have the X1.

I am a multi-console gamer but I kept an eye on both consoles. Then waited a year and bought the X1 last week because the console has everything I want for online gaming. The Master Chief Collection helped seal the deal for me and the majority of my friends.

3rd party games are VERY RARELY exclusive these days, it will be a timed exclusive and will likely come to PS4 as the complete edition a year or so later. Remember GTA being PS2 exclusive? people said it would never come to Xbox but it eventually did years later as a collection.

I'm scratching my head though as I'm trying to figure out how this is going to move more XB1s, especially considering that this is a timed exclusive. Sure, TR is rather big and recognized franchise but it's hardly a system seller. It will certainly move some hardware but I doubt that it'll help MS in the long run (if the sales trend continues in favor of the PS4).

No offense but I wouldn't describe vgchartz as "very reliable". :P

Though I do agree that it provides a fair frame of reference regarding video game sales and I do check it from time to time.

I changed it to "fairly" reliable. They do seem to have a several day delay in the numbers. It doesn't update instantly. Other than checking those console numbers a couple times a year, I never visit that site. ;)

MS has confirmed its timed by saying its got a duration. Only time will tell how long. I'm guessing a year or maybe 6 months.

Some people may not be aware that the first reboot cost a 100 million to make. When you take the early sales, remove the Sony/MS royalties, packaging etc, factor in the other half of the sales that were much cheaper then it pretty much comes to what Square Enix were complaining about. Initial sales of 3-4 million weren't enough, only now have they turned a profit and not a big one. It's not been a good venture despite 6 million sales. the game went very cheap after only a few months.

Uncharted 2 cost half that to make so you can see the problem there.

Way I see it is Square Enix made a mistake with the first project, hoping it would shift 5 million units at full price. When Microsoft come with possibly $50 million or whatever for the sequel, it would come as a relief for SE and the devs can make the next game with much of it already paid. MS get their holiday exclusive, and we all get to play a top game assuming its around 12 months timed.

C'mon man, we were playing it cool here!

Besides, sometimes when these time exclusives finish the new releases for the other platforms contain additional content and whatnot. This might end up being a good thing for PS4 / PC players.

SE's expectations were absolutely ridiculous to begin with. Clearly they never budgeted accordingly and then went on blaming ''selective customers'' for not meeting their targets. Funny people.

Square Enix expected 14.9 million retail game sales from North America and Europe combined in its six-monthly forecast last September. Considering the fact that Tomb Raider, Hitman Absolution and Sleeping Dogs were the only big releases for these regions and accounted for a combined 8.75 million sales worldwide, it's clear that their targets were a good deal higher.

I was going to buy the first Tomb Raider for the PS4, but after seeing this garbage, nope. I will not support a developer who will give us the run around like this, legally bound or not.

As it's been confirmed as a timed exclusive only, can the title of the thread be changed to reflect that please...

I was relieved to hear the exclusivity was timed...

But I wonder when it will release for other platforms.

Seeing as how its Xbox release date is Holiday 2015, it's a no-brainer PlayStation and PC will see it in early/mid-2016.

Same thing happened with Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (was a timed Xbox exclusive but coming to PS3/4 next week) and I'm glad it's happening for this as well.

It will be release on PS4 like one month later after XBox One. So there is no drama.

If that's actually going to happen, then it's another reason to not buy an XBone.

Yeah, I highly doubt that Microsoft delivered a truckload of cash to SE/Crystal Dynamics for just one month of exclusivity.

I'm inclined to agree with USSR on this one. As MS haven't said how long and Square Ennix/Crystal Dynamics aren't allowed to say, it implies that the exculivity will possibly be just for the Christmas period.
