Ok was just in a convo with Mr P and Venom 77 and we was waffling on disussing the top 10 actors of all time ...here's what we came up with , if you can think of anything better than what we came up with, then say so and why :mischievous:

In no order (that's asking too much)

Al Pacino( Ron says #1 no question )
Clint Eastwood
Robert DeNiro
Tom Hanks ( Venom's choice )
Jack Nicholson
Leonardo decaprio ( my pick :D)
Michael Douglas
Gary Oldman
Denzel Washington
Gene Hackman

I've been told to put down Rons top 3 out of the above 10 that we agreed on, in order...

Pacino
Nicholson
DeNiro

what do you think ?

:P

How about:

Sean Connery

nah Harrison ford was good in the Fugitive , that's about it :P

Unfortunately, four out of your top five can't act at all. They always play the same character, just in different clothes. Every movie.

10 Greatest LIVING Actors
(in no order)

Robert Duvall
Sean Connery
Harrison Ford
Sean Penn
Ed Harris
Sir Anthony Hopkins
Gene Hackman
Willem Dafoe
Melly Mel Gibson
Robin Williams

Hey Duke.

Anthony Hopkins, how could I foget. :banghead:

I always think of him when I'm cooking with Fava Beans and a nice Ciante. YUMMY! ;)

William Dafoe, interesting choice there Duke. Can you give me a few of the movies he's been in, I can only seem to remember Platoon at the moment.

Sean Penn, interesting pick. So is Robin Williams, always thought of him as a goof ball. Although he was good in "Dead Poets Society." And what was that last film that he did? The one about him being a serial killer or something to that effect. Any good?

If I had to make a list it would be:

(In no particular order)

Robert Deniro
Johnny Depp (Whom I'm sure nobody here will agree with.)
Tom Hanks
Patrick Stewart (Only because I've seen him do Shakespeare in Central Park.)
Marlon Brando (who basically influenced the last 2 generations of actors.)
Gene Hackman
Kevin Spacey
Morgan Freeman
Sidney Poitier
And a Wild Card Entry.... Scott Bakula (How this guy was passed over in his career I'll never understand...)

Willem Dafoe was in Spider-Man (awful) and Flight of the Intruder. Those are the only two I can think of at the moment, but an IMDB search gives up:
Clearing, The (2003)
Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003)
Finding Nemo (2003) (voice)
Auto Focus (2002)
Spider-Man (2002)
Spider-Man: The Movie Game (2002) (voice)
Reckoning, The (2001)
Edges of the Lord (2001)
Pavilion of Women (2001)
Bullfighter (2000)
Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
Animal Factory (2000)
American Psycho (2000)
Boondock Saints, The (1999)
eXistenZ (1999)
New Rose Hotel (1998)
Lulu on the Bridge (1998)
Affliction (1997)
Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)
English Patient, The (1996)
Basquiat (1996)
Victory (1995)
Night and the Moment, The (1994)
Tom & Viv (1994)
Clear and Present Danger (1994)
In weiter Ferne, so nah! (1993)
Body of Evidence (1993)
Light Sleeper (1992)
White Sands (1992)
Flight of the Intruder (1991)

Last Temptation of Christ, The (1988)
Off Limits (1988)
Platoon (1986)
To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)
Roadhouse 66 (1984)
Streets of Fire (1984)
New York Nights (1984)
Hunger, The (1983)
Loveless, The (1982)
Heaven's Gate (1980) (uncredited)

For me (in no order)
DeNiro
Pacino
Spacey
Hopkins
Hanks
Oldman
Harris

... all mentioned previously, and:

Dustin Hoffman.

I would be controversial (especially living in Scotland) and say that Connery can't act either. He never overcame his Scottishness, which was at its most ridiculous in Hunt for Red October. Also, I think that on-form (Good Morning Vietnam, Good Will Hunting, Awakenings) Robin Williams is fantastic, and a definite list-maker, but off-form Robin Williams is awful. I think I may be the only person that saw Mrs Doubtfire for the appalling trash that it is.

Also, Gibson can't act either - he's as one-dimensional as it gets. And he does have something of a habit of manipulating historical events for his own means.

I'm really sorry lotus350, but I'm going to have to add to the weight of outrage and disbelief at your selection of di Caprio. He's just pretty boy fluff who was bludgeoned into a good performance in Titanic by his director and co-star, and who was scarcely credible in Gangs of New York.

Just my £0.02, of course!

All have been mentioned in the above, but I suspect that in a few moments edit: I (was: we) will have to include Eminem on the list.

*Dives for cover under the table*

My personal top ten ( in random order ):

Tom Hanks
Robert deNiro
Al Pacino
Harrison Ford
Robin Williams
Mel Gibson
Jeroen Krabbé
Jack Nicholson
Anthony Hopkins
Kevin Spacey.

Yep, definitely one I missed. As well as some others have reminded me of:

Morgan Freeman
Samuel L. Jackson

I would have included Sidney Poitier as well but I was not sure if he was alive.

Agreed, sort of. But he always gives it the old school try. Plus, he has great presence on camera, which is only getting better with age.
Mrs. Doubtfire was a horrific torture I hope to never undergo again. Even though he made his name as a comedian, I much prefer him in his more serious roles, such as Dead Poets and some of his later work.
Also, Gibson can't act either - he's as one-dimensional as it gets. And he does have something of a habit of manipulating historical events for his own means.
Agreed, but again, he's so good at it. He may have a limited range, but he throws himself into every performance of that role. DeNiro has that same limited range and even more intensity, obviously. I only deduct points from DeNiro because most people think he's a god among actors, when he's not. Maybe it's just that Melly Mel delivers more than I expect, while DeNiro delivers less. I also have nothing at all against heroism, which probably makes me more tolerant of Mel's self-designed roles. The only thing I really liked DeNiro in was Brazil.

Nicholson, on the other hand, has walked through every performance I've ever seen him in. I know I'm in the minority with that opinion, though.

well I'll have to put mine in here now wont I?

In no particular order:
Robert De Niro (my fave actor)
Al Pacino
Denzel Washington
Morgan Freeman
Samuel L Jackson
Jack Nicholson (watch One flew over the Cuckoo's nest)
Anthony Hopkins
Robin Williams (youve gotta watch 1 hour photo)
And since i watch a lot of action movies:
Bruce Willis
Mel Gibson
Arnold Swarzenegger (can anyone spell that name?)

those are my picks

Kelly: de Caprio?!? i think you're a bit more than Re-drunk :D

Given Lotus' rules above that they have to be alive, mmm, of the current crop (in no particular order):

- Russell Crowe: Won the Oscar for Gladiator, but should have won it for both The Insider and A Beautiful Mind
- Johnny Depp: Not widely seen, probably because of his choice of movies, but he's pretty steady. Donnie Brasco, Blow and one of my all time favourites, Dead Man
- Gary Oldman: I'll forgive him The Fifth Element (at least he looked like he was enjoying himself), although he's been a little quiet lately
- Jack Nicholson: He was pretty quiet for a while (in terms of quality performances), but has had a couple of good ones of late - The Pledge, About Schmidt
- Geoffrey Rush - very selective in his roles and does a lot of stage in Australia, so apart from Shine you guys in the US probably won't have seen much of him. Very good in The Tailor of Panama, and turns up pretty regularly in local films, like Lantana
- Sir Ian McKellen: Who else could release a version of Shakespeare's Richard III, with Annette Bening and Robert Downey Jnr, and appear in two of the biggest films of 2003, The Two Towers and X-Men 2
- Chow Yun-Fat: Best known in the west for 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but did a lot of work in Hong Kong and won a lot of awards over there - did some killer action flicks. Trivia - turned down the role of Morpheus in The Matrix
- Robert De Niro/Al Pacino: I've grouped these guys together because I think their careers seem strangely parallel. Came to prominence about the same time, seem to play pretty similar roles in their movies (in how many movies has Pacino appeared as an LA cop?), and haven't been best of late. Pacino's basically been playing the same role since the mid 80's (although he does do it well) and De Niro has slept through more roles of late than I've had hot dinners (from the brilliance of 'Goodfellas' to the coma of 'Men of Honour')
- Brad Pitt: well, even though he's 40 this year, still the pick of the 'young' generation of actors - Snatch and Fight Club come to mind. Not too much of late though.
- Kevin Spacey: Probably my pick to play me in my middle aged years. Been very consistent in his acting, in quite different roles - Se7en, The Usual Suspects, LA Confidential, The Shipping News, American Beauty. Close to the best operator out there at the moment.

My choice of top 3 was for these movies

Pacino - carlito's way , scarface and scent of a woman

Nicholson - one flew over the cukoos nest , the shining and the crossing guard

Deniro - taxi driver , goodfellas , casino , analyze this and that etc ....

A lot of greats out there but these guys manage to convince me more than others

A close to perfect role outside my top 3 is ..

Michael Douglas in the Game (awesome movie :) )

Ahh scent of a woman great movie ..Hooo haaa ...:P
Pacino is definatly one of my faves

Seans gotta be in there he's one cool guy met him too :P (down in spain)
Robin williams allthough he's done some crap movies (well dos'nt everyone.?) but he's one funny guy  i love his standup stuff ..Superb..
Was this thread inspired by the top 100 greatest actors of all time shown on CH4 a wee while back..?
I never got a chance to see it but what was the final results..?

Just some of my favorites, In no particular order:

Robert Dinero
Dustin Hoffman
Al Pacino
