Something some of you should read this, as the news is leaving out some key notes. From a local Toyota mechanic here in town.
actually your wrong... only the cars with the CTS-toyota pedal are not allowed to be sold... any car equiped with a DENSO pedal is fully legal to sell to the public as the denso pedal cars are not the ones under the recal..so will sales slow down yes... but they are not gonna stop the fix should be out with in the next few months.. if anyone is driving an effected year model you can take it to the dealership and have it "checked" with a scan tool to see if its got any current issues... and at that time we can also tell you which pedal is in your car ..... toyota will be sending out recall letters as soon as the pedals become avaliable.....

also if you have one of these cars and the pedal does stick dont panic put the car in neutral and hit the brakes... let the motor hit the limiter and once your stopped just turn the car off.... also on cars equipped with a "smart key" ie push button... since its not a key and by just pushing the button while moving isnt gonna turn off the car... if you hold the power button on the dash for 5+ seconds it will shut off...

again these cases are rare... but its still an issue... i have driven A 🤬 LOAD of these cars with no problems... and the comments about the customer service... we got all info LAST MINUTE we didnt even know there was an "issue" untill we get a notification from toyota.. so its not the dealers faults on any of this we dont any parts to fix anything yet till toyota ships them out.. ... also along with a pedal replacement there should be an ECM reflash coming down the pipe line also that will cut fuel/rev limiter if it sees a pegged throttle and brake application... so if you slam the brakes its not gonna rev up like it would normaly

The problem is that when consumers hear "recall" they avoid anything related to that product like it has the bubonic plague. Take the Peanut Butter recalls last year, it only affected 1 small brand, yet peanut butter sales overall went way down even though they were completely safe.

Or how about the Ford Explorer? Technically wasn't Ford's fault (bad batch of tires from Firestone) but that incident singlehandedly ruined that vehicle's reputation.

Since Toyota was using CTS as an outside vendor to produce this component for them, it points to the concept that doing more things "in-house" is usually better. It also makes me wonder what other manufacturers CTS is supplying similar components to :nervous:

I just saw the CNN headline refering to Toyota recalling 5.3 millon vehicles. I imagined all these cars coming back in to Toyota dealerships to have the techs examine and/or fix (replace) affected components. The dealer's cost to do this is typically covered under normal warranty terms whereby the dealership is reimbursed by the manufacturer at their standard labor rate. Depending on the region, most large city dealerships get a conservative figure of about $85 per hour. Assuming that the fix could be handled in a minimum of 1 hour (minimum usually applied for), the cost to Toyota would be in excess of $450 million ..... no wonder they dropped out of F1 :)

So does that mean we'll get to see the Toyota F1 Pit Crew at your local Toyota Dealership working on the recalled cars very soon? :dopey:

Starting today, GM is offering incentives to Toyota owners if they switch to a GM vehicle.

............................

The recall spread to Europe and China:

Ford and GM are pouncing on this, offering incentives to Toyota owners.

Am I invisible?

The Hyundai dealership I work at had a sign out front that said "All Hyundai models are for sale" An obvious dig at Toyota down the street.

Now they're offering an extra $1000 trade in value on all Toyotas.

It seems like everyone is trying to capitalize on this thing... I wonder what this will do to Toyota in the long run, just as they're trying to turn sales around from the recession.

But I really want to see an ad in the Superbowl (assuming there will be some sort of trouble at the time) that plays on this. But yeah, Toyota really has a PR nightmare on their hands.

It may be a little late to make a Superbowl commercial out of it. Normally those are finalized months in advance.

You people kept asking for more exciting Toyotas, so I made a few recommendations a few years ago.

It looks like they mis-read the e-mail a little.

Seriously, I can only imagine the back-log of complaints...but this doesn't mean that 3.8 million people have the complaint or even the problem with the car. Probably just a few hundred unresolved complaints, and they will probably get their recall parts/fix first.

In the next few weeks I'll be going to the Chicago Auto Show and the Daytona 500, should be interesting to see what Toyota does at both those places.

I heard stories of anti-Toyota protests at the Detroit show. Don't know if that actually happened.

"A few hundred unresolved complaints" .... there has been 2000 documented accidents so far, not to mention 16 deaths ! No small matter :nervous:

Well the NASCAR race is at Daytona which goes full throttle the full race, maybe they will "recycle" the malfunctioning pedals and put them in the NASCAR car.

It's the green thing to do.

i think this recall was spurred by the death of an off duty Cop who died along with 3 family members. He drove a Lexus ES350 - and yes, the gas pedal got stuck... There's an audio of the 911 call and you actually hear the crash and the passengers screaming.

Here it is actually: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHGSWs4uJzY

What bugs me is that Toyota's afraid that someone'd sue over a floormat.
Some one may have already mentioned this, but someone successfully sued McDonald's cause the hot coffee they ordered was hot.

Really? Crap. Toyota may have a Pinto-level problem on their hands if they don't handle this correctly.

Ii it is simply a floormat problem then the fix is simple.
Did the design of either the floor mat, or the gas pedal change in the '07 Camry?
I have a '99, and have never had the floor mat engage the throttle in such a manner that the car could not be controlled.
Actually, the floor mat has NEVER engaged the throttle in any way, and my car does not have the anchor sticking up on the floor to engage grommet in the floor mat, to hold it in one place.

Wouldn't it only be irony if they were also recalled for stuck accelerators?

That would be like saying "At least I didn't get a bat in the face!" and instead getting your hand stapled. You still end up hurt, but it's in a completely different way then you exclaimed.

OK, I'll reword it for you, and for anyone else who has had a sense of humour bypass this evening.

"Isn't it funny that the Honda dealer was gloating about the supposedly superior reliability of their cars just a day or so before a massive recall of Hondas?"

Better?
